Enjoyed
My wife & I always enjoy playing this course. With it's up and down layout it provides the challenge we like to play.
A very good challenge.
This course represents an excellent challenge to experienced golfers. Nestled among mature trees, narrow fairways, vertical approaches and intimidating water holes, it can wear you out. The thick rough and slow greens can take a toll on your scorecard..
Good course, Cheap food
The course was in pretty good condition. Greens were a little slow and the tee boxes a little dry. But overall pretty well (fairways were great). This is a pretty tough course, Very very tight. Pretty short course as well. The staff was very friendly and the food was really cheap. Hot dog and Gatorade for only 3.50. Overall great course for the price.
Awesome Layout
Great hidden gems in a state park. Awesome challenging layouts. Greens and fairways were in tip top shape and the staff was friendly personable and professional. Will definitely play again and hopefully better real soon
Nice Course
Nice course. Enjoyed views of Lake Thurmond. Several challenging holes with tighter tee shot landing areas - at least for a hacker like me. I played from the white tees, but probably should have played from the gold tees. Favorite hole was #16, a par 5 with approach shot over water to green. Friendly staff. Will certainly try to play the course a second time.
Great value
Nice hidden gem on Lake Thurmond. Great layout. Staff is always courteous and friendly. Well worth one’s drive to come out and play this course. You won’t be disappointed.
Hickory Knob
The course is in great shape. It is like playing on a private country club because so few people are playing during these warm days.
Great value and very relaxing round
The course is in great shape and was not crowded at all. Very nice state park course!
Great Shape, Slow Greens
Had 11am tee time and course wasn't very busy. Fairways were almost flawless. Greens were in great shape overall but very slow. A couple of them had some thin areas on them but nothing really bad. As we played, the greenskeepers were lightly sanding and verti-cutting the greens, however there was no negative effect on the greens. They were rolling just as smooth and true as the ones that hadn't been done yet. Bunkers were okay but could use a little TLC. Overall, this course should be immaculate in short order.
Lakeside Beauty
The best course for the money I’ve played in the Augusta area. Only draw back was cart path only rule in effect, but it’s due to course getting so much rain lately. Was beautiful from tee to green. Greens were slow, probably rain related. Better than the burnt up greens I’ve seen elsewhere for sure. If you don’t mind the drive, it’s a great place to play. Will go back soon.
Great course at a great price
Hickory Knob golf course is an excellent value for the price. The course is well kept, long & challenging enough for a scratch player yet a high handi capper can enjoy it too.
Little gem
Just a fine course hidden in South Carolina . We RV and golf perfect combo for us
Great course
The course is in excellent shape. They fixed the bumpy cart paths. This is a great little gem of a golf course.
Hot, slow day
I understand as a single player, pace may be slow but today was very slow. Partly due to cart path only, which is understandable due to the amount of rain that we have had the last 2 weeks, but also with several slow groups. One group of 4 tee’d off on 1 and two of them went back to their car afterwards to get something which slowed the twosome in front of me. Eventually they let the twosome and myself play thru but we caught up with a group of ladies on the 10th tee that were on the 5th green when I approached the 2nd green. At that point we were waiting on almost every shot which made for a 5 hour and 15 minute round. Greens were still a little bumpy and traps were not racked in the morning prior to play which made some of them very hard packed.
Greens Still Recovering From Aeration
Greens are playable but still have sand (light) and holes from aeration. Should be fully recovered in a couple of weeks. Fairways are beginning to green up but are still somewhat thin. Bunkers were fine. The lake level was at full pool +, so it was very scenic. Overall, still enjoyed the course, but it should be in great shape in a couple of weeks.
Aeration on the greens
Course was in good shape but the greens looked as if they were being aerated and were very bumpy. I got there early and was able to tee off alone and I was done very quickly.
A good challenge
This was the second time playing this course, but that didn’t make it easier or less fun. Between the hills, water and generous amount of sand traps, be prepared for a challenge. But also a good time. Who wants boring golf? They work hard to keep the course in good shape despite what Mother Nature does. The staff are very friendly and will help if you but ask. You can get some food in the pro shop and beer to take on the course with you. Don’t turn down a chance to play here.
