Rock Barn Golf and Spa - Jackson Course
About
Rock Barn Golf & Spa offers two championship courses, one designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and the other by Tom Jackson. Nestled within the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the golf courses are provided with swiftly moving brooks and sparkling lakes that accent the wooded hills and lush, grassy meadows. The Jackson Course tumbles across picturesque valleys, offering both dramatic elevation changes and beautiful scenery. The layout is shorter and less demanding than the Jones Course but it is a challenge nonetheless. The undulating terrain demands accuracy and perfect ball placement. Fast greens are balanced by generous fairways. Water hazards also come into play. The course starts out intimidatingly with a narrow, uphill par 5 but the rest of the course is not quite as daunting.

Cart GPS can be frustrating & Hole placement
Really enjoy playing at RB, top notch outfit and The Staff are surprisingly laid back for a high-end golf club.
If I had to find any negatives it would be Cart GPS issues and Hole/Cup placements at times. Often the Carts will shut down even though your on the paved path, and not exceeding any speed limits. Happens often on Holes 15 & hole 7 and occasionally in a few other spots. No. Big deal, just aggravating.
Also the course staff sometimes place Cups on slopes.. have had a few putts that were struck say 1' or less short of the cup come back towards me like 6 to 8 ft. This happens generally on holes 16, 18, 11 & 13. Again not a big deal but more thought might needs to be exerted when placing these especially when they are dry & rolling fast.
All in all RB is still a top notch golf club.
Puzzling
Play here regularly, however today the greens (including practice green) were only 75% mown, only the center section of the greens had been mown, The remaining portions were very shaggy and the mowing patterns had no border and were very inconsistent. . Could possibly be due to the coming heat wave, not sure, however they should offer a Discounted Rate when they do this. It's was frustrating to play on such.
Interesting course but not in great shape
Some tee boxes are absolutely horrible and the green greenside bunkers were not well maintained.
Nice Layout
Fun course to play.
Excellence as usual
Best course in the area. Condition and layout. Shorter, quicker course that is matinee as well as any signature course you're going to play on. This place is by far my favorite and a must play if you're in the area.
Great Day of Golf
Virtually no one on the course. We had it to ourselves. Top-notch conditions and greens were almost perfect. Really enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this course.
Rock barn Jackson
Slowest round of golf I’ve ever played.
Way too overpriced for the conditions even though conditions aren’t bad.
Really fun play
Rock Barn Jackson Course is a really fun play. Wide variety of shots. Excellent staff. And course was in really good shape. Greens were superb. Smooth and a really nice quick pace. It’s a bit expensive. But if you go after 2 PM and get the afternoon rate of $75 it’s prob worth it.
Nice Golf Club, but overpriced.
Maintenance staff changes have greatly improved the Jackson Course conditions this year. Lots of course improvements this spring. My only issue with RB is that it's over-priced. $75 is a bit much given other quality courses in the area are far less expensive.
Always incredible
The course is always in excellent condition. One of the best courses in the Charlotte area.
Best kept course around
Great conditions for early summer golf here in the Carolinas. Hole 1 is a smack in the face right off the bat to make sure you brought your A game and a few extra balls. Good shots are rewarded highly. Errant shots are greatly penalized. Some shot par 4 with chances to go for the green, miss and you'll find soft sandy bunkers to play out to salvage par.
The cleanup pass around the edge of the greens is not being skipped due to a lack of maintenance; it is actually part of a proper agronomic management program. The USGA recommends limiting how frequently this area is mowed because the repeated turning, traffic, and cutting pressure from the mower can create additional stress on the turf. Mowing that same outside ring every day can eventually weaken the perimeter, especially during periods of heat stress. This is standard practice at most places.
Following proper maintenance practices, the cleanup pass is typically rotated and performed only a few times per week to allow the turf time to recover while still maintaining quality putting surfaces. Per USGA recommendations, leaving that small outside ring unmowed on certain days has little to no impact on putting conditions or the overall playability of the greens.
