Rock Barn Golf and Spa - Jackson Course
About
Rock Barn Golf & Spa offers two championship courses, one designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and the other by Tom Jackson. Nestled within the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the golf courses are provided with swiftly moving brooks and sparkling lakes that accent the wooded hills and lush, grassy meadows. The Jackson Course tumbles across picturesque valleys, offering both dramatic elevation changes and beautiful scenery. The layout is shorter and less demanding than the Jones Course but it is a challenge nonetheless. The undulating terrain demands accuracy and perfect ball placement. Fast greens are balanced by generous fairways. Water hazards also come into play. The course starts out intimidatingly with a narrow, uphill par 5 but the rest of the course is not quite as daunting.

Really good
Played at Rock Barn for the 2nd time ever with a friend who really wanted to go. I love the layout. It is alot of fun and challenging without being overly tight. There is alot of sand around the greens and you have to hit good golf shots. The greens were in really good shape. WAY better condition than they were at the end of last July when I came for the 1st time. Bunkers were full of soft sand. Almost too much sand for me. I wonder if they just added a bunch of sand for the season? Anyway, fairways and tees and rough were just starting to green up and were hit and miss. I like the course and the layout. But it now costs $90 on the weekends which is a little steep for me (that does include range balls though). But as a splurge trip once a year or so,def worth it.
1 is a short par 5. Hit your tee shot over a waste/canyon area, then up a steep incline in the fairway.
2 is a short uphill par 4.
3 is a medium length par 3. You cannot go long or left.
4 is a shorter uphill blind par 4, but its really open and you have alot of room.
5 is a longer par 4 with a blind tee shot and down hill approach
6 is a downhill par 3. Water short and right, big bank and bunkers left.
7 is a short par 4 where you tee off up above the fairway.
8 is a short dogleg right par 5, approach plays uphill again.
9 is a beautiful par 3. Steep drop from the tee to the green. Plays almost 20 yards shorter than the distance.
10 is a unique par 5. Dogleg left around a large pond. Downhill tee shot before the almost 90 degree dogleg.
11 is a shorter uphill par 4
12 is a longer downhill par 4. Pretty open but the green is well guarded.
13 is a short par 3 with all carry over a smaller pond.
14 is a longer par 4, one of the tighter feeling holes on the course.
15 is a beautiful hole. Downhill tee short with less than driver to the flat area. Then all carry over water approach to a large peninsula green.
16 is a short uphill par 3, all carry over a small pond.
17 is a shorter par 5, downhill approach, one of the easier holes on the back.
18 is a par 4, plays steeply uphill and is well bunkered.
Most fun
The Jackson course at Rock Barn is the most fun golf course I’ve ever played. Lots of elevation changes super small and wickedly fast greens. Play it……..you won’t regret it
Very nice course
The Jackson course is one of two courses, the other being the Jones Course, at the Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Conover NC. The Jackson is a fair course that can present many holes where birdies are feasible but the course isn’t a chip shot either. There are holes that can jump up and bite you on the butt if you get careless. The Jones course hosted the Hickory Kia Classic a number of years ago for the Champions tour. About 10 plus years ago there was a severe storm that devastated some holes on the Jones Course that have since been totally reconstructed. But at the time they were able to continue hosting the Champions tour by making a hybrid course layout consisting of holes from both courses. It’s pretty cool to actually play holes that the tour boys have played! The practice facility is great and included in the price. It has a full range, a large practice putting green and a practice green for chipping and bunker shots. There’s a new fleet of carts with GPS to the flags and charging capabilities with usb ports. Overall I would recommend this course for an enjoyable round with friends.
Course conditions were good for late summer play
We love the layout of the Jackson course. Its layout is good and plenty of challenges along the way. Wide fairways and nice putting on the greens. It’s our favorite course when we can afford it. We’re Senior husband and wife golfers who have to find good deals to play there at their rates. Using Golf Now helps.
Great golf course!
Very nice course, challenging, beautiful. Staff was very friendly
All great except for the greens
Beautiful layout, friendly staff and the course layout was great and challenging. The problem was the greens. There was an apparent fungus on most of them that was unsightly and made some putts very bumpy and irregular. When they get that figured out it is a place I would definitely go back to. Bonus was range balls were included with the round
Amazing course
I was traveling for work and found a hot deal for this course and took it. Out of all the courses I’ve played on the road this has to be the best one. Staff was extremely nice and helpful, nice driving range, great course layout (Jackson) There were a couple greens that had some dead spots but I was thoroughly impressed with the track. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone around this area. I will absolutely play here again when I’m nearby. 10/10
Fun layout
First time playing the Jackson course. The course was on the shorter side but that didn’t make it easy. A lot of tricky tee shots and elevation change made it a fun challenge. Course conditions were good. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Cart girl came by frequently. Food at the turn was good. Easily a top 6 turkey sandwich I’ve had. Overall a good day on the course and worth the money.
Back 9 - Awesome
Tale of two courses. Back nine is fantastic. Course needs work. Bunkers were lacking sand in spots and other players didn’t take care of them. Divots unrepaired, fairway divots everywhere, and bunkers need work. Cool spot and staff was great.
Cart GPS pain in a$&$s
Very nice course, staff was nice, BUT the GPS nagging at me for 18 holes was horrible. At one point it locked up my cart automatically and my cart slid sideways down a hill, I was concerned it might topple over. It stayed locked for about 10 minutes. Not to mention the cart stopping about a dozen other times and needing to go backwards. There’s no indicators on the course to know when this will happen. Idiotic implementation of the current technology.
8/19/25 Greens a bit tattered
I have played this a lot. It’s a go to course. I love the set up, staff, and availability. For some reason greens are a little beat up in the Jackson course right now. Could be a bad mower knicking it up or a disease. Either way some bare spots on edges
Other than that really enjoyed the round.

GPS screen on each cart clearly shows restricted areas where carts will lock up. Most notably near the greens and tees.
Any experienced Golfer would realize these Cart stop because you have entered a restricted area! In fact, the display screen shows you in detail where these restricted areas are, as well as the exact current location of your cart! All you have to do is put the cart in reverse and back-out of the restricted area!
