Nice course. Very active resort. Enjoyed the golf.
Course was in pretty good condition. We had excellent weather. Played in a foursome. Total playing time was 5.5 hours as we were waiting on every hole to tee-off. Unfortunately, the people behind us were not as patient as we were and hit into our group a couple of times. After the round we were told that there was a group that went out 1.5 hours ahead of us that held everyone up. We enjoyed the visit to MD from PA despite the slow play and rude players behind us. I would recommend the course based on the layout, conditions and staff. Just be prepared to spend some extra time there if the course is backed up.
Nice course
Course in excellent shape . A very challenging course . Kind of buggy . We played in morning .
For a resort course I thought the bag attendants were very inattentive . . I had to take clubs off cart and load into my car . No one around to wipe off clubs . .
Rocky Gap
The resort is absolutely gorgeous! The course is also very nice. It's a little tight on some holes. We have played it several times and it has always been "cart paths only" as it seems to dry slowly after a rain. This time they did allow us on the cart path side of the rough which was much better. The course was a bit wet and the greens were high since it had been aerated a couple weeks ago.
Worth the Gamble
I happened to find this course prior to driving home to NoVA from WV and it was worth the stopover. Touted as the only Jack Nicklaus Design in Maryland, this course is pretty typical Jack. Carved out of forest and in the mountains there are some ample fairways and others that require precision and course knowledge.
By far the signature is the par 3 sixth hole. Moderate length but plays way downhill with a spectacular view from the tee. Trees in fall foliage are amazing.
Course was in good condition and was an enjoyable round. Front and back nines play differently and almost feel like different courses.
Gorgeous Mountain Golf
Golfed over the July 4th weekend and loved the course. The front 9 is mountainous with a few blind tee shots. You'll definitely need some extra balls for this one. The back 9 is more open, but no less beautiful. The course was in good shape however, they punched the greens a few days before. Aerating before a holiday weekend? Not a great idea. Bumpy greens made for some difficult putts.
The staff was very helpful and friendly, and the pro shop was well stocked. The practice area was wonderful! A nice sand bunker as well as a nice chipping area and putting green. Very nice!
July 4th weekend
Played Saturday and Sunday, July 2 and 3. Great layout, nice variety of holes including some scenic elevated tees. Practice area and range were great. The staff was laid back and very helpful. However, course conditioning needs some work. Tee box positions were beat up, especially on par 3's and didn't appear to be re-positioned between Saturday and Sunday, not sure why. The greens need work; they were punched, slow and bumpy, very disappointed in the fact that they decided to aerate right before a holiday weekend. Also disappointed in the lack of a ranger on the course, took over 5 hours to play on Sunday. This course could easily be a five star experience with some minor tweaks.
Beautiful Course - Beautiful Day
Wrapping up business in Cumberland, I was able to snag a last minute Hot Deal from GolfNow. It was a spectacular late October day in the mountains, sunny with temperatures in the 70's and little wind. The course was in very good condition and the pace of play excellent. Starting at 2:10pm, I had fears about finishing before dark but we rolled in at 5:50 with time to spare. Tough course, rough is thick and penal, and anything that goes into the woods is gone. I lost 6 balls. My play was poor, but it was still a great day.
Mountain Maryland
Rocky Gap Lodge & Resort is an easy drive from Baltimore, Washington, and Pittsburgh. . .the resort entrance is less than 1/4 mile off of Interstate 68 in Allegany County, Maryland.
Most of the front 9 is carved thru the woods. While the fairways are generous, it can be intimidating when there is a rocky cliff to the right of the fairway, and a sharp (as in goat-like) decline to the right.
The back 9 is more open, but still require uphill, downhill, and sidehill shots. One par-3 plays about 2 clubs downhill.
Course conditions are a 4. . .mainly due to circumstances out of the resorts' control. Spring was very wet, summer was nice, September has been very dry. The only other complaint I have is also beyond the control of the resort. . .PLAYERS NOT REPAIRING BALL MARKS AND FILLING IN DIVOTS.
Pace of play is for a weekend foursome. Four to four and 1/2 hours. I have been around during the week in 3 hours.
great hidden gem
My wife and I have made the ride from Pgh 3x this summer to stay and play this course. That should show you how much we like it. Hotel is newer, casino is fun and food tasty.
The course is extremely well maintained. Plenty of tee choices. Front nine is beautiful as it winds thru the mountains. Back is more open. Great golf course which we will continue to enjoy.
Great Day
Excellent playing conditions. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Beautiful scenery.
Gem in the mountains!
Gotta play this course if you're not too far from it. Some really picturesque and challenging holes. Staff was extremely friendly and grateful to have us playing their course, wanted us back, invited us to come back often. Food in the SportsBar after the 18 was also well above average.
Nice course
First time playing lost few balls and was not sure of the landscape of some of the fairways. Good experience.
Beautiful course, tough small greens
Course in great shape. Par 3s really tough holes. Relatively small greens either long and narrow or wide with no depth. Greens had been aerated a couple weeks ago and were rough rolling but with a distinct grain easy to read. Pin placements were tough with very small risk/reward landing areas. Tee boxes level and in nice shape. Beautiful fairways, mix of wide and narrow landing areas. Interesting layout requiring good course management. Can't just pull out the driver on every par 4 and 5. Best hot dog & roll I ever had at a golf course. Excellent Staff!
EXPENSIVE
How did we enjoy our round....well booking through GolfNow was expensive. $196.00 for the 4 of us.....counting green fees, cart and booking expenses that you charge. The two groups in front of us played for a total of $120.00.....they played for $30.00 each both foursomes, just ahead of our Tee Time.
And here we thought Golf Now was a better way to go...!!!!!!!
Tale of two nines
Radical difference between the front and the back, but both in excellent condition. The front is much more scenic, but the back has some really nice holes also.
The one thing I will say about RG, is be prepared for slower play, especially on the front. This is a resort, and thusly, you have a lot of husband wife golf going on, and this course has plenty of teeth for the novice golfer. If you prepare yourself beforehand, no worries.
Fun challenge
Neat layout, reasonably well conditioned. Definitely worth the 45 I paid. A better scorecard with hole layouts would help for some of the blind tee shots, but overall a fun course to play, especially the front 9.
Great course experience but not great service
Have played here before and experience on course was same-- good course, challenging, great conditions. But, service before casino was better--no bag boys at curb, no valet car service as posted, automated doors not automated, information about pro purchases varied by staff .
Will come back but for course not service. When there was service, kids stood around obviously waiting for tips.
But, no one cares about golf when casino brings in $$$$.
Awesome course!
If you are anywhere near this place you have to play. Staff was amazing, due to a VERY early arrival, (2 hours) I was worried about getting off. They said 'no problem' and I was on the first the in 30 minutes. Try that at your local muni.
It was cart path only and it should have been. I still think I lost one that plugged in the middle on the fairway. (that's my story and I am sticking too it!)
Good golfers should try the tips (only 7063) and some great views!
Scenic course; speed up the greens
This is a very beautiful resort course. There are some challenging shots from the tips. The pace of play was excellent and the weather couldn't have been better. My only complaint would be the extremely slow greens.
Love This Course
While the resort seems to be going through some growing pains with confusing parking and moving the golf shop around, the course is a gem. It is a challenge for all levles, but it is fair. The setting and scenery couldn't be better. Great vistas and wildlife make the viewing interesting, but you need to keep your focus. One bad shot on many holes can lead to a big number. I'll definitely come back.
