Flying L Guest Ranch Golf Course

About
The majestic, rolling hills and towering oaks of the scenic Texas Hill Country serve as a backdrop to the Flying L Guest Ranch Golf Course & Resort. The course begins with a challenging front nine with numerous doglegs and uneven lies at every turn. The signature hole, the par-3 seventh, features a green that is surrounded by water on three sides and a spectacular view of the mountains. Flying L Guest Ranch Golf Course & Resort's back nine is less challenging than the front nine, but it has a few interesting surprises in store. It has a more classic and open layout than the front nine, but there are four holes with water and several strategically placed bunkers to watch out for. Flying L also features a two-tiered driving range with a chipping and putting green.

Great option during Covid-19 times
One of the very few courses open during covid-19 stay at home times. I drove up from San Antonio, it's a little out of the way, but worth it if you don't have anywhere else to play. There are quite a few doglegs left throughout, so if you draw the ball, you'll feel comfortable off the tee. Being my first time, my score wasn't that great, since I didn't know how to properly play some of the holes and especially since it was really windy. The greens roll real fast. It's decently long from the Blue tees at over 6600 yards. It's a nice walking course, gets a little hilly on the back nine, which makes for a great workout. Good conditions. Some of the greens were in rough shape, that's why I'm giving it 3 stars, otherwise it'd be a solid 4-star course.
Golf course is a fun course to play
This course is my home course even though I live 50 miles away. The golf course is wide open and you can not get in trouble very often unless you hit a really bad shot. Alot of the oak trees have died. Flying L also has a driving range , water park, pools minature golf , and cabins to stay.Great place to bring the family.
Handicap 12
Great pace of play and not difficult for a beginner. The course was in fairly good condition considering the winter months... Greens need to be tended to.... Overall a pleasant environment and terrific price.... I will be back at that rate and hopefully better weather will make this course very promising....
The old Flying L is back
This is the best that the course has looked in quite a while. The greens were very smooth and fairly
quick, especially downhill. We did not have to bump our balls in the fairways as the lies were really good.
Also, the rough has been mowed so no problem finding balls in it.
Got a great rate on Golfnow but their regular prices are a great value too.
Added bonus for a Helotes resident like me was it's such a relaxing drive to and from the course vs
some of the San Antonio courses.
If should be the Lying L
The round I booked at the flying L resort was a
horrible experience 1. The person in the pro shop was not inviting didn't say good morning, hello or anything like that other than "
i'm not a mind reader" which i thought was very disrespectful. Then he goes
into this diatribe about " there's a chance of rain & if it rains we don't
give rain checks, what course does that???? , 2. The course was terrible
brown not green at all with dead patches on the course, 3 . i wish i could
ask for a refund because of the bad service. Thank you for you attention to
this matter.
Hill Country Course
Awesome course tucked away in the hills of Bandera, TX. Nice course to play with nice greens and good pace. I will be back for sure to play.
Greens are back
Several months ago they almost lost their greens. They were horrible. But thanks to the diligent work of their pro and the greenskeeper they have the greens rolling great again.
Hill Country Golf
The staff and local members have given their all to improve this course, it gets better every day. It's a fun hill country golf course that provides challenges yet makes it enjoyable for all levels. The scenery and wildlife make for a relaxing day on the golf course.
Could have been a great day
It is unfortunate that the lady that was there that morning was not very customer friendly. We arrived 20 minutes early and even if there was not a soul on the course (8:10 am), she said we had to wait for our tee time at 8:30 am. Nobody at all teed off during those 20 minutes. That's a shame because it is a great place.
It's Disappointing, This Course Has Seen Better Days
Twenty years ago this course was a gem. My son and I won the SouthTexas PGA Jr tournament here.
Today, although we were able to play in under three hours, there were only two other groups on this course.
Nothing has been done to upgrade or even maintain this golf course. They had a mower running on fairways with dead grass.
There are so many weeds, bare spots, and fire ants here along with over 150 huge dead live oak trees covered with Spanish Moss.
Many of these trees are well over 100 years old and most likely succumbed to oak wilt.
The dead trees should have been removed and the rest of the trees trimmed right away.
The greens were recently aerated but there are too many dead spots and sand covered areas on these greens. The greens are too bumpy and need to be rolled.
The fairways are full of weeds and most of the grass is either dead or dying. Finding the "fairway" can be tough.
The use of fertilizer and water and or a complete re-grassing is required.
There are several fairways like #8 which are not
clearly defined and in many cases the untrimmed trees block what is left of the fairway.
Overall, not much has been done to maintain or upgrade this golf course and it is a shame.
Getting Better
The course still needs work to improve fairways and bunkers. The Greens are improving each time I play. The worker who does the pin placement needs some instruction on how to install the cup. There is a slight mound around most of the pin locations.Overall, the round of golf can be very enjoyable.
Coming Around
The management is bringing the greens around and this was the one thing needed. The ladies have done a great job pulling the trouble grass out. Great course, like to get back to playing it once a week!
Thanks Folks
Good value - course conditions improving
I've played this course many times. It is a good value for the money with a friendly and helpful staff. The course condition suffered this past spring, but corrective action has greatly improved the fairways and especially the greens. However, there is still room for improvement, and many of the sand traps remain substandard. Regardless, the course is challenging and a good value. I plan to play it many more times in the future. .

Great time.. Greens were a little slow but adjusted
