Golf now customers beware of the hot tee time rate if you want a good round.
The course is beautiful, the facilities stunning. The bartender really new her craft.
The club pro assistant Jeremy was very friendly. I am assuming the older gentleman in the club house is the club pro. He could work on his customer service skills. Very cold and clearly not favorably told golfers who pick the hot tee time rate, as he made a little comment about golf now bookings.
We went out at the 8:05 time, which was perfect weather wise because it was very hot when we rolled up to the club house at 12:10. It also made for a fast round, which, we needed because we were driving 9 hours to get home after the round.
However, it meant we had to contend with sprinklers that were on during our round, mowers who felt no need to stop while we played and even at 10:10 the sprinkler system on 10 soaked my cart.
I would have felt that we were disregarded because we were 3 female golfers, if the pro had not made the golf now comment when we checked in. Our fourth had a sore back after 4 days of play and opted out of the dragon to rest for the morning. I wonder if he had been along if the sprinklers would have been turned off.
The sad part it we had been discussing playing the Dragon for 2 years and finally everything fell in place for a trip.
Personally, I recommend Whitehawk or Grizzly Ranch over the Dragon.
Return trip
Played 8/23/2015 and got slayed so I had to return for a rematch but this time alone. Made a few more pars but a few higher "other" scores as well.
Just a top notch facility and ultra friendly helpful staff.
They welcomed me back by name in the pro shop!
A must play if you enjoy mountain golf, but expect to be humbled if you're not a stick. (low handicap)
The Dragon
Very good course. Great views on a very challenging layout. Long narrow fairways, small tough greens, and some blind shots...everything you want to test your patience. Be sure to read tips on scorecard if playing for the first time.
Playing the Dragon
First time playing the golf course and it was a lot of fun to play. Elevation tee changes make it a challenge and the second shots are difficult to elevated greens. There are fungus problems on some of the greens. The staff was really cool, let us tee off earlier than our tee time. Overall, it was worth the drive out.
Great Course with Great Surroundings
For late summer course in excellent condition. Greens fast but really great shape overall. Can get warm so pick your time of day or weather. Wonderful day from Reno to come up have lunch and play golf. About an hours drive.
Challenging golf with beautiful views
The dragon is a very challenging course. There are a lot of tee shots where you have to be very precise. Driver is not the best option on most holes. I had a great time playing this course. I played in the very 1st tee time of the day and had the entire course to myself, so pace of play was not a problem. It was disappointing that I was ahead of maintenance so the greens weren't cut and completely dew covered. I'm sure the greens were good after they were cut which was usually right after I played. I wish I wouldn't have been on a tight schedule so I could have let the mower go through and I could have played on freshly cut and smooth greens. There are a couple of quirky holes but overall I would recommend this course if you are in the area.
Mountain Joy
What an absolutely beautiful course!! Played it for the 1st time and looking forward to my next outing.
Downside - no ATM available on site and no ball scrubbers on the carts or course, so bring a wet towel to keep your golf balls clean.
Dragon
Spectacular. Beautiful and challenging. A great afternoon.
Make The Trip!!!
Ok so I was really excited to go and play the Dragon, I had heard some really nice things about it. Let me just say that my expectations were exceeded. We pulled up and the two nice young men grabbed our bags and gear from the trunk and loaded them up right away on our cart. They gave us parking instructions for our car, where to pay and purchase anything we needed from the pro shop. Range and putting green were in excellent shape! I read through all of the reviews on this course before we decided to play, some said it was way too hard and unfair, others said it was playable. Truth is the course is very difficult, but not unfair. You are playing up in the mountains so there is a good amount of elevation change, some places you just can't miss or you will lose your ball. That being said the course is not unfair and good shots are rewarded. The one caveat is that local knowledge will go a long way to improving your score, expect a higher than normal score because the course is tough and the wrong miss will make a difficult recovery. Course wasn't crowded and we were able to enjoy the quiet surroundings. Go and you will be planning your next trip back before you finish the front 9!
Absolute Beauty!!
Pulling up to the course your immediately impressed with the gourgeous clubhouse! Then the first tee to the last whole is an absolute blast to play! If your like me around a 15 handicap don't expect to shoot your career best, the course will eat you alive!! Rarely had a flat lie and the greens are incredible tough with bunkers protecting them on all sides. A++ will def be playing again soon!
best course ever played
bring extra balls to be safe ,this course will test your best
Softened, but still hard & spectacular
They'll tell you how it used to be harder, how the greens have been softened and some troublesome trees have been removed. All true, but the Dragon is still one of the most difficult courses in the world. The reason? Nearly every hole is built on the side of Golf Mountain, which means errant tee shots and missing greens means lost golf balls. Fortunately, the local rule is to play these lost balls as a hazard, but it's still difficult to score. The upside is that the Dragon is one of the most beautiful golf courses you'll ever play. And if you're on your game, there can be no deeper satisfaction that stringing together pars and an occasional birdie out here. Plus the clubhouse, a Frank Lloyd Wright design, is one of the most unique and coolest you'll find in the USA.
Greatly Improved
I've reviewed this course before and it seems like they took my suggestions. They addressed the first and ninth greens by flattening them a bit. You don't cringe when you are on those greens now as they are no longer a guaranteed three put. The other great improvement is the removal of a tree on number six that was seemingly in the middle of the fairway at the dogleg. Also, number 15 had two trees that were where a good drive would be just short of and in your way to the green, not only is one tree gone but they took 'em both out. That is now a fun hole and a fair one. This course's playability has greatly improved over the last few years thanks to smart ownership and management.
Majestic Mountain Course
We got a great deal and a great tee time, this course is in excellent condition and is a lot of fun to play despite how challenging it is. This course will humble any level of golfer. We played in just over 3 hours and felt like we had the course to ourselves. A very enjoyable and relaxing experience for all. This course is just about an hour from Reno and well worth the drive.
Beautiful Course
The course was in good shape overall. But greens were a bit slow. Great views from the course.
Well Worth Playing
Always wanted to play this course and finally saw a very good deal on golfnow for $15.00, just had to make the drive. I am glad I did because the weather was beautiful, just a couple of people on the course in the late afternoon, pretty much had the course to myself. The greens had been aerated but they were in good shape, just a little hard to get used to speed wise. The fairways were also being plugged and raked, most had been raked already so you did get a good roll. The golf course was beautiful and very well maintained. All the work was being done on the course to get ready for winter as the course will close this weekend or before if it rains and snows in the next day or two. Very tough course but I enjoyed the course as well as the beauty and the wildlife. I don't see anyone being disappointed in this course and I personally will play it again. If you like playing different courses this would be one to play.
Difficult and Fun
Beautiful course with first class facility. Staff was welcoming and very friendly. The course is as hard as any as I play. It is truly a mountain course. You play this one for fun and not necessary for the score. Unless you are a low handicapper, you will lose balls and score high. I was surprised and disappointed that on a couple of the holes, you have houses lining the fairway. On hole ten, with your drive, you actually thread the ball between a small lake and the neighbors!
Teeth of the Dragon
This course is worth the trip from Tahoe City or Truckee. I has all the challenges of top courses and if you like elevation changes there are plenty of tees perched up in this valley. Having knowledge of the distances would help on the card but there are some helpful notes to make the first time bearable. All together if you want to play a beautiful course make a reservation anytime there isn't snow on the ground as the course is kept in great shape and the surrounding resort is growing so it won't be going anywhere.
Every Hole a Challenge
Tough course that actually used to be even more difficult. The greens seemed to be about 2 numbers faster on the stimp meter than only a month ago. The 1st and 9th greens need an overhaul, a guaranteed 3 putt awaits you on those two unfair greens. I am sure many players have 4 putted those greens. Two trees in the middle of 15 is borderline ridiculous, remove the one on the right and that hole becomes fair, few golfers complain about difficulty but we all complain about something that is unfair. Nobody likes hitting a perfect drive right down the middle only to wind up not having a chance to hit the green. I still love the course but it needs to address the 3 issues above.
Phenomenal Course at great value
Even though this course is a 1+ hour ride from my home it is well worth it and all the more so for the low rate and fast play. I was expecting to be paired up and have at least a 4-1/2 hr round (tough tough course that does not lend itself to fast play for lot of people) I was surprised how fast I got around (3 hrs). Even had time to hit some balls at the range afterwards.
