Beautiful course!
What a great course! Elevation changes, excellent greens, some visually challenging holes. Very scenic.
Never disappointed
It’s been over a year since I played RB Jackson but I’d play it every week if I could. There were 12 in our group and no one voiced any disappointments. Challenging but fair layout, great shape for winter play, friendly staff. 7 of us ate in the restaurant, very good. Highly recommend this course.
The Poor man’s course that is not up to the hype
Let me start by saying we played this course after a couple of days of rain so the ground was a little soggy. The layout is good and there are three stunning holes. However, the 7th has some sewage problem and the smell was horrific to say the least, a few of the greens were pretty terrible condition considering the reputation. It’s not a course I would rush back to, especially since the Jones course is used to hype up the Jackson, beware that this is the public ‘poor man’ course.
Love this course
Great course. Amazing carts with covers for a chilly day. Played alone and got done in under 4 hours.
Rock barn
Well this course is usually pretty good and worthy of 5 stars. How someone can give this 5 stars right now obviously doesn't play much. The course was 3 and half stars. Fairways and bunkers were great. But the greens were ridiculous. The worst I've ever seen them. 9 is almost completely gone...dead spots everywhere and they charge almost $50 to play there with greens like that I would be ticked. Would I play again...not this year unless it's in call when maybe greens come back in.
Gotta play this place
I haven't reviewed this place in a while, but it is still my number one place to play. Get the twilight rate. They've went up in price since they've become mostly private. They have two courses, the Jones course is private.
Best conditions, great carts, great clubhouse. Only place I'd consistently pay $3 for a hot dog because they are that good. $8 for the salad/soup bar, but it's worth it.
Now driving range balls are included so you could spend whatever time you want before and after your round practicing if you wish.
As with all Tom Jackson designs, as long as you can drive it 250 yards you're going to have a Pitching Wedge or less into the green. No big draws or fades are needed. Some holes look like you need to...but you don't Every shot is straight.
If you in the area you have to play this course.
First Class Facility
What a fantastic place to play golf. Everyone on staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Range and putting green were in excellent shape, and the course was phenomenal. Worth every bit of the hour+ drive from Asheville. Top-notch!
Worth every penny of a hot deal
This is one of the few courses worth driving out of your way to get to with a hot deal. This course is manicured like a PGA course. Layout is such that if you can drive it 250 yards you'll only have a wedge left. Can't miss this course. You've got to play it to believe it.
Way, Way OVERPRICED!
One of two courses, with this being the cheaper of the two and the latter the one that hosted a Champions Tour event for many years is now only available to members which is fine. This facility has all the amenities including a SPA that is second to none in the area. The Jackson course is always in excellent shape and is playable by all. It has wide fairways, large well kept greens with raked bunkers. The problem is the price of 65 bucks in the A.M followed by 45 twilight rate after two and this being late March and early April prices. I agree this is a nice facility but not that nice. There are MANY courses within driving distance that are just as nice and much cheaper. I guess they don't need the money or they just don't cater to the middle class. If this is the case then go completely private and quit trying to gouge the average guy. First rate practice green with bunkers for sand shots., a nice range with large putting green which you are GOING TO PAY FOR when you book your 65 dollar round!
A Great Day
The weather was wonderful, the two golfers with whom I played (both booked on GolfNow) were very enjoyable companions, and the course was a good and fair challenge. The whole experience represented excellent value for the price, and I look forward to the opportunity to do it again.
A gem at any time of year
I have played Rock Barn several times and have not been disappointed. Somehow, I have managed to play this track during the off season each time when the fairways are dormant and have missed out on the greenery but it is always worth the drive. At almost 7200 yards from the back tees with ample elevation changes, this is all you want...and then some. The Greater Hickory Classic has been played here on the Senior Tour since 2002 and the pros like the place! I concur! The Jones course is a fun, well designed 18 holes that makes you want to play more. Even in the off season, the place is well manicured and the greens are well maintained. Put this one on your to do list and make a tee time! You can then tell your friends that you played a GREAT layout that even makes some of the senior tour players shake their heads in dismay at times. You won't be disappointed.
Not the Jones course, but very similar
Unfortunately the "Jones" course is no longer availability to the public. Fortunately the "Jackson" course is a great alternative. Though shorter than Jones, it embodies a lot of the qualities of its private partner. The layout is spectacular and the elevation changes dramatic. Fairways, tees and greens all in great shape, with the exception of a couple of greens on the back nine, that looked like they had disease damage. Even these greens were very playable. Staff was friendly and clubhouse and pro shop very good. Pace of play was very good, 4:15. Plus the price on Golf Now was fantastic. This has become one of my favorite courses in the Charlotte area. A little more than hour drive, but worth your time and travel. I strongly recommend this course.
Great January round
First time playing Rock Barn, we played the Jackson course and it was in very good condition for this time of year. The greens were excellent, rolled true and were very consistent. Looking forward to playing again.
Challenging but fair layout
Fairly challenging course. Will be easier the next visit. Wonderfully manicured with excellent greens. Staff makes you feel at home and are very accommodating.
Looking forward to my next round here!!!
First Time Visit
Played the Jackson course on a day in the 50's after the bermuda was dormant. Course in good shape and clearly had good grass coverage on the fairways. Wished they were over-seeded with Rye. Greens were FAST! Nearly Tour fast. A couple of greens were showing stress, but most were in good condition. Course knowledge would be very helpful for some tee shots, either for direction or carry required. Played the blue tees and the carries over water on some holes means carry an extra sleeve of balls. Traps had not been raked and the golfers didn't rake them either. 15 is steeply downhill with water at end of fairway. 250 yd. is safe including runout. Hybrid or 3 wood off tee depending on your game.
Great Course
While there were a few greens that had bad areas due to the weather conditions, the course condition and layout were really good. The friendless of Staff was exceptional. The course is a challenge, (played from Member Tees) it is fair especially if played befor; can't wait to play again!
Challenging but fair!!
This is the second time playing his course. It was even better than the first time. The staff was very accommodating and allowing us to tee off an hour earlier. The food is also great in the grill!!
