Bad experience at a course I used to really enjoy
Played golf here today and while it was Easter , and I understand no one likes working on the holiday our greeting was a bit underwhelming to say the least. Pro shop attendant was less than excited to ring us up, starter looked at our receipt and mentioned that we “must have gotten a discount because of the time or because the greens were messed up”. This should have been an indication. While 85 dollars is pretty inexpensive , it was not inexpensive enough for the condition the greens were in. I have played many courses over the years and been disappointed by punched greens and rough conditions, and most of the time you get warned ahead of time about punched greens. The greens were completely bare and honestly we should have turned around right after the first hole but we were already committed.
It is a shame as I have played the course many times in the past and have really enjoyed the layout, but after this experience I don’t think I will be back. On the bright side the woman working the grill was great as was the man working the cart barn at the end of our round.
Good value
Have played this course many times over the years. Seems to have been forgotten about by golfers this season. Greens rolled well and great pace of play
Greens
I’ve played this before and the greens were not an issue. They look and play awful. They scrapped all the grass off so it’s literally black packed dirt.. fairways and other part of course is fine.
I am not sure who shoudl be embarrased more, Westin, or GolfNow
What an experience. Got to the course for a 7:30 tee time. As we were dropping off our cubs, they apologized and said all of the greens had been killed of due to a groundskeeping error. Not time to go elsewhere with all of us there, and no notification of the problem from either The Westin of GolfNow. We basically threw our money away. Its the same as paying to to play basketball at the Forum, and being told when you arrive, hey were sorry, but you can only dribble around the court. The baskets are broken and not available.
It is disappointing that both Westin and GolfNow are so greedy that they don't notify you of the problem, but take your money and tell you sorry.
Not only will I will never suggest anyone ever play at the Westin Rancho Mirage, I will actively tell people to stay away from there, and stay away from using GolfNow.
Very disappointed, and feel scammed.
Not the course we played in November
The greens are all mostly dead, more dirt than grass. Had we known we wouldn’t have played there. Disappointed with Golf Now that this wasn’t on there Web Site. It wasn’t a Hot Deal, it was a Burnt Deal. Don’t play there.
Surly staff and poorly maintained course
from the starter to the "player assistant" we encountered on the course, both need some lessons in hospitality and being nice to the customers. while fairways were green, rough was in much worse shape than other courses we played in the area, e.g., Indian Canyons (both courses) & Escena.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re truly sorry your experience fell short.
Early heat stress has impacted several greens, and we’re working aggressively toward improved conditions soon.
We’d appreciate the chance to speak with you and make this right at info@westinranchomiragegolf.com.
Pete Dye Golf Shop
Best condition so far
I can't believe how much better this course is, conditions wise than the Pete dye course. The help even new about the greens at Pete dye. They said I should get my money back.
Can't believe they share a name.
No go
They are having major issues with their greens. Looks like you are putting on dirt. I would avoid the course based on greens conditions. Layout is fine. Fairways are good. Rough is good. And for the price, not worth it.
18 Dead Greens
Showed up and noticed the 18th green was brown dirt. Asked the ProShop why it wasn’t posted on Golf Now when booking. They stated it was. I did not receive the message, so I am posting: Do Not play here if you want to putt during your round. The greens were scorched to dry dirt during the heat wave in March and someone forgot to water more with the heat. They are the only course in the Coachella Valley that lost their greens, although they will tell you otherwise. It’s really sad actually. This is a fun resort course, aside from usual slow play, it is a fun course. You will want to avoid this course because of the dead greens. I anticipate that the greens will be dead until the over-seed in October. I wish that I would have known, I definitely would not have played there. I tried to cancel, but it was too close to the time of play and GolfNow would not refund my money.
And . . . the starter is a jerk. I think his name is Levi. He looks pretty unkempt and usually has alcohol on his breath. He does a terrible job as starter. Tried to send us off as a five some and was too dumb to look at the name and times on the receipts. When called out for not reading the receipts, he was sarcastically rude, which is his baseline. A true Mr. Personality.
Our day started on the wrong foot with the rude restaurant worker, who was snippy with my wife when she ordered breakfast burrito
Our day started on the wrong foot with the rude restaurant worker, who was snippy with my wife when she ordered breakfast burrito (our tee time was 10:20, we were there abt 40 minutes beforehand, so not before opening time, and with a whole lot of day ahead of us). The range was good, as expected. The starter was very hospitable, although he got caught in a conversation in the parking lot when we were looking to tee off, so we had to cool our heels a little at the entrance to course. Course was in really rough shape, especially the rough. Cart attendant said they hadn't been watering frequently enough in the past and that we should have enjoyed to sparse grass as weeks earlier the rough was just dirt/sand. There was no on-course beverage cart. Needless to say, we stay for the "19th hole". We've been trying out different courses in the Valley over the last 6 years, this is on our "DO NOT RETURN" list for now.
Greens are scorched
Should have been informed of the greens being 95% dead. Worst I have ever seen anywhere.
18 scorched greens
I am a local, who plays this course several times a year. I booked a time on golf now and showed up to find 18 scorched greens. I had no warning that the greens were dead. I noticed on the shuttle ride in that the 18th green was dead. The Proshop tried to assure me that it wasn’t every green. But it was every green. The greens were literally scorched earth. The dirt was cracking and flaking. The Proshop tried to act like every green in the area suffered the same consequences from an unexpected heat wave. It was unusually hot in March, but I can assure you that all of the courses that I play in the area had enough sense to increase their watering schedule. The greens keeper should be fired. It was a waste of money. We had to play a 2 putt rule because it was senseless to try to putt.
In addition, the starter tried to send me out as a five some some because he was too stupid to read the receipts. This guy Levi usually has alcohol on his breath by noon. Some foreigner showed up on the wrong day and thought that he had a 12:32 tee time. After a 10 minute delay and a trip back to the Proshop, I figured it out. In the end, if the starter would have just looked at the receipt, it was obvious. When I called him out for not looking at the receipts,, he told me that “they were hiring and I could work there if I wanted “ sarcastically. I won’t be back. When I book a round for $100+, I don’t expect to be insulted for pointing out the obvious. And I expect greens that I can actually putt on. It was a wasted round. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place.
Disappointed with greens and stuff was rude
Was looking forward to playing this course only to discover the greens were in atrocious condition; essentially putting in dirt. Many of the sand traps were filled with water, even though it’s been very hot, well above average.
Pace of play was very good. Staff was not friendly and when my brother went to speak with some in the pro shop following our round, the staff member didn’t acknowledge him.
Nice Day Out
Very friendly staff when arriving. Got off at the booked time and played in about 31/2 hours. Greens rolled true and fast. Fairways were plush. Lots of mounding and patchy winter grass if you get off the fairway. Drove out from Riverside and was worth the drive. Thanks for a pleasant day.
Disappointed
We’ve played the Dye course numerous times in the past and always enjoyed the layout. However the reference to “some” damage to the greens is more accurately described as all greens are in poor condition. Between putts and chips, more than 1/2 your shots are impacted so you may as well go to a driving range if you’re trying to get your early season game in. I haven’t experienced similar heat stress issues as other area courses in the week I’ve been in the area.
We appreciate your candid feedback and are sorry your round didn’t reflect the quality we aim to deliver.
Early heat stress has impacted several greens, and we’re working toward improved conditions soon.
We’d value the chance to connect with you at info@westinranchomiragegolf.com
Greens are just dirt , especially the front 9.
Traps are tough. Greens slope towards traps in many places.. green surfaces are mostly dried mud.. playing partners paid less than half what I paid, and we all paid golfnow.
I never do this, but i would like a refund, please.
Weaving through the neighborhood
I will score better the next time I play here. Surprise traps and water for first timer looking into morning sun. Friendly staff. Hard to find first tee. Great pace of play at 0740.
We’re grateful for your feedback and apologize for the conditions you encountered.
Early heat has stressed parts of the course, and we’re working quickly toward improved conditions soon.
