Great-!!!
Excellent conditions of the course. Staff followed new COVID-19 protocols.
Pace of play is 100% better because everyone goes to their ball. Raised cups in green are the new trend but it is difficult to accept.
Recommended-!!!
Course is getting better after all the rain
Course is getting better after all the rain that PR had been having. 90 degree cart rule required on only a few holes. Green continue to get better
Good overall
Good staff. 90 degree rule in place due to recent rain. All things considered greens are in reasonably shape. Plan on lift clean and place. Plan on standing water in fairways in some locations
Love the River
I am a resident/member of Rio Mar, so play both courses often. But the River is by far my favorite. It pushes up to the base of El Yunque rainforest, and the Mameyes River winds throughout the course. Except for the first few holes, there are no homes on the course, which makes it very secluded and private. Pace of play very good, as all the tourists want to play the Ocean Course, not knowing this is the real gem of the two. Very challenging, yet 3 of the Par 5's are reachable. Some very tough and long Par 4's. The new golf staff has done wonders with both courses, especially post-Maria (insurance helped with many renovations). They are now part of Troon Golf, which I know has high standards, and both courses are living up to it.
Nice layout; fair conditions
I enjoyed the layout, but I would rate the conditions as fair to average The course is maintained ok (maybe as good as it gets considering the environment) - but the greens, while true, were VERY slow. IMO not a great value compared to say a Poppy Ridge in Monterey. On the other hand, if you’re staying at the resort and don’t have many other convenient options it made for a pleasant round of golf.
Beautiful scenery all around
Mountain/Jungle views, beachfront holes, lakes, birds etc. Awesome golfing only 30 minutes from San Juan. Green and sandtrap conditions are excellent although it was raining, very wet and cart path only. Highly recommended.
Muddy fun
The ocean course is probably amazing during dry periods, But I wonder if the course is even irrigated properly. There was standing water in many locations and golf carts should not have been allowed to go onto the fairways even though there were many muddy golf tracks across what would have been beautifully maintained fairways.
I’d like to play this course again, but I couldn’t bring myself to pay for it unless I could see drier conditions. The golf ball would literally get plugged into the fairway from a good shot. The funny thing is the greens were fairly dry and rolled true. The tee boxes we also well maintained.
Also the golf carts don’t have GPS, and finding yardage markers is rather difficult. Of course you can use the 150 markers and if you have GPS on your watch or phone, or a rangefinder you’ll be fine..
Hoping this was only an isolated experience.
The golf now rate was fantastic, and the course is in great shape with a very nice layout
River course Rio Mar
Amazing views of El Yunque.
My wife and I enjoyed this course and played in just over 3 hours.
Good conditions throughout.
Golf
The course was beautiful, we were the only group on there so the pace of play was excellent. It was a challenging course. I would definitely recommend this course to everyone.
Very good experience.
we played the River Course on a Thursday afternoon and we darn near had the place all to ourselves. it took a couple of holes to get used to how to play your shots on this particular species of grass; unlike anything we've played on before. the course was a little bit dry certainly not unreasonable. the course layout was beautiful and the scenery was great throughout the course of our round. the bunkers needed more sand. the saying that was there was much too hard and not fluffy whatsoever. the course was pretty challenging however it was also fairly short so if you hit some good shots, especially off the tee, your approach shots onto the green were very makable. overall, I would give it a good rating and I will definitely come back again.
A Fun Layout
While there is only one hole along the ocean the ocean course is fair, picturesque and the greens were very true. Enjoyed the different shore birds along the track Also at least 5 large iguanas who seemed as curious as we were. They seemed to be scoring better, however.
Amazing golf courses Río Mar. Wyndham Resorrt
Solid tropical golf experience
The George Fazio-design Ocean Course has at least a couple of things going for it. It's a very playable layout at a terrific resort, and it has views of the Caribbean Sea. The layout and holes won't blow you away, but there's nothing unenjoyable about this experience.
It has also recovered nicely from Hurricane Maria. After undergoing a bunker renovation, it looks better than ever. There's also talk that it may get new greens, which would really elevate the course's status.
And if you're playing here, be sure to have lunch at the new Roots Coastal Kitchen at the Wyndham Rio Mar Resort next door, which has a variety of fresh Caribbean dishes, pizzas, desserts and drinks you won't likely forget.
Nice!!!
The course conditions and layout is very nice... Most of the staff need to improve their people’s skills
River Course
Both courses are immaculate and well maintained. Breath taking views surround you on the River course as it’s secluded from the Rio Mar Villas. It’s challenging, beautiful and the course staff is very friendly. A+ experience. If I had to choose between the River and the Ocean I would choose the River every time due to the challenges and the seclusion of the course.
Fun course with an Awesome 16th hole by the Ocean
The staff was very friendly and happy to have me there at their course.
The course is in decent shape, except the bunkers are bad. The bunkers are being redone so right now they are bad, but when they are completed they will be very nice. The layout is fun and somewhat challenging. There is lots of water hazards. For paying $200 I expected the course to be much nicer and in much better condition, but the course went through a MAJOR hurricane less than 9 months ago, so I didn't expect too much as far as pristine course conditions.
The greens were a little shaggy and bumpy.
The highlight of the course is hole #16 which sits right next to the ocean (hence the name Ocean Course). The scenery and ocean were spectacular. The wind coming off the ocean make the long, par 3 hole very challenging.
I really enjoyed playing the course except for the bunkers. Hole #16 makes the entire round very worth while.
The clubhouse is closed due to renovation. The temporary clubhouse is a portable trailer.
As good as I remember it
I hadn't played the River Course in a couple of years, but have played it maybe a dozen times over the past 5-6 years.
The course conditions (with one caveat) were as good as they've been in the past, and by past I mean, pre-Hurricane Maria. The bunkers are currently being repaired. Some are ready for the sand, others are still being reconstructed or finishing having the drainage replaced. So, most bunkers will play as GUR. No biggie. I mean, Maria was just 4 months ago.
Tees, greens, fairways - the vast majority were in good to very good conditions. The greens rolled true (most of the time) and pretty quick most of the time as well.
The wind was up when we played, but the weather was warm, mix of sun and clouds. Just beautiful.
The staff at Rio Mar were as friendly and as helpful and as genuine as they've always been. It was great to see some familiar faces after having been away for a couple of years.
I can't make a value judgment for you the reader, but I have no problem playing this course and paying in the $60 range. You get the course, the cart, water bottles, complimentary assorted peanuts from the cart girl, and practice balls. And you'll see the cart girl, I think it was, we saw her six times during our round. Some places you're lucky if you see her twice.
I have no complaints about my experience at Rio Mar. I'll be back. (I live here, so that makes it easy!)
