About Grand Traverse Resort & Spa

The 900-acre Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme became a Michigan landmark in the 1980s on the outskirts of Traverse City as its distinctive 17-floot glass tower was built adjacent to The Bear, a notoriously tough course by Jack Nicklaus. Guests have so many choices among 600 guest rooms and condos, five restaurants and lounges, the Gallery of Shops, four indoor-outdoor pools, an indoor water playground, a 7,000-square-foot spa, a private beach on Grand Traverse Bay, a large health club with five indoor tennis courts and two other courses, The Wolverine by Gary Player and Spruce Run by William Newcomb. The nearby Turtle Creek Hotel and Casino, accessible by a free shuttle, is also owned by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottowa and Chippewa Indians.

Very nice course

The course and staff were excellent. I wish the club house was available to grab a drink and hotdog after the turn. The course also needs restrooms on the course.

Great Course, but can be difficult, pick the right tees

And buy a yardage book if they have one. This course would be much more playable if it had GPS, but it does not. I have played here a few times and still struggled to know exactly where to hit the ball. I hit it exactly has I wanted and where I wanted only to find it in trouble.

Fortunately we paired up with another twosome part way through the round and they were very helpful.

Great condition and perfect weather made for a great time. I will be back.

5 stars

If you can find a "hot deal" on golf now, this is definitely the best course in the area.

More target golf holes than links golf holes

Difficult but fair course. Must hit fairways to score well here. The rough is basically half-stroke penalty. Lots of water hazards, especially on par 3s. No easy up & downs if you miss the greens, very severe bunkering. Greens were not nearly as difficult as I was expecting, but still pretty soft and not firm and fast. Will play again in Fall when The Bear fully awakened from hibernation.

Great early season golf!

Great early season golf! Paired up with a tremendous young golfer from Traverse City and a retired fellow from Chicago. My wife and I had a great afternoon of TC golf. Our only complaint was no refreshments at the turn. The bar was closed and we were told to go to the towers, where we couldn’t drive our cart. A little coordination between the pro shop and the bar would have easily resolved this problem! But, overall a Tremendous afternoon. And the Wolverine was in spectacular condition for April!!

Excellent Early Season Golf

Course is in great shape for this early in the season! Greens are in good condition, slow roll to be expected. Starter was super guy and pro shop staff were terrific, but couldn’t get a pop or beer at the turn at 5:30, fellow at the bar said we had to go to the towers for beverages. No time for that, and carts can’t go there! All in all, everything else was terrific and were paired with a tremendous young golfer (and super young man) from TC and a Chicago transplant. A truly enjoyable round!

The Bear is awesome!

I live near the Bear course, but had never played it before. I always thought it was too expensive. Then I got a deal on tee off .com and went to play with a friend. It’s a great course. Very fun to play. Challenging but not intimidating.

Great course if you get a deal on golfnow

It's not worth the $150 they charge during peak times, but $75 in the fall on golfnow is great. Definitely a course you should try to play when you're in the area.

Most people don’t play this because there are 2 other courses to play there the bear and the wolverine I think this one is just as hard as the bear especially the first 6 holes

Spruce course grand traverse resort

Enjoyed playing the course, staff was friendly, course was in decent condition. Had a little bad luck, as course wasn't too busy, but we had a very slow foursome in front of us. There was nobody in front of them but they didn't et us play through. We would have hopped in front of them but there were groups behind us so we would have missed a few holes. There wasn't a ranger to speed them up,, so we had a very slow round. Other than that enjoyed the day. Clubhouse great place to relax and have a bite to eat
