Putt with caution on the Blue
One putt changed my perception of the Blue. I still gave it five stars, but when you hit a decent (if not good) putt on the seventh green and it rolls down a severe drop-off into a bush just feet from the water ... well, that's where I draw the line on a green being overcooked by the architect. The Blue greens are the fastest on property and quite dangerous. I learned the hard way.
Funny thing is, I still think the Blue has some of the best holes at Streamsong - the first, the fourth, the sixth, the 13th, etc. You'll enjoy your round. Just make sure your flat stick is ready.
Streaming Blue is the Best!
Spent 4 days here in October--immediately after Black opened. Played Black on the first day--review elsewhere--played Blue the second day and absolutely LOVED it! What a gorgeous course with elevation, forced carries, and challenging for all levels. Beats Black hands down! Had "Trout" as our caddie, who knows the course like the back of his hand and was relaxed, fun and a great addition to our experience at Streamsong. We have played all over West Florida and this course was really memorable. Greens were in great shape, big enough to allow golfers to get on, but small enough for normal golf. Black course's greens are like football fields! Blue challenges your iron play like no other here.
The whole Streamsong resort was A+++ and worth every penny and minute of the drive from Sarasota.
The Best In Florida
I Played the Black Course a week after it opened.
It was a perfect day for golf with a nice breeze.
walking only was allowed. Caddie and I spent the next 4 hours just hitting golf shots to wherever he told me to aim. A lot of shots you don't see land due to the hills. Great place for mid to low handicaps.
Lots of elevation. The staff were all excellent.
The greens are large and undulating. Great place to
spend a few days with your Buds. All three courses are enjoyable.
Best of Streamsong
Take all the things you like about the Red and the Black and eliminate the shortfalls and you end up with the Blue. Scenic, visually stimulating, challenging, etc. the Blue has it all. A great mix of long and short holes with often a variety of ways to approach the hole. The greens are more interesting than the Red without approaching the extremes of the Black. The green on the par 3 fifth has to be the longest, narrowest green I’ve ever seen. Great use of the dunes for blowout bunkers.
While the entire Streamsong experience rivals those at Pinehurst, Kohler and Bandon Dunes, the Blue is the course that most makes us want to return.
Biggest single greens you’ll ever play
The Black is quite different than its sister courses. Fairways wide enough to land a 747 on combined with greens that could double as parking lots. As the course advisor says, you’ll hit more fairways and greens than you usually do, but then the fun starts. The greens are the course’s defense with 3 and 4 putts much more common than normal. The punchbowl 9th green has to be seen to be believed. While the course had a year to grow in, the fairways are still a bit thin/tight compared to the other courses.
On the downside, it’s quite a long walk - at least 8 miles, though flatter than Red or Blue. Can lead to very long rounds. It is also not as scenic as the other courses. But it’s an interesting and imaginative change from the original pair of courses - a horse of a different color. Time will tell, but would not see this jumping into the courses ratings at the same lofty perch as the Red and Blue.
A scenic, entertaining walk
The course lives up to all the praise and high ratings it has received. It’s a challenging but not outrageous layout, that mixes the scenery, elevation changes and just good solid golf hole design. You’ll see elements of their work at Pinehurst #2 with the sandy edges of fairways and very puttable approach areas around the greens. Greens are more subtle than their Blue and Black cousins, but there are more forced carries. Highly recommend taking a caddie.
Phenomenal course
What a phenomenal course! The course layout was brilliant, staff was very friendly! Caddy Mike was great. What an absolute joy to play this course, it was definitely worth the wait! Definitely one of my favorites!!
Great Experience
Streamsong Black is unlike anything I have ever seen. The bunkers and waste areas create a very different look. The fairways are wide which makes the course playable, but the greens are extremely challenging. All-in-all a lot of fun. If you go there, ask for Kenny...he is one of the best caddies I have ever played with.
Great Golf Course with Scenic Views
I played all three golf courses at Streamsong and the Red course was my favorite. The layout and scenery is terrific and the greens are not as difficult to read compared to the Blue and Black greens. The course is a good challenge from the combination tees. Fore-caddie Bud was awesome. Highly recommend this golf resort which is out in the middle of nowhere.
After my second round on the Red Course, I am still looking for redemption. The course was in fantastic shape. I have never played in as much wind as I did that day. It was actually playing into the putts which made it difficult. I don't need any help missing putts! I always enjoy my experience at Streamsong as this was my fourth visit to the property. Hoping to play the Black course in the near future. Must see Resort! The rooms are phenomenal.
Doak being Doak
The original sister course to the Red, this Tom Doak course gives you everything you'd expect from one of today's best architects. It offers multiple lines of play from tees for those thinking their way around the course, but has generous fairways for the average golfer just looking to hit it around the course without losing a ball. The green complexes are a bit more severe than those on the Red, but not as crazy as the Black.
With multiple tee boxes, holes set up entirely differently depending on skill level of the golfer. The further up you go the fewer forced carries and trouble directly in front of the golfer with those hazards testing the better player.
Look for other Doak items like creative bunkering and strategic elevation change. The course begins atop a massive dune for maybe the best view on the entire property...especially nice during sunrise.
C&C golf at its finest
The Red course at Streamsong by Coore & Crenshaw is subtly different than its sister (Blue). With generous fairways golfers of all abilities should enjoy making their way around the Red course. One key difference between the Red and Blue are on the greens. My personal opinion is the Red greens are more subtle in nature than most of the Blue allowing for a few more long putts to roll in...assuming you can find the right pace and line. There is plenty to admire on the course from the massive dunes to a few enormous bunkers.
The "signature" par 3 is number 16. A Biarritz green on steroids...easily 170 over water, the green is ~70 yards front to back with an equally enormous swale in the middle. Just an awesome hole.
Black and Bold
After playing Gil Hanse's new creation, I can say I really liked the new Black course, but I feel the ‘incredibly fun’ narrative does a disservice to the average golfer.
The course is everything you’d expect from a modern Gil Hanse design: big, mostly friendly fairways, and creative landscapes and landforms. It’s also walking-only, either with a caddie or carrying your own bag. I chose the latter and had a caddie in my group who was on his third loop around the course. Regardless of who carries the bag, the course is a hike (more so in 90-degree heat of Florida). Playing the black tees at 6,759 yards was more than plenty golf course for me, to the point where I can’t imagine even scratch players choosing to play the green tees, which stretch to 7,331 yards. The transitions from greens to tees aren’t long but in many places require climbing or descending significant hills.
The overall movement of the land is truly something to behold. But the element of the course that will likely receive the most attention is the green complexes. Originally, they were supposed to have a bit of fringe that was going to be barely longer than the cut of the green, but as the course was growing in Hanse and the superintendent chose to save the mowing hassle. Now, the green and the fringe (of sorts) are the same length. This makes the greens even more gigantic than scripted. You’ll also notice sprinkler heads on the greens, which makes putting over and around them interesting.
Old Macdonald at Bandon Dunes usually lays claim to having the largest average green size in North America. However, the greens on the Black course are on HGH (Hanse Growth Hormone). There are greens on the Black course that make greens on Old Mac look like a postage stamp. Not to mention they are wildly undulating.
Overall, the course is great. But at least know what you're getting into before you get overly excited about 4-putting all day.
Great Streamsong track
We played the Red course on Twice in our short trip. We chose the combo tees and weren’t disappointed. Even from the estimated 6300 yds it was a solid test. The architects used elevation changes and existing dunes to frame the holes and create target lines and depth. After playing the Blue and Black courses, we thought that the greens on Red were the most fair and least undulating. The nines are definitely different in their level of difficulty with the back nine being the more challenging. It was a course which, if played well, invites you back and if played poorly pulls you back for another try.
Kudos go to the golf staff, caddies, bag drop attendants, shuttle drivers(Mercedes vans-great touch), restaurant staff and the nicest front desk staff we have experienced. Everyone was personable and friendly and genuinely committed to serving their guests.
Isolation and Beauty: Blue Edition
Finally got to see the legendary Streamsong! It was everything I expected, and not what I expected at all!
For starters... calling this place remote is an understatement. It's a large and beautiful property, and it's not really close to ANYTHING. So don't plan multiple days here unless you are staying onsite. As you'd expect, the facilities are wonderful and the bar has an amazing selection of scotch... but you came here for golf...
This was my second round of the day after playing Red in the morning. I hadn't expected the Blue to be available, but they mostly just do walk ups for twilight and the course was wide open after a tournament had been played during the morning. It's also worth mentioning that the replay rate makes for a great deal!
I played alone, walking. I literally didn't see another golfer on the course until I caught a foursome on 16. What a course to absorb without ANY distractions around. Like the Red, this course is a masterpiece.
Blue is a little bit more open than the Red off the tee. My only criticism of the course is that it's really just a bomber's paradise. I never even thought twice about cranking driver off every tee. I prefer more variety off the tee.
However, the Blue has much more severe undulations and elevations changes than Red. I found this led to more blind shots and tough short game shots around the greens. So the course will challenge your shotmaking... just not as much off the tee.
If I had to pick one, I'd pick Blue. I thought it was more fun and a little more challenging. However, I think you have to play both (and I guess now all three!). The property is beautiful and it's cool to see how different the courses are despite having so much in common.
Streamsong is a golfer's paradise. Go. Now. Bring your friends.
Isolation and Beauty: Red Edition
Finally got to see the legendary Streamsong! It was everything I expected, and not what I expected at all!
For starters... calling this place remote is an understatement. It's a large and beautiful property, and it's not really close to ANYTHING. So don't plan multiple days here unless you are staying onsite. As you'd expect, the facilities are wonderful and the bar has an amazing selection of scotch... but you came here for golf...
I started my day walking the Red course. I got paired up with a couple fellas from NYC. It was a pretty slow moving day. They told me to expect a 4.5 hour round... that was about right, but it felt slower.
This course has some tough tee shots. There are some forced carries, and there are several holes where you have to really commit to the line you want to take. Bunkers are hungry for any wayward shots.
I didn't think the course played super fast (like Chambers or Tetherow), but the greens are definitely tricky and slippery.
The course is a masterful work of art. It's great to just take it all in.
While the course provides good variety and challenge, I expected it to be a little more brutal. At the end of the day, it's a resort course... it's challenging enough for skilled players, but not so challenging that a player of any skill level can't enjoy it. I think that's the right way to go to make this a mainstay of golf buddy trips for a long time.
Blue Course certainly doesn't give me the blues
After playing all three courses at Streamsong, I'm torn on which one is my favorite, but the Blue Course is definitely a candidate. Designed by Tom Doak, I love the way this course flows from the elevated tee shot on 1 to the difficult par-4 18th and everything in between. It definitely has a "miminalist" links feel to it with beautifully sculpted greens complexes, a great variety of par 3s and never a dull moment. You can play bump and run or fly it to the hole, which means there are endless possibilities.
A more than worthy complement to the Black and Red courses at Streamsong
Different from the other two golf courses in scope and design, but consistent with the use of the unique topography at this former phosphate mining site between Orlando and Tampa, the new Black Course at Streamsong Resort is a perfect complement to the golf already there and it already has its own identity. Designed by Gil Hanse, who also did the Olympic Course in Brazil as well as several other excellent designs as of late, the Black gives Streamsong a trio of courses designed by the some of most respected teams in the modern era. The other two courses are designed by Tom Doak (this one, the Blue, is more links-like than the other two) and Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore (Red). Hanse and his partner Jim Wagner have created a layout that is all their own with the Black. With 11 acres of greens that run seamlessly into the fairways and large bunkers, the course can be played just about any way you want, on the ground, in the air, or a combination of both since the greens are large and undulating, but also receptive. There are drivable par 4s, a cool, short par 3 and four par 5s that are all very different from each other. The new course also comes with its own clubhouse, which fits into the overall contemporary design of the resort. All-in-all, the Black is worth another trip out to Streamsong, and if you've never been here before, you'll want to play all three.
Blue is the best
Blue is by far the better of the two course at Streamsong. It's drama starts on the first tee which appears to be the highest point on the property and the most scenic along with the picture you can take on hole #7, the course's signature hole. It is the more demanding walk than Red( Red is no slouch either) and if you're not use to demanding walks, you will feel it when you're done and the next day .
It also offers the stiffer test as the tee shots are more demanding and the approaches require a little more precision. Doak's style is minimalistic and Blue seems like it was carved right out of the countryside.
the food at Streamsong is average and overpriced. They need an average price menu if people don't feel like Italian or steak. The rooms are fantastic but the modern building just seems out of place for the area it was built.
I would recommend Streamsong to others who haven't been there, but being from Wisconsin and having been to Kohler two dozen times, they have much to improve on to make it a must visit destination.
Florida's #1 resort
My wife and I took a winter escape to Florida's #1 golf resort at Streamsong.
The distance from Tampa is about an hour and it literally is in the middle of nowhere.
the setting is very remote and having played my first Coore and Crenshaw course in Sand Valley 4 months before, I found them to be similar in regards to conditioning and playability as they play fast and firm. The unique terrain is what makes the course different. Elevation and water come into play on Red and they are not kind with the opening hole, a 440+ yard par 4! You can run approach shots into the greens and caddies are a must the scratch Florida's #1 resort off my list but do not first time you play as knowing the proper lines off the tee can make or break your round.
The walk is demanding even with a caddie. I can need to return as a must repeat.
