Alligator on course Photo submitted by u000004256901 on 12/25/2012
Nice mix of holes
Enjoyed the course overall. Lots of water, but there is enough fairway to find and set up a scoring opportunity if you play smart. Greens were in excellent shape. Played 3 rounds from the tips and score improved each day. The only downside was dodging the maintenance crew on several holes during peak times. Looking forward to playing this course again.
Poor condition of fairways.
The front nine is in poor condition and lined by houses. The second nine is much better. The hype on the website makes you think you’ll be in a nature paradise and we were willing to make the drive out to Sanibel. You can play a lot better courses for $90 and easier to get to also. The restaurant was closed for maintenance and the bartender was not friendly to say the least
Dunes 9 Hole round
Great course, short but works well for those of us who no longer have a 250 yrd drive.
Great shape with lots of water and wildlife.
Dunes Golf & Tennis
Short course but challenging, lots of water. Only hit driver 4 times, lots of lay ups off tees. Greens were in great shape as was the rest of the course. Teed off at 9:00 as a foursome and played in 4 hours, good pace of play. A little expensive but it is Sanibel.
Florida Golf
Great course to play. Excellent greens. Nice layouts, but water everywhere. Florida golf
Best course I've played for scenery
Awesome, alligators, flocks of birds dozens of species, fish jumping, flowers, very cool. Course is a bit short but makes up for it with difficult layups and dog legs and water hazards. The greens are very good shape but very nasty alot of slopes and they are elevated.
Would definitely play again.
Fun round on challenging greens
Fun course with lots of water and extremely difficult greens. If you hit your spots and control your distance well, you can score. But if you miss the green on your approach, it is highly likely you will have a difficult shot to an undulating green. The front nine is shorter and will force you to use a variety of clubs off the tee. The back is longer and plays like an entirely different course. Overall, we enjoyed out round very much and look forward to playing the course again!
There were too many players on the course! Long waiting times. No Marshal in sight!
A fun short course
It is always a treat to play the Dunes. The greens were in excellent shape and I never had a bad lie in the fairway. The pro shop staff was exceptionally helpful and courteous. There was a snafu with my booking the tee time through Golfnow, but they resolved it without any additional stress to me.
One last note for anyone playing the course. Take whatever club you need to be in the fairway - even if it's an iron. It's easier to score from the short grass than from the water.
First visit to this course
Course is not long , but played all holes from back tees and must drive over water frequently . Some over 200 yds.
Course knowledge seems important.
Viewed a lot of wildlife , mostly birds but also two ten foot long aligators on banks, This is really nice to see.
Would definitely come back and play if the price is right.
Soggy but Nice
Mildly rainy weather and course was wet but drained well and was in excellent shape. Staff was great getting me out early and I was never held up. Great experience and excellent course despite slightly wet conditions.
Fine...
First, it’s clear Sanibel is not a golf destination. The Dunes is “way” overpriced for what it offers. The course is very short at 5700 par 70, from the back tees. Water on 17 out of 18 holes, but doesn’t come into play as much as you’d think. The layout is a little goofy, due to the limitation of land. This course would be fine, if not for the price. I like playing in the morning and $105 for this course just doesn’t make sense. I tend to play the nicer courses when I have the chance and have no issue paying the going rate to play them, but this doesn’t live up to the expectation. At $50-$75 this would be a different review... a cute little course that makes the most out of what it has. Condition was ok... The greens were inconsistent, slow to medium speed with a couple that were noticeably faster. Bunkers were damp, packed and damp (no rain for days here), obviously lacking maintenance and needing more sand. The back has some solid holes. 14 thru 18 are good finishing holes, with a couple challenging par 4’s, a longish par 3 into the wind and a couple reachable par 5’s. I like that stretch. The course needs one of two things. Either, lower the price and keep it the way it is, or keep the price and bring up the overall course conditions. I understand they have a captive audience, but they could do better.
Plenty of Water
The course, while a bit short on yardage, makes up for it by bringing water into play on almost every hole. The course was in excellent shape with tee boxes, fairways and greens all well maintained. The first nine moved along at a decent pace but the back nine was extremely slow. Other than that it's a track worth considering.
Dunes Day 2
After playing the Dunes course For the 1st time on Monday I decided to try it again on Wednesday to see if I could Improve on my 1st outing. Well I lost 5 balls on Monday and then 6 balls on Wednesday in all that water on a windy day so NO improvement but I still enjoyed the course and the challenges it presents.
