Carved out of pecan orchard, San Saba River Golf Course is one you don't want to miss when you're within reasonable distance of this quaint little town. More than 600 pecan trees dominate the landscape, helping the course produce more than 30,000 pounds of pecans each year. Unlike other small-town courses, there is nothing easy about a golf round at San Saba. The front nine, built in 1972, is really tight, and anything that strays from the fairway will require imaginative recovery shots from the pecan trees. Most of the par 4s are close to 400 yards, the par 3s play over 170, and the two par 5s are extremely long, including no. 9, which goes 625 yards from the back. San Saba River's back nine, added in 1987, isn't as squeezed by the pecans, but has more water hazards that impact play. This side also has two long par 5s, but there are a few solid birdie chances, especially the 152-yard, par-3 13th.

Greens of beauty

This was our second time to play San Saba in 6 weeks. The greens are the best I've seen anywhere, a little slow, but beautiful. The fairways have just been aerated, they are a little thin, but should be great soon. I highly recommend this course!

Hidden gem

If you are looking for a course in good condition for a bargain, this is it. The greens were some of the best I’ve seen this spring, and the fairways are consistently good. You won’t find new carts or range balls, but you’ll be treated to a super friendly staff and an interesting layout winding through a former pecan orchard along the San Saba River for a bargain price. Pack a lunch and enjoy Hill Country golf.

Perfection

The Course overall, was in great shape. The greens were immaculate. Speed was around 10 and if you could read the very subtle breaks, you could make everything.

Just play it

And see for yourself what a great small town course this one is. Just try to avoid the 1000’s of trees. Lol They’re not friendly at all.

Hidden Gem

I had heard of San Saba Golf Course a few years ago, but it’s quite a drive for a same day trip. My son in law and I were headed to our ranch south of Sonora, so we decided to drive a little out of the way to try it out. San Saba is a challenging course, it demands accurate tee shots, and the greens are tricky. The course is going thru the winter rye to the summer greens at the moment, but they were still in very good shape. I highly recommend this course if you’re ever close by.

The locals are lucky

Very friendly and helpful staff. Course played easier than it would during spring and summer when the trees (mostly tall oaks) leaf out and the spring rains fill the river and ponds that play on many holes on the course. Greens were large and in great shape. A pleasant round. Will definitely come back.

Tremendous Hill Country Golf Course

Starts with the friendly greeting upon entering the club house and just gets better when playing the beautiful course. Holes with nice character - players are very welcoming - water comes into play on several holes - pecans trees come into play on every hole which enhances the true character of playing this delightful course. Highly recommend it. You won’t go wrong playing San Saba. Also, check out the nice merchandise in the pro shop.

Surprised

First time for us to play San Saba River Course, we were very surprised with course conditions. Only thing we had to go on with 5yr old YouTube videos. Man were they so wrong. Fairways, tee boxes and greens were is great shape. Greens alittle bumpy, but overall good. They have had many storms that way, so the course needed alittle TLC in cleanup. (Which they were working on). We will be back

San Saba Municipal Golf Course

No burkers. No water stations or beverage carts. No amenities. Make sure to bring your own water. The tee boxes and fairways were satisfactory, but the greens, which had been recently aerated with tall turf, require some improvement.

Nice but challenging.

Fairways and greens were in really good condition. But this course is tight due to volume of trees and lower canopy.
