Old Mill Golf Club

My friends and I sincerely do NOT appreciate the man with the prosthetic leg that works there following us around the entire time we were playing golf on Sunday May 30th and harassing us. He was extremely rude and I’m not sure at all what his problem with us was. We got to the second hole and he came up to us and told us to hurry up and play faster. His exact words were, “alright kids listen up, this is how the holes need to be played at this course today...” he went on from there to tell us that we were only allowed to spend 15 minutes on each hole even though we were waiting for the people in front of us to play... when we told him that we were waiting for people who were playing in front of us to get done he snapped at us and told us the course was wide open in front of us and to hurry it up. Ot true!! He then told us that we all needed to pay a prospector fee at the clubhouse. We all paid a lot of money to play that course on Sunday and we are not “kids” by any means and are all experienced golfers. I have been coming to this course my entire life and have never been treated so rude and disrespectfully. He then proceeded to hang around at random holes we were playing for the rest of the 18 holes. He would literally sit right behind wherever our carts were parked and just glare at us all. We finally asked him if there was a problem and if we could help him with something and he finally took off. That was the 16th hole. I’m furious about getting treated like this. I will be telling everyone I know about this. I grew up in Holladay and am so disappointed in my neighborhood golf course and their employees and the disrespect I was shown to myself and my friends on Sunday.

This course is well groomed although in late summer can have wet spots. From year to year they keep changing the hole layout from the front nine to the back nine so that is somewhat idiotic. But the north nine is only 35 par, they should lengthen the 4th hole to make it a par 5. The south nine start out fantastic but then you run into a dogleg right sometime this hole is #15 and sometime #6, like I said some what idiotic. It is a very challenging hole due to the narrowness as you have to hit an accurate shot through trees and over a ditch. The last 3 holes on the south nine lets call them 16, 17, and 18 but sometimes are 7, 8 and 9, are just a ridiculous layout of holes. The group of men I play with have tried to name them but can come to an agreed consensus of whether to call them (The Crucible, The Quagmire, The Enigma, The Conundrum or The Paradox) the course should name them something along those lines to let player know what they are in for. The last three hold of this south course should be remodeled one of the short par 4's should be made into a par 3. The last hole #9 or #18 should be converted to a par 5. Back the tees up so the Creek is not 180 yards out for the intermediate player to have to always sacrifice an extra shot to stay out of the water. The Creek should be at least 235 yard away from the White Tees.

Relatively short municipal course with some interesting holes. There are several holes where it’s not wise to hit driver off the tee. Course was in good shape for a county owned course. Some greens had significant breaks and were very fast if you were putting downhill. Nice views of the Salt Lake valley.

Fun course to play. It's on the mountain bench so great views of the Salt Lake Valley. Highly recommend to anyone looking to play in Salt Lake City.

First time playing Old Mill and played it while visiting on business. Played this course on Weekday afternoon in July, and it was HOT, so as a result pace of play was great, as me and my playing partner finished 18 (with a cart) in 3 hours. Keep this in mind, you are playing at a higher elevation and the ball will fly at least one more club than you need. The positives: Really amazing views of mountains and valleys as the course is situated right up against the Wasatch Mountains. Second, I am glad I took a cart cause it was hilly as all get out. The layout was fairly straight forward, as a first timer new where to hit it, but not just the boring straight shot and driver on every hole. The course is not very long (played from the blues but of note, the front nine was narrow with lots of forced carries and if you miss the fairway, your ball is gone into wasteland. The back nine was much more open off the tee with some easy driving holes. As a result, scoring on the back was much easier. The negatives: The greens were not in that great of shape, lots of ball marks and green damage from previously unrepaired ball marks. On every green I repaired at least 3-4 additional ball marks in addition to my own. The course should enforce golfers repairing their marks have staff regularly drive to greens repairing balls marks- this was disappointing. Second, the driving range was mats only and irons only in the middle of summer- this was the one thing they did enforce. Lastly, they should have had forced carry yard markers on the tee and for dog legs, as it was tough to judge distances that were required to keep the ball in play. Overall, it was a decent experience for the money, make sure you bring lots of extra balls and a range finder.

Course was in great shape considering how popular this course is. Bunkers could use more sand. Wonderful views of South Salt Lake Valley. Front nine pretty open and forgiving. Changes character at hole 15. Location is very convenient for most living south of the city.

Fun course. Plays harder than ratings. Mid handicaps can get in trouble quick and post some high scores. Great staff. Expensive 19th hole.

Old Mill is in great shape for this early in the season. greens are in good shape and the fairways are in good shape as well. Really nice shape for late February.

This place gets tons of traffic it is by far the most heavily played course in salt lake. Awesome layout 15-18 are a real test from the back tees. Greens speed here is always moderate never fast.

One of the more scenic courses, and one of the most unforgiving as well. The course sits on the side of Mt. Olympus of the Wasatch Mountains, which provide completely gorgeous views of the Salt Lake Valley. However, this layout makes the course uncompromising and the thief of many of your errant balls. Some holes have fairways that are only a few meters wide at points, thick forests, tees almost one hundred feet above the fairway, and others have you teeing off around the mountain blind.
However, the unique challenges of the course were almost completely overshadowed by the absolutely grounds crew. Three times while preparing to tee off, the same man approached and proceeded to mow the very tee box that I was standing on. He didn't stop, move to another hole or even wait for me to hit. Not only was this dangerous, but the most inconsiderate thing that I have ever experienced on a golf course. This all but ruined our experience with the course. The staff seemed relatively indifferent from the beginning, so I didn't bother complaining in person. I will recommend this course only because of the unique and massive challenges it presents along with its unprecedented scenery.
It's too bad SL County can't hire even a mediocre staff/crew to operate and maintain it.
