first time
Heard lots about Elks. Lived up to it hype. Great track. Some soft spots due to rains. Expected it. Stay out of the trees or your in trouble. Worth the drive and money.
Great look
Course was very wet do to recent heavy rains but had some gteat holes
Excellent Course
The course is in excellent condition. Trees line every hole to the left and right raising the level of difficulty to those of us who can't always hit it straight. The elevated greens also add to the degree of difficulty. Excellent challenging course ranked in the top 20 courses to play in the state of Illinois.
Great track
really nice layout. Totally headin back............
Greens are sketchy
I truly enjoy playing the Elks and this was my first round here in 2015. The folks are always welcoming/extremely nice and this is a great old school course that has stood the test of time. Tee boxes were a tad shaggy but they want the grass to grow out a little prior to cutting them down a little I guess. Fairways were real nice but again a little shaggy...but in real good shape.
Unfortunately there are several areas of some of the putting greens which sustained winter damage and this course is all about the old school green complexes with lots of big breaking putts and undulations. The greens at the Elks the past two seasons 2013/2014 were absolutely outstanding. Here's hoping the damaged areas will grow in with better weather and become less bumpy......my playing partner and I had at least 10 putts which were extremely bumpy due to the surface inconsistency.....I know the super will work on this but must rate overall conditions at 3 stars at what normally is a well above 4 star plus course. Giving the Elks an overall 4 but the condition of the greens was a disappointment so it should be 3.75 or so. I'll definitely return in June/July and offer an update.
Tough, but fair.
The greens are extremely contoured and fast. Approach shots landing in wrong spot, often run away from whole. But this is a classic, early 20th century gem that must be played to appreciate. The course was in great condition for the time of year.
best gem of a course that few golfers know about
The course is challenging not because of water or sand, since water comes to play only on the 9th hole and you will see more sand in your local park district sand box.
The fast tiered greens that when cut on a hot day will bring you to your knees. The grass bunkers next to the elevated greens are not something that you see everyday.
It seems that it is always windy at the Elks and having a good scoring round does not happen often.
Been playing the Elks for a few years, yes the drive from Chicago is long, but the friendly staff and the course makes the drive well worth it.
Three and a half hours any day of the week is the norm.
Excellent course.
great course, challenging greens, lots of elevation changes, excellent layout.
Greens are fast and challenging
Another wonderful day at the Elks. Always fun and well maintained. Old school golf with extremely challenging green complexes. Your short game will improve if you play this course often. Scoring on this course requires a hot flat stick....as well as sharp iron play/approach shots. A five star rating is extremely difficult to attain by my standards and playing this track is never a disappointment.
Great course design..
The bent grass greens on this course were in spectacular condition. They were quick with subtle breaks. The rye blue grass fairways were in desperate need of a trimming. It was impossible to spin the ball out of the fairway in order to stop it on the green. Every shot from the fairway was like hitting out of the ruff.
Excellent course layout.
Great course designed in 1929 and has withstood the test of time. Very little sand, however the elevated greens and protecting moguls add enough difficulty. Worth the hour trip from Chicago.
Kankakee Elks C.C.
The greens were blazing fast, the fairways were like carpet.. Great place.
Can see why it's almost 5 stars
This course isn't too much to look at but it is well cared for and there isn't anything really bad about the shape of the course. The greens when we played were tough. Subtle breaks and also huge sweeping slopes are what you are up against. They could have been playing a bit faster than normal as they were recently aerated and a bit dry. Our group, group not just an individual 3 putted most of the day. Fairways were narrow on some holes lots of the holes play uphill. Wish there was some sand bunkers that challenged you that was probably the only negative. Semi private club without the Tiger wannabe's. For $13 we all agreed we would be back again.
This course has great features
Really liked the elevated and rolling greens. Very challenging trying to read your putts.
Ranking is well deserved
There is a reason Golf Magazine lists Kankakee Elks as one of the 15 best open to the public courses in Illinois. The faiways and greens are always in great shape. The course could use a little work on the cart paths, but for the grassy parts, pristine. Look forward to playing this course many times again, worth the short drive from the Chicago area. Elevated greens require an extra club to reach.
course is very well manicured
The staff is super friendly, very easy to get along with. My actual booking day was different than the day I played, and it was no problem at all for the staff at the pro shop. Furthermore, the course is in great shape, both fairways and rough.
Challenging
Great course in very good condition. Challenging greens as well with elevation and rolling greens.
Great course for the right price
The Elks is a challenging course that is well maintained. They offer great rates on golfnow, as well as the $22.00 round on Mondays and Fridays. Can't find a better course for the price! Elevated, rolling, greens and mature trees lining the fairways make this course a real challenge.
Great course!
Enjoyed the course, it was nice to have a course with some elevation in this area. Many courses around are flat and wide open. They have a well kept course.
