Like many other private country clubs, the International Golf Club & Resort 45 minutes west of Boston is in the midst of a transition. Designed by Roger Rulewich, Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston, Massachusetts was some two decades in the making. Its original nine is considered one of the best back nines in New England.
The Oaks golf course has a more scenic and pleasant resort feel of the two designs at The International Golf Club & Resort, located roughly 45 miles west of Boston. Once word gets out that The Oaks is open to all, the Tom Fazio design could make a run at the nearby Red Tail Golf Club as Boston's premier public playground.
Red Tail Golf Club in Devens has soared above the competition to became the best public golf course in Massachusetts, according to Golfweek's 2013 state rankings. Located roughly 45 miles northwest of downtown Boston, Red Tail delivers moments of sublime scenery mixed with the terror of trying to execute a shot over a gaping bunker or deep ravine.
