Squaw Valley Golf
Greens were slow and rough and not typical of a "resort" course. Yardage markers were few and far between. Was ok paying the lower "hot deal" price - but would not pay full price.
Bring extra balls
If you care about your score, play with someone who knows the course as there's a few surprises. Course starts as a mountain course (5 holes) and ends in the valley marshy links with target golf. It was Windy in afternoon, adding to the fun. It's mostly Marsh so if it's not Windy, I suspect you'll need deet or similar.
Great day out
First time playing this course. After reading the reviews, I was a little concerned about losing a bunch of golf balls. I listened to the golf shop guy and played the vast majority of my drives to 200-220 yard range. Mostly kept it is in ball and lost two balls. Enjoyed the course. Lots of great views from the course. Had a real good time.
Ball eating course
The staff was great. The area is beautiful . That said, the fairways are very narrow with lots of thick swamp grass to clear so make sure you have plenty of extra balls in your bag. But it was an interesting and fun course I would play again.
Links shminks
Layouts of holes unfair and very problematic.
Tee boxes old school. Carries way too far and not fun. Losing a dozen balls ridiculous. My worst round in 5 years.
Target Golf.
Not for the every day woman golfer. To much carry. Not good condition for where it is. The most positive is the beautiful setting.
Challenging mountain and valley course
Course in great shape. Would have loved to have had more holes on the mountain, but guess they used all the land up there they could. The valley holes were extremely difficult with long grass and blind landings. Could have used a forecaddie. If you didn't keep it in the fairways, your ball was lost more times than not. Enough water to keep it interesting. Beautiful scenery looking at the ski area and chair lifts. Would probably play it better the second time as would know the layout and where to hit. Would play again if in the area.
Unfair!!!
I am a 12 handicap who consistently shoots in the high 70's. Unless you are deadly accurate (and long) with long irons and fairway woods this course is not for you. The fairways are narrow and long with OB on both sides on most holes. Granite just off fairways creates some wild bounces, often into areas you need a chainsaw and machete to find your ball. Rarely do I lose more than one ball a round. I stopped counting after 7 and that was on the front nine. Three of those hit the green on approach, rolled off the back, and disappeared into the swamp that surrounds most of the course. I often play with my wife who is not long, but hits the ball dead straight. She only lost 8 balls for the round which, to me, was a great accomplishment. On the upside the pace was great. We tee'd it up at 1 PM and there were no other golfers in sight (I wonder why?). Beautiful views of the mountain and ski slopes. The stream running through the course was lovely.
P.S. Large areas of cart path are wood, over the aforementioned swampland. Bring your power tools, or hip waiters, as multiple boards are loose and the cart could disappear at any time. Have fun! After taking this abuse twice, we won't be back. Twice because I really didn't believe this course could be so cruel. And at my age my memory is no longer reliable.
A challenging, but fun link course.
I played this course on a cloudy and windy day with 25 mph wind. Strong wind and a difficult layout make it very challenging to play. Even so, I enjoyed the course. The fairways and green are well-kept. The course is long, hilly, and is not suitable for walking golfers. It offers fantastic view of wild flower and mountain scenery. You need to bring a lot of golf balls as many fairways are narrow, and the roughs are thick, especially if you are not used to link golf.
The fee may be a little high, but playing it is a worthwhile experience.
Too difficult!!
You need to be a golfer who can always land in the middle of the fairway. If not all you are doing is looking for your balls which is impossible to find.
The course is pretty though but I will not play it again.
bad greens
I find this course to be fun but with the poor greens and spotty fairways, it looses a lot. On a chip shot to the green, you will get bounces in all directions. I understand it has a lot of winter snow though. Will come back later this summer and see if the greens have improved.
Short and tight
Course plays fairly short and very tight. Narrow landing areas and skinny fairways. Nice greens, good and fast.
bad greens
Except for the greens the course was great shape after a hard winter. Enjoyed the scenery and had a good experience overall.
Spectacular
Wow, what a beauty of a golf course.
Unfortunately it wS very windy when we played, so our scores were below expectations. But to be honest some fairways are so narrow even on another day it would be difficult to play our handicap.
We loved every minute of it.
Unreal
Course weather and price were unbeatable! Check in was seamless, clubs and cart waiting for me....no driving range but a net. Course was perfect and the greens were fast!!
Squaw Creek golf course
This is a nice time of year for mountain golf. The crowds have thinned out; but unfortunately so have the pace of play staff. The greens at Squaw Creek were in really nice shape and rolled fast and true; they were also receptive to approach shots. Kudos to the staff.
One slow group of young "hotshots" kind of blemished the experience with slow play. A foursome of ladies was four holes ahead of them with a 15 minute head start. I would recommend this course and plan to play it again. Very nice layout.
Tale of two 9's
This course starts off in the wooded mountainside and ends up like a links course. It's tight at the beginning but opens up in the end. They give you a yardage book which helps a lot if you have never played there. Like any course, the second time around would be easier by knowing the distances from hazards and green layout. The terrain and mountain scenery make this place special.
Great Staff
Bring lots of balls. Narrow fairways, lots of carries and lots of trouble. Nice views. The course was not crowded and the staff is very accommodating. (With the possible exception of the person at the pro shop who checked me in. Both times I was in the shop I was the only person there but I almost felt like I was bothering her.) Everyone else at the resort is really great. My kudos to the starter who really took great care of me and yes, she was a women. They also have a cart "boy". You have to love a golf course where gender doesn't matter.
Beautiful Views, Tough Play
This is one of the most beautiful courses in the Lake Tahoe, Reno area. Their are great views of Squaw Valley on almost every hole. It was a good value for the price we paid.
The course design is very tight. Club selection is tee and driver is rarely needed. Course management is the key criteria to be successful at this course.
Also, there is no driving range at the course, just a net. Come ready to play.
Highly recommend!
My brother in law and I had an overall great experience. Free valet, they carried our clubs to the starter. Putting green definitely a must before hitting the course to find your speed. Course was in amazing shape! Plus, not only are the views of the surrounding mountains spectacular, we saw a coyote too!
