What A Layout
Course is a hidden gem in a loaded Wisconsin golf scene. Course has a sneaky good layout with great views of the rocky outcroppings around the course and some hilly terrain. Course was originally built around 1900 and several of the greens bare some old school characteristics. I walked the course, but during the summer months this may be difficult.
If in the La Crosse / Onalaska area this is a must play.
1st but not the last.
Really enjoyed terrain and different skills took to play the course. Challenging but fun!
SLIPPING!
The course seems like it's slipping, or maybe it's just been overrun with traffic this season!
The greens were decent, the fairways were just OK, the rough in spots was super thick, and there was bare ground in other areas.
One big pet peeve is that most of the tee boxes are small and riddled with unfilled divots. And, the newer tee boxes on 13, 14, and 15 were massive crabgrass fields, particularly the blue tee's.
Add to it, some of the bunkers are rock hard, whereas others are soft - in a word, inconsistent.
It's OK as "muni's" go and if you go in expecting a subpar experience you might be rewarded with an average one!
Good municipal course.
Enjoyed playing this course. A few spots are a little tight on layout but still fun little course.
In General Good w/ a Couple Issues
The golf course is relatively nice although the scars from some drainage repair seem to be lingering on holes 4,5 and 6 -- greens are improved since I last played in late April. The bunkers are decent but rakes are not plentiful leading to a lot of unattended to foot prints from players not raking - same goes for ball marks on the greens - normal public course stuff. The course is pretty short but can be tight in spots -- greens hold well and putt true. It's hard for me to gauge pace of play as I play very early in the morning. Their idea of a "HOT DEAL" isn't very HOT... the facilities near by offer decreasing prices the closer to the tee time for their hot deals where this facility doesn't. Value is only OK -- regular rate seems a little high to me!
Monsoon Rains at Forest Hills
We were having a great round through six holes when the monsoon rains washed us out. Never seen rain like this in Lacrosse before, it was quite a day! We'll try again tomorrow!
Abusive Ranger
All was good until ranger yelled at us for holding up play at 9 for absolutely no reason. Our group of 4 was playing at a pace of 1:35 per 9 until we had to wait a 1-2 minutes per hole starting at 5. We hit one ball OB at 9 in the ranger’s eyesight and we looked for the ball to make sure it was OB for 3 minutes while the group behind us was still on 8th green, and we get verbally abused by the ranger for holding up play and to get moving.
Our group a collective 33 handicap (5, 7, 9, 12) and we play fast. Without being held up we would have completed the 9 holes in 1:35. Ranger was extremely rude and called us liars.
Never going back again and I would not recommend this course to anyone. I have never been treated this poorly and I golf 80 rounds per year in a lot of different places. Even in instances where we have been behind the allotted time per 9 holes all you need is a gentle reminder and you pick up the pace as a group.
I have heard similar complaints about this course from different people but this is the first time I had to experience that and I have too many options to have to worry about experiencing that kind of garbage while golfing.
Beautiful course
Beautiful bluff views. Course was in good condition. Always thought of playing here. Glad I did. Not from the LaCrosse area.
Course is in Excellent condition
Greens are amazing. Pace of play was a little slow but not horrible. Course is in great shape. Great job Keith, Josh and the entire crew keeping the course in great shape and the Clubhouse Professional and friendly.
Good challenging golf
Very interesting and challenging layout. Fairways and greens in great shape. Staff very friendly and helpful. Although I’m from Arizona, I hope to play it again before we head back. Would definitely recommend this course!
Every guilty golfer thinks "the Ranger was abusive". The tone of your comments seem defensive so I'd bet you were guilty of slow and got caught. All the other comments (that aren't yours) are very complementary of Forest Hills.
