Great scenery, nice course.
The course played well. It has some great scenery, so don't forget your camera. Overall had a great time playing the course, went on a weekday and wasn't crowded at all. I recommend this course if you get a chance to play there.
Disappointing
I arrived a day early, planned on hitting some balls at the range. Took the hotel shuttle and was informed the range was closed - no staff to run it that day. Next day I arrived at 9am for my 11am tee time - no one greeted me. Wanted to grab some breakfast at the restaurant, then hit balls. Was told the restaurant didn't open until 11, and the range was again closed; this time because of the rain the previous evening. Cart was at least 8 years old - cart path only restriction. Cannot believe they charge almost $200 for this course - I did get it at half price through GolfNow and STILL feel like I paid twice what it was worth. The ONE ocean hole is very pretty and the overall layout is decent. Condition was not what I expected from a high end resort course.
Mystery yardage
I made the mistake of paying full price, not really worth playing at the rack rate. Saving grace was they let my nine year old son play for free. Course was in marginal condition, definitely needs a refresh. We followed a charity tournament and they didn't rake traps. The easiest improvement they could make is to add yardage markers! Most holes only had 150 sticks so I was guessing for my approach shots the whole round.
The course is in a beautiful location; wonderful scenery abound. Could be a golf destination with some improvements.
Great at discount rate
Great value at the discount rate. Most courses in PC are way to overpriced. This course was very nice-well maintained and in overall beautiful shape. The signing was limited and without prior course knowledge a bit confusing. Play with a person who knows the course. Greens are not super fast.
Great Carribean golf experience
From start to finish, my experience was excellent. I booked on GolfNow for the Hot Rate and played 18 holes of speedy golf for well under a hundred bucks. Played the front 9 by myself (and about 50 iguanas... very cool) in about an hour. Joined up with a twosome on the back and still finished in 3 1/2 hours. Like others have mentioned, the "Ocean" course is a bit of a misnomer, but the par 3 along the beach is quite a hole 238 from the back tees. Beautiful!!! I look forward to more visits to Puerto Rico and I will surely be back to the Ocean Course at Rio Mar!
Nice for the money
Got golfnow deal for $32 USD with cart. No additional tax or resort fees although expected based on the fine print.
Needs an Overhaul
Really run down. On a par with a mediocre public course in the states.
overpriced River course
I played the River course at Wyndham "resort" I knew i was in trouble when I saw/heard they had gas carts , I overpaid for this course at $128, not worth it, later did I learn they had a round on golf now for $50, that's about what it's worth, course was so so, greens fair but not fast, range was $15 for all day good deal.
Older Layout in need of yardage markers
Unlike River Course, this older design needs a refresh from the designers and yardage markers both in fairways and at the multiple tee boxes available. Guessing in windy conditions not fun as I left several shots out there due to no yardage help. Bring range finder.
For the money though (booked thru golf now) u save big.... Like the design but would prefer playing River course. Much more challenging... only 1 hole on "Ocean" course and was nice..but expected more holes near the sands.....
WINDY
Nice layout with vast scenery of Rainforest and Mtns.
Played from tips with wind conditions at a constant 10-15 MPH and course was challenging. Lots of rain here means mud balls and very little roll but course conditions better than sister Ocean Course. Would play this one before playing Ocean but for 50 bucks, both were well worth it.
Amazing Courses
We played both the River on 12/21/16 and the Ocean on 12/24/16 and loved them both. Great deal with GolfNow at $50pp for 18 w/cart! In the 2 days we were there, we must have seen well over 100 iguanas! The scenery on the River is more rainforest, on the ocean side (just one 3 par on the ocean) was very beautiful and more open with ponds. We did get caught in pop up rain storms on both courses, but it's quickly there and quickly over-so be prepared. Only issue we had was how high priced the beer was-$6-$8 for a beer. Highly recommend these courses. Tip: The river does not come back to the clubhouse at the turn, but you can order food from the cart girl!
Course Rio Mar 2 hole ocean view
I booked for the river course, arrived and the course was closed due to lack of security on the course, since i was there already played the Ocean course which has 2 holes along the ocean, dont know why they call it the ocean course. Should be called Village Course ita surrouded by cottages and villas.
Couse layout is challening fairways are somewhat dry or burnt, greens are hard and not manicured as shown on several sites, extreamly expensive for the type of course.
Vacation golf
Had an excellent round at Rio Mar ocean course. Played the river course 8 years ago. Nice courses great golf now price. Excellent resort.
Decent island course
Interesting layout, with lots of mountain views. Conditions ok - lots of burnt out areas. Definitely not as green as the pictures on this site and others may have you think. Pace was great - course was empty. But for almost $200 per player, Im not sure this is worth it.
Good course for the money
It's a nice course with a reasonably interesting layout. It seemed to be undergoing some improvements as there were piles of sand in some places. That would be good as the course was in somewhat rough shape with pervasive patchy lies and shaggy greens. The practice range was good, though there weren't many balls out, and the staff was very friendly. We were late because of sketchy directions and traffic, but they very kindly let us play anyway. It was a nice day and the course was nice for the price ($95 each).
lizards by the river
great scenic views, plays well, great staff and plenty of Iguanas.
Poor Condition & GF too much
As pointed out in other reviews, interesting that they call it the ocean course when there is only one hole, par 3 16th, that runs along the ocean. The condition of the course was bad. From the very first hole, all the right edge first cut rough along cart path was GUR. Needless to say, carts had to stay on paths. It was 80 plus degrees, 2pm tee off and the course was soaked wet, not from rain, obviously overwatered, walking through sodden fairways and balls plugging on the fairways. A general lack of definition between fairway and first cut, as though it needed cutting. Sometimes just difficult to see the actual shape and layout of the hole. All that said, the greens weren't too bad and I enjoyed my round of golf, HOWEVER, I wouldn't bother going back. They should reduce the Green Fee when the condition is so poor, it's not worth the money they are asking. I paid just 20$ more to play Bahia and the conditions there are far superior, night and day!!
nice resort course
the course is very nice if you can get the hot deal, i paid 65.00 to play and that is about what it should be, there are other courses nearby but much more expensive. the course: wide generous fairways the rough was deceivingly thick you could be standing next to your ball and not see it but it was playable, the greens overall were in good shape a couple had fungus around the edges but very playable. this is a nice resort course it doesnt beat you up too bad on errant shots and is still a challenge for all levels
Lousy conditions
My wife and i played this course. Tee boxes are in terrible condition, fairways and rough not much better and the greens were autrocious, like playing on velcro....the pace of play was fine since we were the only ones out in the afternoon. You can only see the ocean from one hole. And its an ugly par 3 in bad shape. For what you pay to play here it is not worth the money. I have played munincipal courses in better condition. I would definitely not recommend this course to anyone.
Ctbisagba, thanks for the review. We are going to PR in 2 weeks and would like to know if the $50 green fee was rack rate or Golf Now day of play rate. We called the Rio Mar resort and they quoted $165 green fee. Seems very pricey for an average 3 star rating.
