Wow, I played on a warm (but windy) Nov day, and was highly impressed by this course. Conditions were amazing. And the course has some nice challenges (fairways that roll left or right, elevation changes just to name a few).
Greens were receptive, but fast. They also rolled accurate and consistent.
The course is out there a ways, but worth the drive if you ask me. I can't wait to go play again in season and see how it is.
Overbooked
I drove an hour and a half to play here. Booked the round on GolfNow days in advance. I show up and the starter doesn’t even have me on the tee sheet. He was originally gonna send me out after another solo, which made zero sense. So I paired up w the other single and it was pretty clear from the pac dog play that they overbooked. 5 and a half hour round and I was on top of the people in front of me. Beautiful course but hard to play good golf when you’re sitting there waiting on every single hole.
It is a beautiful layout in a unique setting.
All the greens had not recovered from aeration but he biggest problem is nearly all sand traps lack sand. The sand is heavily peppered with gravel and stones. One trap contained a lot of mud.
October Golf
Everything was very enjoyable except for pace. Please use marshals to move people along. Very hard to be in back of two novice golfers who spend 10 minutes looking for lost balls on most every hole
Great day golfing except a lot of slow play in front of me including a single. There is no excuse for a single player holding anyone up. Course was in great shape except for all the leaves but this time of year that is common. Staff is always friendly.
Awesome course. Wonderful shape. Would play it again in a heartbeat. Too bad I live 4 hours away.
CPO
Course is long and on our day, it was cart path only. Marshall said he had suggested it not be, to no avail. We live in NC and have played golf in all 50 states. Most of the holes were dry enough to drive on. Also as a twosome and as expected, we waited on several holes. Course was in good shape. Rough was long and challenging. Price was a little high for a state park course.
Still a Favorite!
Ok, so some sand traps had sparse sand and the greens on the day I played had not been rolled so they were very slow—but great shape.
You have to love the big open fairways, mountains all around you, friendly staff and very reasonable green fees. It’s 90 minutes from my house but we continue to love it! A beautiful drive and the Shawnee Market on the way has the best pies on earth so that’s always a must stop!!
Beautiful course
Very fair layout. The greens were recently aerated, so a little bumpy, but overall, the course was in excellent shape.
Very Nice, But Slow
The people working there were absolutely fabulous. The course layout is really nice, the biggest complaint is that the sand traps were literally rock traps. There were definitely more rocks and pebbles than sand. Greens were pretty slow compared to most courses I have played.
WV State Park Golf!
Great place to play! Staff is top notch, friendly, the best! Greens are in good shape! Fairways are nice but spotty in places. Hard to find a good "play it as it lies" lie in the rough. But this is not a problem if you hit the fairway. The course has LOTS of sand traps, at driving distances on maybe every hole. Although they are less than sandy on most of the course. Highly recommended. WV State Park golf at its best! And don't forget to take a side trip over to Berkley Springs!
