Hickory Knob Golf Course

Was expecting more after course closed all year for rehabilitation, but still in best shape it's been in years. Greens were filled in nice, but on the slow side. Fairways the best I've ever seen them, nice & fluffy, and tee boxes were level & grassed in nicely. Bunkers finally have sand, but not shaped in to edges & full of footprints & "piles". Many were just like walking on a beach. Was shocked that all the washed out areas over the years hadn't been filled in & leveled off & seeded. Now would have been a good time to get all of those areas turfed backed in. The actual part of course that you play was in great shape....just disappointed that they didn't make the effort to get the edges of the course back in a more maintained condition. The wooded areas between holes are still fiull of dead trees, branches, debris, etc. Would have thought being closed would be a good time to "clean up" those areas & give the course a more upscale vibe. Still one of the toughest & nice layouts out there....I guess the SC State Park System doesn't care about making their courses a "destination" type experience. They could learn from how GA runs their State Park courses!!. Still a great course at a great price point....just was expecting more!! Too bad....this could be one of the top 100 courses in the country if they just dialed it in some with a little TLC around the edges. Also, for some reason, they no longer sell beer at the course....seems like alot of revenue lost there to help generate money to better maintain the course!!

First time I've played since they reopened this week. The bunkers are incredibly soft. The sand was softer than sugar. It was a challenge getting out of the bunkers with the new sand but a welcome upgrade. The new greens were lightning fast but accessible. The course layout is challenging as always. I don't believe there was any change there. I wish the carts were upgraded as the brake was aggravating to get to catch to park the cart. The cart path could use updates too. Overall though I really enjoyable course with great views and staff.

First time playing here in nearly a year because of course conditions. Finally came back and it was worse. I understand what they're trying to do. Fix there bunkers. But, all at once?! I hope they won't jack up their prices for Masters week if conditions haven't improved by then. Going to be a LOT of irate golfers.

I’ve been playing this course for years and never had an experience like this. Our tee time was at 3:00 PM and our cart died on hole 4, which caused a 30-minute delay while we waited for a replacement. No one informed us beforehand that carts had to be brought in by 5:30 PM. We made it to hole 10 and were told we had to stop playing, but the pro shop refused to give a rain check, saying “we have to do what’s best for the course.” Most staff were friendly, but the main person in the pro shop was rude and dismissive. Very disappointing considering I’ve been coming here for years.

First time at this course. All in all, I was happy with the course. No GPS on the cart but they were adequate. The conditions were sopping wet in place. Nice drives would plug in the mud at times but I believe in warmer weather the course will be very nice. The sand traps were dug out to the mud but didn't find the traps much but found the dug out sand around the greens a time or two. The pace was good early until we caught up with a group of drunks that were dancing more than playing. Also they were playing as a 5 some so that slowed them even more. We never saw a ranger except when we teed off. The staff was very nice though. The course layout was challenging but not ridiculously difficult. A few greens had some dead areas but didn't interfere with my putts fortunately. I can play 18 in 3.5 hrs but the slowplay took over 5 hours which was unnecessary with how unoccupied the course was.

Played in December. Lake is down. Would be a very scenic course in Spring or Summer. Back nine is better than the front. We will be back

Glad we played the course, disappointing in the condition of the course. Bunkers unplayable and soggy. But fairways were great. But I thought the course was going to be amazing and high end, it was not.

Sand traps are in really bad shape. Tee boxes are level, but hit or miss on condition. Greens are very sandy and speed varies from green to green. They rolled smooth, but speed varies based on amount of sand, grass. Fairways and rough were excellent. Still a lot of downed trees in the woods. Played in just over 2 hours. Only 8 cars in the parking lot at 2:30.

My wife and I wanted to play a course near us that we Haven’t played so we chose Hickory knob based on others reviews. First, the staff in the pro shop was great. Very friendly and hospitable. After that, it went downhill fast. The condition of the driving range was 2/10. The practice green 3/10. The carts old and don’t appear to be very well maintained. (Check to make sure your parking brake works before going out). The layout of the course is challenging. The tee boxes and Greens are terrible. I would have rather putted on freshly punched and sanded greens.

They would have been smoother and faster. The only positive was the senior rate was only $35.

I drove an hour and half to play this course after a friend said it was very nice. When I arrived I made my way over to the pro shop to pay. That portion of the course was courteous, but what followed was terrible. I bought a small bucket for the range and could not believe the condition of the range. Total range area was maybe ten yards wide with terrible grass holes and sand everywhere. I made my way up to the practice putting green only to find out it was in awful shape as was the range. I was so bummed out on the condition of the course that I drove my golf cart to my truck and drove home. I didn't try and see if I could get my green fee returned, I didn't care I just wanted to leave. I would never have anyone I know who enjoy golf to return to this course EVER. It would require a major overhaul to even pass as a mediocre city municipal course. Good luck folks I hope you can keep this course open for business with the terrible conditions.

It was a pretty good round of golf. Pretty hot weather which I like. The pace of play was slower just because I was playing with a group of guys and I was the odd man out. Staff was very friendly, course was in good condition from previous times I’ve played this course. I would play more if it was closer to this course.
