About Grand Traverse Resort & Spa

The 900-acre Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme became a Michigan landmark in the 1980s on the outskirts of Traverse City as its distinctive 17-floot glass tower was built adjacent to The Bear, a notoriously tough course by Jack Nicklaus. Guests have so many choices among 600 guest rooms and condos, five restaurants and lounges, the Gallery of Shops, four indoor-outdoor pools, an indoor water playground, a 7,000-square-foot spa, a private beach on Grand Traverse Bay, a large health club with five indoor tennis courts and two other courses, The Wolverine by Gary Player and Spruce Run by William Newcomb. The nearby Turtle Creek Hotel and Casino, accessible by a free shuttle, is also owned by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottowa and Chippewa Indians.

Do You Like Playing Behind A Group of 5?

Slow as all get out. Put us behind a five-some who even never let us pass. If you live on this course rules don’t apply to you and it may ruin other golfers experiences….stay away.

First time playing at Grand Traverse resort. Do like the layout of Spruce Run and the course conditions were pretty good. Greens had been aerated recently but were growing back in and rolled pretty well. Course amenities seemed limited from what I expected for a Grand Traverse resort course, such as lack of GPS on carts. Overall, I would be interested in playing Spruce Run again when I am back In the area.

Super slow play and no ranger help

Normally I like the Resort courses but once in awhile the slow play gets bad, real bad but some rangers help move folks along but not this weekend. It took over 3 hours to play nine holes and no help from the ranger! Not sure if they are over booking or what but because of that ridiculous slow play I had to leave after nine holes because I would have never finished in the 5+ hours a allowed, which by the way has never, ever taken that long! A group or two guys that were behind us also left after nine and there was more behind us. I paid too much money to only be able to play nine holes!

Nice staff, facilities, and course conditions!

Felt guilty for Hot Deal, great value. Staff at Bag Drop, Pro Shop, Starter, Refreshment Cart all in action. Classic course features and good conditions including every trap. Blue Tees plenty long for a challenge.

Excellent track

The staff there was fantastic. Especially Lenny! Friendly and very helpful! The course played well even though they had quite a bit of rain. Only suggestion is they need some closer women’s tees. A little long for my wife.

Really challenging course

The golf course lived up to the hype of being very difficult, especially in the green complexes. If you don’t hit it to the right section of the green or, worse, if you miss the green in one of the cavernous bunkers, you will pay a price.

I played as a single behind another single. We played in about 4.5 hours, but there was no attempt on the part of the course rangers to ask the two foursomes in front of us to let us through, because they were “on time.” I get that, but I could have played in 3-3.5 hours otherwise. It wasn’t bad, but it could and should have been better.

Nice design

Jack and his team did a nice job with the layout and overall course design. Several holes played either uphill or downhill, but never too severe. The small undulating greens are fairly typical for a Nicklas tract, which adds to the overall challenge.

The staff at the check-in counter could use some coaching pertaining to customer service, but other then that, I highly recommend this course as a must play when in the Traverse City area.

Great condition and layout

We played as a twosome and followed a group of 12 so expected delays and we did wait. Layout and conditions of course excellent. My only disappointment was that a Resort course did not have restrooms on the course, only ports potties!

DIFFICULT FOR AVERAGE GOLFERS

Course was in great condition but do not recommend for average golfers due to layout and difficulty.

The greens were lighting fast!
