Carlton Oaks has a long history of tournament golf. Curtis Strange won the 1974 NCAA Championships on the course before Perry Dye redesigned the layout and stretched it to 7,400 yards in the 1980s. The Carlton Oaks Lodge, Ascend Hotel Collection, offers 51 modernized, Asian-inspired rooms just steps from the clubhouse, its Oaks Bar & Grill and the outdoor pool and jacuzzi.Facts

Lots of dry spots on the fairway
this course was pretty dry and needs some TLC for sure. The greens were nice but the fairways were in bad shape. Also, it’s pretty expensive to play here. I was expecting more from this course but it did not impress me.

Greens Keeper Wanted
Staff was great but the course needs to be kept in better shape. Traps have no sand (cement dirt), fairways were dead, area's around the green were bare and tough to chip from. San Diego has been getting rain and good weather, so there's no reason the course should be this poor of condition. Also, the ball machine at the driving range ran out twice while we were waiting to play our round.

They overbooked
They overbooked the course we had a 12 o clock tee time took 20 min in line to check in then had a 30 min wait at the first tee with 15-30 people standing there waiting and there was no start everyone asking everyone what tee time they had people were arguing and complaining took 3 and a half hours hours to play the front 9 and did not finish ran out of day light and I had one the hot deals tee time and when I booked and paid up front it said cart including but when checking in they said no and still made us pay for carts I won’t be going back there again

Carlton Oaks
Terrible fairway conditions. Frost delay backed up play an hour and staff allowed a group of 6 to play, slowing play even further. Multiple carts died and abandoned on course.

Greens are still slow and bunkers are horrible, but I enjoy the course and playing here.

The fairways were in horrible shape but the greens were in good shape. Pace of play was horrible, it took almost 3hr to play the front 9. I was so upset with the pace of play I only played 9 holes

Love this challenging course!!!
Unfortunately the course is not in great condition.
So. It might not be for just anyone.
I still recommend this course due to the course design , I would love to have seen it in I It’s prime.

Great discount slow play
The price through Golf Now was great. Do not play after 1230 pm we started at 1255 on Sunday. Only finished 14 holes in 4 hours it was too dark to play. Two groups in front of us quit because of group ahead of them and we still couldn’t finish.

This course needs work.
This can be a very challenging course regardless of course conditions. However, this course is in poor condition. The only lush parts of the course are the tee boxes. The best way to describe the fairways is "mown dry prairie". The bunkers and traps are very firm, like clay with a 1/4 inch of sand (or less) on top.

Poor conditions.
This course just keeps getting worse. The price is too high for rotten condition. The fairways play like mud bunkers and watery rough. Just sad, used to be a great course.

The course is a great layout, bit it is very difficult which makes it play slow. The condition at this time era not so good. To much frost damage.
Uh… I don’t think they get frost damage in Escondido. And, if you’ve ever seen true frost damage, you would know it never damages the ENTIRE course.
