Hidden Gem...
After the monsoon rain the Starr Pass course was green, lush and well groomed.
The greens were surprisingly moist which took some getting used to. Several of my putts ended up short because of the drag introduced with the moisture of the greens.
Even soft chips stopped dead on these moist greens. This effect is somewhat different than many greens in the desert climate of Tucson where dry greens promote no drag on putts.
I teed off at 4pm and finished the Championship 18 course at 6:30pm. The round started off at near 100° under brigh sun. It finished with the sun low in the sky and the temperature a tolerable 95° with a setting sun.
There was no one ahead or behind me so there was no such a thing as slow play.
Previously, a friend had measured 8,000 steps doing this 18 hole course.
It was a satisfying round even though I lost one ball in the setting sun which shone directly into my face on the tee box.
Next time I'll look to take advantage of a money saving "hot deal" for a late afternoon start time.
The views of the Tucson valley are beyond compare. I even ran into 3 mule deer on one of the last holes.
This is a real "hidden gem" in my mind.
Enjoy!
Course was in excellent shape. Views amazing. Sonoran Desert features (mountains hills vegetation) truly appreciated
Challenging course for the average golf joe
Great track, love the lay out. Challenging but engaging. Great views of the valley. I will be back again.
Fun Course to Play
Played Starr Pass on a hot afternoon and had a great time. The course was in great condition from fairway to green. Some tee boxes were torn up, probably from heavy play and some on a slant, but not enough to create major problems. The greens ran true and were in good shape. The fairways and roughs were also in great shape. There were lots of forced carries off the tee box and we played the silver tees.
For the $36 green fee it was an outstanding value and one I look forward to playing again.
Beautiful Course
This course is a must play if your ever in the Tucson area. Every hole was very scenic. The course was in tip top shape.
Fine course!
Excellent course conditions had a nice day on this course!
Nerones
Great course Layout, super friendly staff y love this place.
Beautiful and tuff track in the foothills
All I can say make sure you play the right tees to really enjoy this awesome golf course. Our threesome had it all t ourselves.
Best “partender” in Arizona
Great course in super conditions!! Fun challenging tees and shot selection. Had a little trouble with the group in front of me and finding a few tee boxes but Abby ( I think) the partender on the course was amazing!! Deserved a perfect 10! Friendly and outgoing. Best beverage service I have had seance I have been here. Ed also deserves Kudos as a starter for helping get everyone started with a smile and some energy!! Will definitely come back next time I’m in town
Fabulous
Gorgeous views , Excellent condition, fun and challenging. Reminds me of why I love golf
Beware Sunday Afternoon
Head Pro was interviewed singing the praises of the course and facility on 1290 AM 08/13/22. I have played Starr Pass on many occasions and will not let my experience yesterday change my overall high opinion of the course (Course in Truly Excellent Condition!). However,
1)Complimentary Range Balls are complementary only when there are actual range balls to warm up with. All of the stations were empty and the new Starter (Danny?) was aware and acted as is he wanted to be anywhere besides working that day.
2) Overall Staff were unresponsive (except for Cart Service which was as always excellent) Front Desk, Cart Staff (too busy flirting than working), and especially the starter as stated above were disengaged, uninterested in giving golfers the Starr Pass experience I had grown accustomed to. Would have been nice to have been told "Cart Path Only" rather than have my Cart shut down and have to reverse out on the second hole.and stay on the Cart Paths the rest of the round. Or Even being told I was up on 1st Tee as a Single instead of Starter saying "12:20 get going" while thinking I shouldn't be a single with a half dozen other golfers waiting around on the putting green. Eventually I matched up with the two-some behind me to slow down pace of play in front of single in front blocked by glacial foursome in front of him.
3) Driven into three times by group behind us, (once off of back of cart on side of fairway in plain view) but with no ranger/staff on course there was no one to request etiquette be observed. Never had that happen before at Starr Pass. Sunday Afternoon Rules I guess... Expect that at El Rio or Silverbell, but not here.
4) Loved Mac and Eddie (sorry to hear he retired) as the Starters (first-class, top notch), The new Starter "Danny?" should be not in your Rotation going forward. I love Starr Pass and will for now continue to devote over 50% of my rounds there, but if Sunday is pre-cursor to future service, then eventually I and other golfers will get the hint. Radio Interviews are great for drumming up business, but actual Service ensures repeat customers. Clear?
Walk in the Desert
I had a very positive experience at Starr Pass walking the Coyote 9. The staff were super friendly, the course was lush and those bent grass greens were fast and perfect. I played well which also made it fun. Great Value this time of year!
