Koshkonong Mounds Country Club

About
Tucked amongst the rolling hills along the eastern shores of its namesake lake, Koshkonong Mounds Country Club pays homage to the Winnebago tribes that are native to the area. Koshkonong is a word from their language that means "these waters we live on." The club was established in 1870 on land that was once known as the country's premier duck hunting destination. The golf course was constructed in 1922 and still stands as Fort Atkinson's only 18-hole layout. The historic Indian effigy mounds were carefully preserved and incorporated into the course as navigational hazards. The golf course is a formidable test in addition to being scenic with plenty of blinds shots in store thanks to the dramatic elevation changes. Golfers should also be prepared for uneven lies. Both distance and accuracy are required for scoring well at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club.

Wisconsin Hidden Gem
I did not know what to expect when I rolled up for my late Saturday round. Was able to walk as many as I could for 9 hole walking rate and finished just after sunset. Course has 9 older holes built in the 1920s and 9 newer holes build in the 1980s.
The original 9 holes are on the hillier terrain and are the more memorable ones. They also have smaller more unique greens.
Thoughtful Layout
The Mounds is a smart, challenging layout that keeps you on your toes. The undulating terrain, particularly on the front nine, gives the course a lot of character. Holes 7 (a half moon-shaped par-5), 8 (a shorter par 4 that forces you to pick a strategy off the tee), and 18 (memorable uphill par 5 that finishes overlooking the lake) are holes to write home about. Fairways and greens are in great shape this year too.
Slow and PRICEY!
Course is very nice but expensive and very slow play $72 for 2 people for 18 holes, including cart, and $26 for a six pack of beer. Yikes!
Took 5 hours to play 18 holes. Had to wait on almost every shot. Rude people on course accusing us of cutting in front of them. Need to pair people up to help speed up play.
A Great Experience
Will be a 3rd year member this year. The Mounds is challenging for all levels of players. Strategically placed sand traps and water can make for a long day but with proper ball placement, a golfer can take his/her chances. Key points to be aware of is a severe sloping green on #4 where ball placement is vital, the par 5 (7th) where being long on your drive hurts more then helps due to a sloping fairway into the woods, and the 11th hole where being short of the green may be a better play since it's hard to hold with your approach shot. The staff (Matt, Evan, Rosie, etc) is always friendly and helpful and it's always nice to meet Jason in the bar/lounge after the round to relax after a day of hopeful bliss. Many different membership packages available making it quite affordable as well. I would strongly encourage giving the Mounds an opportunity to challenge your skills. You won't be disappointed!
Good outing course
Played this course in a golf outing and it sets up pretty nice for that expect the getting out to the holes was a little backwards (took way to long). Course I thought was in very good shape for your average 3 star type of Wisconsin course. Greens and fairways were in good shape. Also I believe the course is set up for players to score well of playing by yourself. They have a a pretty nice bar on the inside. Nice both that'd I'd recommend for a place to play of you just want a nice relaxing day at the course.
The Mounds
The course condition is excellent; greens are in great shape. This is a beautiful, challenging south central Wisconsin golf course.
Conditions terrible
Greens were not of good quality. We hit balls in short rough which was about 4 inches deep having difficulty locating. Waited for 5 minutes to check in and a cook upstairs came down to get us started.
Very good golf course
I went there with my boyfriend in the morning. The weather is very nice and the course condition is very nice too. We really liked it.
Ah, but those greens!
I've played Koshkonong Mounds several times before, and always drive away shaking my head at the quality of the greens. Bumpy, irascible, slow, somewhat irregular from old course to new. It is the one thing that I dislike about this course.
Otherwise: beautfiul venue, mature trees, challenging lay out.
Great value
This is a great course. Well kept, challenging and fun.
Great but challenging course
I've golf this course at least 15 times and enjoy it everytime I play it. The fairways are quite hilly, the greens are pretty challenging and the staff is always friendly. Always with good you have a little bad. Don't expect to have a few cold beer with your pals after your round because they have a wedding every weekend and shut down the clubhouse. STUPID! Also the last couple times I was there on a Saturday the grounds crew were mowing the fairways. We had at least 5 holes where they were hanging out in front of us cruising back and forth and kind of in our way. It's kind of distracting when you're 90 yards out and the 2 guys on tractors are 30 yards away from you talking to each other over there idling mowers. I guess I just don't understand why they don't do the Maintenance during the week when it's not as busy instead of on the weekend when it's packed. However I will be back cause I enjoy the course.
Beautiful Lake View
You start with a great view of Lake Koshkonong by the clubhouse. Old style course with mature Oaks lining most fairways. Greens rolled true with moderate speed. I was impressed that nearly every group had women included and, although the course was packed, pace of play was 4 hours 15 minutes. The final hole is a par 5 uphill back to the clubhouse with effigy mounds on either side of the 18th green. I like a course with a lot of variety and this course has several memorable holes.
Very nice course
I would recommend this course and love the views especially on the 18th green.
Can't wait to play it again.
This is a fun course, if you can find it. I don't think there is an entry sign and the roads are somewhat narrow. The course is in great shape and well maintained. The greens are a little small and usually have a lot of slope on them. Have to be careful where to land the ball on approaches. There are lots of hills and valleys which adds to the fun.
nice course deceivingly challenging
Course was in great shape!! Staff was very friendly and inviting. Course was fairly open but provided a good challenge.
A lot of older "locals" on the course that were enjoying a leisurely round. Overall speed of play wasn't too bad.
Worth a look!
Better Early in the Season
We have golfed at Koshkonong four times this season. The first time out was the best. Yesterday the course was in rough condition. The greens were very rough and shaggy. We were members the last several years. We don't plan to join this year. The course just isn't in the shape it has been in the past.
Koshkonong
Very nice golf course and fun to play. Accuracy and distance are both important.
To Me, Has Best 18th Finishing Hole.
I have played Konosh a couple of times over past 3 years. I holed out with a 39-41=80 here from the black tees. Very nice layout, friendly staff and half way house to get some snacks and food. I call Konosh a advanced golfers scoring course. Hit 200 or better off the tee and its lets you shine with your chipping game, And they have nice size greens that I thought rolled faster than average greens, but not to bad. A couple putts on practice greens and your good to adjust your putting here. Konoshkong is a fun course. it throws a lot at you from many different angles. Senic course, and in middle of no where and is hidden gem. My reason I Love this course is I just Love the 18th finishing hole. Is straight par 5 just 451, but you sky over the valley on the tee shot, and its straight up hill 3 tears to high elevated green. You will not see the green until you reach it. and the view of the lake . I nickname this awesome 18th hole stairway to the sky or Heavens. Pace of play is good here to. I recommend this at least once. And course is in very good shape.
