About Grand Traverse Resort & Spa

The 900-acre Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme became a Michigan landmark in the 1980s on the outskirts of Traverse City as its distinctive 17-floot glass tower was built adjacent to The Bear, a notoriously tough course by Jack Nicklaus. Guests have so many choices among 600 guest rooms and condos, five restaurants and lounges, the Gallery of Shops, four indoor-outdoor pools, an indoor water playground, a 7,000-square-foot spa, a private beach on Grand Traverse Bay, a large health club with five indoor tennis courts and two other courses, The Wolverine by Gary Player and Spruce Run by William Newcomb. The nearby Turtle Creek Hotel and Casino, accessible by a free shuttle, is also owned by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottowa and Chippewa Indians.

Nice value

We played in the afternoon when prices were lower. The course was in great shape, the greens were very receptive and true and bunkers had plenty of sand. Pace of play was a little slow on the front nine but then two of the groups in front of us only played nine which allowed us to fly on the back nine. So our entire time was played in sub-4 hours.

Great course overall!

Enjoyed the course. Nice layout. You can tell course is getting a lot of traffic as tee boxes have a lot of divots. Great value overall. Highly recommend!

Great value course

The course was in good shape, with thick rough that punished errant tee shots. Great value for the area, costing almost $100 less than the other courses at the Grand Traverse Resort.

Awesome Golf Course

Spruce Run may be considered the little brother to the Bear and the Wolverine (even though it is significantly older) but it deserves plenty of recognition itself. The course was in phenomenal shape. The fairways were tight and the greens were slick. Almost every hole was tree lined, and there were multiple times where a hole would look impossible from the looks from the tee box. But there were some excellent holes on the course. There were several magnificent elevation changes, and some very severe doglegs. If traveling to Grand Traverse, don’t overlook Spruce Run because it is just as good as the other two in its own way.

Lovely Experience

Wolverine is a lovely course. It definitely doesn’t have the teeth of its next door neighbor known as “The Bear” but it’s still a good test and a great golf course. The course was in magnificent condition. We played it twice while at Grand Traverse, and both times were a lot of fun. The staff told us that you can normally get quite a bit of rollout on the course, but it rained a lot while we were there, so it was definitely target golf. The fairways are gigantic, with subtle rolls throughout. A shot in the middle of the fairway may be way above or below your feet. The greens are fast and firm out pretty quick. Lots of risk reward type holes where you can take out the dog leg and leave a short iron or wedge into the green. Overall it was a lovely experience!

Awesome Experience

I played the Bear twice this past week. The first round was in the afternoon with winds gusting at around 40 MPH if I had to guess. It was absolutely as tough as advertised. Greens were nearly impossible to hold. The greens were incredibly slick and the wind would even move the ball. The second time was also in the afternoon on a day that we assumed would be a wash out. We decided to “bear” the rain, and attempted it again. On a wet day, the bear is a million times easier. You can shoot for flags. You can hit more club into the layup holes. It makes it a longer course, but the shots into greens are so much easier. Overall, it was an incredible experience!

Great day if you have the time

Great course. Pace of play was a real let down 5 and 1/2 hours. Multiple times we had two to three groups on a tee box and the course Marshall came by multiple times with no sense of how to improve the pace of play. Too bad because this is a great property’. I will not be back unless they can get times under 4 1/2
