Carlton Oaks has a long history of tournament golf. Curtis Strange won the 1974 NCAA Championships on the course before Perry Dye redesigned the layout and stretched it to 7,400 yards in the 1980s. The Carlton Oaks Lodge, Ascend Hotel Collection, offers 51 modernized, Asian-inspired rooms just steps from the clubhouse, its Oaks Bar & Grill and the outdoor pool and jacuzzi.Facts

A mixed bag
The course layout and design is one of the most unique and challenging you will find in San Diego. The condition of the course however is pretty bad. The tee boxes have super long grass, so much that there is heavy turf interaction with teed up driver. The fairways have sparse grass and the up keep and removal of leaves etc is nonexistent. The driving range is the worst I’ve ever seen mats are very old and it looks like you are hitting in to a junkyard. The greens were in good shape and the green layouts are challenging. Pace of play was bad on my visit there was no starter to properly space groups out.

Decent Value
decent value for the price. Great course layout however even after last weeks rainstorm the course was pretty burnt out and not in good condition.

Great value for the dollar
This was my 1st time playing Carlton Oaks. There are enough tee positions to meet your level of player. I found the fairways a little sparse grass-wise but definitely playable.
The greens rolled nicely even with being aerated in the past month. There is a lot of fall tree damage around the course to be removed but it didn't hinder play.
Overall a course I would play again and well worth the price of the round!

Conditions are a mess.
First and last time playing here. Poorly maintained and managed. Not worth it.

There is a rude player. He asked without hesitation that I had taken his ball. It was a really terrible experience. I totally lost my play.

Nice Layout but Rough Conditions
Pro Shop and Bar Staff were friendly and the course layout is nice, but the condition of the course was poor in places from tee boxes to fairways to greens. Also, course markings did not clearly direct you through the course.

How on earth did people give this 4 stars?
This course was a goat track not worth $65 with a cart. Where was the grass? The greens will be ok in 2 weeks once the aeration is complete. However, there was no golf now notification regarding the playing status. Good layout and it’s apparent that at one time this course was probably a great deal, but it’s nowhere near a 4.0.
