Palm Course - McCormick Ranch Photo submitted by tainge on 03/29/2013
Ridiculous greens
I am a very good putter and I love fast greens. They have made these greens unfair for the average player.. The contour and speed of the greens. When you are above the hole is simply too much. Not fun
Review
The course condition was average. The pin positions were borderline unfair. Staff could do better. Starters are best part of staff.
You get what you pay for.
Let’s start with $161 all-in per person. Played 7:47 as a twosome. Outside staff was very friendly. Pace was really good we followed a threesome. Conditions started very good and deteriorated as the round progressed. The greenside bunkers had decent sand for an AZ course. The greens were mostly smooth (except where the jerks didn’t repair) and very fast. Probably 6 or 7 of the green complexes are of goofy-golf variety where the slope was just ridiculous - no way to get/keep the ball close. Any ball on left side of the #8 green goes into the water. As the round progresses there was a lot of pot holes, standing water and bare spots in the fairway and around the collar (#11). Overall I think there are better options for like price.
Beyond HORRIBLE
Where do I begin? Sand traps full of water, fairways with potholes, mud holes, standing water pretty much everywhere, not to mention the smell from the stagnant water in all of the holes was disgusting. Goose crap throughout, and bald spots on fairways and greens as well. Way overpriced. Not a $210 golf course. I wouldn’t even pay $50 for this pasture. Obviously no money is put back into the course so if I were the superintendent I would be extremely embarrassed. Anyone considering to play this course, save your money, you would be better off playing elsewhere. Never be back EVER, even if it’s free!

Duffer
Nice challenge! Still very enjoyable but not overwhelming!
fast greens
Course is in good shape. The greens are very fast and very tough.
Poorly designed greens
The course layout is nice, and overall, in decent condition, but…. several of the green complexes are outrageously designed, which soured my impression of the course. 3 or 4 greens on the front 9 have slopes exceeding 5 degrees for a large portion of the green and it makes them unplayable and silly. Uphill putts literally rolling backwards after a lag putt shouldn’t happen. Having extreme slope is fine if only on a ridge on the putting surface, but the entire green? No thanks. Perhaps it’s due to erosion, or perhaps it was defined this way and made sense when stimp meters were <7 in the 1960’s but not when they are running 9+. In any case, the greens should be redone.
McDonald’s of Golf Experiences in Scottsdale
This is set up for volume of players. You have to wait to use the practice tees. No water for towels. The beverage cart was out of beer TWICE. The golf attendants (except the starter) were transactional. Good/fair layout and course was in good shape. Greens were exceptionally fast. Three pin locations could not hold a golf ball. Overall seems like the management is inexperienced.
Overpriced
They are overpriced! The greens are so fast you could not putt them. If you’re going to have roller coaster greens and the pins cut on the down slopes you can’t make them super fast! One or the other, reminded me of a miniature golf course. The grounds crew might think that funny but as an average golfer it’s no fun! The overall condition is mediocre, the place could be really great if they would put some of the money back into the property . It’s very tired! It really could be a premier property if the owners cared enough to take care of it.
Greens and pin placement was ridiculously unfair.
Pin placements on every hole and overall greens playability were impossible. Every pin was on a slope. Overall condition of course was very average at best.
need some love
the tees greens and fairways were as good as i have seen in the phx area.
bunkers, cart paths, on course bathrooms, etc were atrocious. no detail off the main playing surface was too small or major to be completely ignored by the management. interesting philosophy regarding the presentation of your golf product. I would plat again because of the playing surface conditions; it is just a shame because with some TLC it could be a classic.
Course conditions and overbooking not a plus
The fairways were fair to good. Conditions immediately outside the green were poor; hard, ‘tooth’ like hard crab grass. Greens were good. Range location was disappointing, or the staff could have done a better job clearing up the range balls on course fairways. I hit a brand new ball on the left side (in) the fairway. It was in a small sea of Pinnacle range balls -good luck finding your ball. That said, I probably shouldn’t have played a ball that had the same uncommon color… which was WHITE. Anyhow, it was still a good weather day. We T’d off at 2, moving pretty quick and right on the heels of the group in front of us. But when it turned 6pm 4 hours later, and we were just walking off the 14th green, we had to call it a day, which felt like a waste. Lesson: do not overbook your course, put a marshal out there to encourage pace of play. Consider some other options is what I’d say until the course owner addresses some of these common issues I’ve read in other posts. Oh, final thing.. I had good interactions with a courteous staff, so surprised to see others posts who complained about rude staff- I didn’t see that.
Good but not great
I enjoy this course but it has plenty of room for improvement, especially with regard to the practice area. Only 12 practice bays and one small chipping area for two courses is not enough!
A particular criticism is that the small chipping area allows people to take buckets of practice balls and so was covered with balls making it impractical to practice.
The driving range is also much in need of repair/ improvement, especially when hitting off grass.
