Wisp Resort

About Wisp Resort
The Wisp Resort’s 172 acres of ski terrain are heaven for winter-sports enthusiasts, but this resort offers so much more year-round. It is an outdoor playground for all ages thanks to Deep Creek Lake and an endless array of mountainous adventures: canopy tours, segways, mountain biking, a mountain coaster, disc golf, 36 holes of regular golf, gem mining, pontoon boat tours, whitewater rafting and flatwater kayaking. The Fantasy Valley and Lodestone golf courses both boast soaring scenery. Lodestone, designed by Hale Irwin, features some of the largest greens on the East Coast.Facts

Pass
More of a muni trying to pass itself off as an elite resort course. “Clubhouse” is in a hut they convert from the ski season. There is no putting green or driving range. Course basically caters to families that are staying at the Wisp Resort. Most clearly don’t play golf regularly. There was literally 4 groups on the par 5 first hole b/c the foursome on the green had apparently never played golf before; was determined to find EVERY ball they shanked into the weeds and backed everyone else up. None of the bunkers were raked and weeds had overgrown portions of the course. Given all factors, I’d recommend driving 15 minutes to play in Oakland or pay an extra $20 and play at Lodestone.
Better stay in the fairway!
Beautiful course and nice layout from tee to green. Not sure it’s worth $100 but it was definitely worth the $50 Hot Deal on GolfNow. The course was in great shape but it’s extremely penalizing if you don’t keep it in the fairway or green. Most of the course is surrounded by knee length fescue that basically eats balls. Bunkers were raked and greens were true. Putting/chipping green was well maintained but the driving range was more like something you’d find at a municipal course. It’s definitely the best course in the Oakland / Mchenry area and I would definitely play it again.
Fantastic views,great layout.
Two complaints: First-sand traps were lousy, grass growing, hard pack, not very well kept. Second- very poor food/snacks selection.
Loved Loadstone Golf Course
From tee boxes to greens the course was well cared for. The views from some of the fairways were incredible. Looking forward to another round tomorrow.
Challenging course
Good layout and in much better condition than last year…great vacation course as challenging and different than standard layouts
Decent Course, overpriced
This course is decent for a weekend golf trip to Deep Creek, but EXTREMELY over priced. The bunkers are not well maintained, the course itself was in fair enough shape, but not $120 worth shape. It is nice and open distinguishable fairways, however there are a lot of blind shots on this course which make for a first time round on the course extremely difficult to know where you’re target is. The pace of play was extremely slow. The starter told us a round for 4 people would be 4 1/2 hours regardless, but the slow/inexperienced vacation golfers in front of us made the round 5 1/2 hours long. Beware of missing fairways and immediately being in the woods. Fairways are big, but the rough is small leading directly into wood lines.
Challenging and fun
Always a great experience at Lodestone. Friendly and helpful staff. Course in great condition except the bunkers, which are in very poor shape.
I played the course 20 years ago as it was originally designed and it was in good condition and challenging but worth playing. It is a true tragedy what they have done to this course with adding new holes but taking away the best ones and turning it into a strange layout with three par fives and three par threes on the front nine and a part 34 on the back nine. The first nine does not return to the clubhouse tent. There’s no water on the course to drink no card girl or bathrooms. The sand traps were in horrible condition and look like they had never been attended to. The only good thing was the pace of play since there were no other people playing the course.
The only thing keeping this course from being a 5 star is the sand traps
Get layout, Friendly staff, tough but fair course with good greens!
Could be an Excellent course
If they would ever rework the sand traps and put sand in them. The course would be 1st class. It definitely would out class Rocky Gap.
Depends what matters
While pulling into the parking lot there was a small black bear knocking over the garbage can which was comical. The wildlife throughout the course is great and The views are spectacular.
The fairways and greens look good but they are wet and slow. The tee boxes are spongy with longer fairway like grass.
For $120/player I’d expect to have gps in carts or at least usb charger. A lot of bunkers in bad condition especially fairway bunkers which they let go growing grass and rocks throughout.
Lodestone
Great course, but bathrooms need to be unlocked. Ok for me. I can find bush but not wife.
Fabulous day
ESPECIALLY with hot deal
Big course
Couldn’t hit a putt hard enough, but greens consistent ( lots recent rain)
Would play again
Midway bathroom locked, otherwise a perfect day
