Beautiful course in good condition
had a great day - not many on the course so able to play all 36 holes (Jackson course and Jones course) - staff very friendly and helpful - can see why this course is a stop on the Senior PGA tour
Great layout with plenty of "teeth"
I'll preface this review by saying this was my first time playing the Rock Barn Jones course. The staff was great, starting me (a single) on 4 to avoid getting trapped behind a large group of members teeing off on 1 just before my time. The layout requires absolute concentration on most any shot. The contours of the fairways must be used to keep the ball in play and at times away from hazards (hole 16 being a great example). With that said a yardage book is a must for this course. The combination of blind tee shots, severe downhill landing areas, and tee shots that point you in many cases toward danger (see the long par 3 3rd) a golfer playing the Jones Course at Rock Barn for the first time can easily get into trouble. For me I started to play safe after smoking a drive up the right on 6. According to the line you can see from the tee my drive, a slight draw up the right, should have been fine but a lateral hazard actually juts out further than can be seen from the tee. Had a yardage book been provided I probably would have hit 3 wood and hit a mid iron in rather than trying to bomb it with trouble on the right and a short porch left. As for course conditions the waterfall and surrounding foliage are beautiful back drops but after a tough winter many of the fairways are under repair due to winter kill. While the course is still totally playable expect a few hard bounces and big hops. The greens were immaculate and IMO were just on the edge of being considered "glassy" making putting a challenge but with a chance for a mid handicapper to make some putts. Also the little homage to Augusta on 16 and 17 is a cool and well done touch. Great course overall.
Beautiful Course
Staff was very friendly and provide a very relaxed experience. The course is truly stunning. They do have some issues with some significant dead spots in the fairways. Greens were in excellent shape, just a bit and I do mean just a bit slower than I anticipated. I will make the long drive again soon based off of this experience.
Shot Makers Course
A fun course to stay within yourself and see how good you really are at the game we love. Left the driver in the bag most of the round, yes I played it forward at the white tee's, I like to see the course the first time through. It became a shot makers course. Elevated tee to the end of the fairway, next shot over the water to a layup, pitching wedge in to the left pin. Beautiful scenery, a waterfall becomes a crossroads area shared with at least four holes. Sometimes I found the signage to be lacking, "which way to the next hole?" Course conditions were great, clean, well kept. Greens were in great shape. All in all a very nice course to enjoy.
Great Course
A couple of minor issues in the fairway, but an amazing layout. I will be back!!
Jones course - still a little winter kill but otherwise great
great course. Greens were near championship condition. Bunkers smooth and consistent. Some remaining winter kill in the fairways but much better Han many other Nc courses these days. Definite one I would repeat.
Rock Barn Jones
Great course with natural setting. Plays long from the blue tees at 6500+ yards, with some challenging par 4s. Bent grass greens are fantastic.
Food in the clubhouse restaurant was very good too.
Nice course but fairways need word
First time playing the course it a great layout that makes you think about your shots. I am not sure if the sell yardage books in the club house but if they do I will be picking one up next time. The signage could be better need to add some arrow to help navigate around. The fairways need some work but the greens were near prefect. The pace of play was great never was had to wait and was never pushed.
Fun lay out
Good greens , collars and fairways have lots of winter kill
Course conditions have been better
Overall good experience, there were places in the fairway there was no grass and it was just dead grass. I don't know what this from and I have played this course when it was in much better shape. The greens were great!
Picked a bad day to play...
...as they were aerating 9 of the greens. So we played 9 on Jones, 9 on Jackson. Jones course is beautiful, but cold winter/early spring and recent lack of water have taken a toll on the fairways. Many patches where the Bermuda has yet to respond. Greens on Jackson course we're much better, but a couple of the holes were "goofy" golf. Hope to return to Jones course under better conditions. Staff was VERY accommodating and nice, making the experience that much better.
Could Be MUCH Better
Its unfortunate that whoever takes care of this course evidently has know idea what they are doing..
You can easily see that this at one time this was a spectacular course.. For being the prime part of the season you would not have expected to have completely burnt up fairways..
Grass was completely dead in major sections of the fairways.
The bunkers looked like they haven't been raked in a year and all of the small details were left uncut.
Lies
The pro on the phone lied and said the course was in good shape.... Not the case. Fairways were gone, hitting second shots from dirt was not what I expected. Panted here before multiple times and loved it but right now it's in worst condition possible. Very upsetting that the staff would day it's a 7/10 when it's a 2/10. When it's in shape awesome.......right now..... Terrible
Nice course, but could have been nicer
This is a nice course. The layout was challenging, but it was not too difficult. It has a lot of good architectural features. The greens were in very good shape. The only thing is that fairways could have been in better shape. It was not terrible, but there were several bare spots that should be fixed.
this is a thinking mans course
I've played this course 2 times last fall and this past Saturday. This is the type of course where you need some experience , its not overly long but with the strategic bunkers and water ball placement is essential. The course is fun to play,it was a little browned due to lack of rain but the greens were in great shape
Wow
Awesome golf course! Meant to be enjoyed by better players. This is a very challenging track and shot placement is required on every shot. Bring your "A" game and you will love this course.
Mixed Bag
I was disappointed in the condition of the course. Lots of hard-pan fairways and bunkers ranged from good to terrible. Greens were in good shape. Starter ignored my group and I had to ask how to get to the Jones course. He was pre-occupied with the locals or members. Definitely a challenging course. Would like to play it again when conditions improve. Food was good, but service in the restaurant was not.
Nice Course
We played the Jones course and it was in good shape for an early season round. The greens had recently been punched and the Bermuda is still dormant. But, the course will play much tougher when the Bermuda rough has come in. Once the greens heal they will be faster and will roll much truer. The cost through GolfNow was reasonable for the course this time of year, but the normal cost would have been too much for the greens condition. Overall, it's a very nice course especially during peak season.
An Enjoyable course
The course was in the process of aeration so the greens were sanded, only means the course will be better in the future. A solid shot makers course with hole #1 being a signature uphill dog leg. Enjoyed the adventure.
This course has plenty of hazzards. Be prepared!
Really enjoyed the Jackson at RB. Plenty of hazards to
play. Bunkers were fluffy and very good shape. Water hazards are very demanding. Really enjoyed playing, and would/will recommend to my friends.
