Lake Mills Golf Club first opened in 1927, making it one of the area's oldest courses. The original nine-hole course was shaped and molded from gently rolling farmland. The course eventually expanded to a full 18 holes and has undergone other major renovations since it first opened though it still retains the same traditional character as the original course. At just over 6,700 yards from the tips, the course has several holes that will please long hitters. The occasional water hazard comes into play as well as several strategically placed bunkers. Mature trees also line the fairways, demanding accuracy. Lake Mills Golf Club has a fair amount of challenges in store but beginners should still feel confident about approaching it, especially with four different sets of tees available.

Not Bad

Aside from the quirky 8th hole (90-degree dogleg) which required me to hit back-to-back gap wedges from tee to green, the course is decent and challenging. The greens were nice but tee boxes a bit shaggy. I'd play it again, especially as a hot deal on a Monday when the course was pretty quiet.

Need to keep it up~

This was our first time playing this course in the area. We were disappointed that the fairways and tee boxes were a bit longer than usual. Also the greens were pretty rough with a lot of divot holes. It's important to keep those things up to compete with neighboring courses.

Average at Best

The course is average at best. Fairways are scruffy, and the majority of greens are full of unrepaired ball marks. The fairways are the superintendents responsibility, and the ball marks are each players. Not worth $45.00 a round.

Good course good pace

Played a twosome with a foursome ahead of us. The pace was perfect and we managed to complete the round in 3 and half hours. The course was in good condition and was not too difficult or too easy. It was just right.

Not worth the price

Until lake mills golf course finds a means of better founding and maintenance the course will remain poorly taken care of and overpriced. The fairways look like rough. I dont think they have ever sprayed for bugs. The tee boxes are like hitting off of a packed down dirt road. Unfortunate

I am not sure if you were aware of this, but at the time you posted this review, Lake Mills and many of the surrounding communities were under one of the worst droughts we had experienced in decades. As reported on the news every single day during that time, average rainfall through the month of July should have been approximately 32 inches. We had had less than 12. I hope we can both agree that this would qualify as an extreme drought.
I understand those who are uneducated as to golf course operations would accuse the golf course of poor maintenance as you did and think the solution is just to water more. It is simply not that easy. Irrigation is made to supplement rain, not replace it. It is virtually impossible to keep up with an extended drought like this one. Given the heat, low humidity at times, and wind, the evapotranspiration rates are higher than a course’s irrigation system can put down at night. We personally put down tens of millions of gallons more water than normal. In short, even though courses in that situation water every night, they can’t keep up.
With that kind of prolonged drought, the soil can also become hydrophobic, which means that no matter how much water is put on it, the soil will not absorb it, creating what are known as isolated dry spots.
Adding to the misery is that fact that many municipalities put water restrictions in place during times like these, which limits your ability to water. This compounds the frustration for golf course owners and maintenance staff alike, as do reviews like these.
The bottom line is all the courses in this situation were doing their best to keep up. The good news is MOST people were aware of current events and empathized with our situation.
As to your comment saying we don’t spray for bugs, that, too, is blatantly false. Our annual chemical program includes spraying for grubs, cutworms, ants, and Japanese beetles, which are the common bugs golf courses spray for in this area.

This is extremely disappointing to read. You do realize the entire Southeastern part of the state has been in a severe and extreme drought the entire summer, right? Every single course I have gone to in this location has these same issues right now. When it is so hot and humid like it has been, all the water they put on the course is basically lost to evaporation. I would get leaving a review like this if the course always looked dry, but it doesn't. This is an extreme situation affecting every course in this location. Maybe a little compassion and understanding from you for these struggling small businesses might be in order right now?
