Great course

For first part of May the wasn’t bad. Majority of the greens had some winter kill, the ones that had tarps on were very good

Whitecourt Golf & Country Club

Having played here two years ago, there was no hesitation on my part in stopping by to play it again. I have fond memories of playing this collection of holes that are full of character, an abundance of tree lined fairways, a few sparkling ponds and amphitheater like greens. Architect Les Furber provided five sets of tees on each hole of this par 72 parkland layout that plays out to 6,889 yards, all of them good.

In June of 2023, the Athabasca River overflowed and put about 80 percent of the course under water. Staff did an exceptional job of cleaning it up as there wasn't any evidence of residual damage that I could see.

A modern and spacious clubhouse sits adjacent to the on site practice facilities consisting of two chipping and putting areas as well as a 300 yard driving range.

The tee boxes are all great driving platforms and are oriented in the right direction. The fairways are generously wide and well defined with trees native to the boreal forest they were carved out of. The course starts off with three consecutive dogleg lefts but as you work your way you'll find that an equal share go in the opposite direction. Not surprisingly, many of those dog legs harbor a bunker at the elbow that necessitates an accurate drive to open up the green. Most of the greens complexes are bounded by small grassy mounds and knolls and beside each of the greens is at least one bunker or more that magically grab hold of errant shots. The bunkers can play nice. I found them on three occasions and got up and down three times. The greens played exceptionally well.

From the 15th tee on, you are at the beginning of a nice stretch of finishing holes. The 400 yard par 4 15th is a wonderful wide open dogleg left that invites you to arm yourself with your latest acquisition of graphite and titanium technology and unleash the demons. The 16th is a long 440 yard par 4. It has a split, tiered fairway and three water hazards that players will need to navigate on their way to a large green tucked into a corner of trees. The 17th (186 yards) is another championship quality par 3, followed by the par 5 closing hole that heads out across humps and hollows to a slightly elevated green that sits in full view of the clubhouse. It's impossible to nominate a signature hole, as every hole has character and charm. The course conditions contributed to me shooting three better than my handicap.

The three visitors (Anita, Jonathan & Sheldon) from the town of High Prairie who joined me for the round were entertaining and good company.

The facilities within the clubhouse include a bar, a full restaurant and a well stocked pro shop. The staff proved to be excellent hosts. If you're ever in the neighborhood I would encourage you to take the time to play this wonderful course.

A Beautiful Hidden Gem in Alberta

We live in St. Albert and have always made the effort 2 - 3 times a year to travel out to play Whitecourt. It is one of our favorite courses. Tucked into the country like setting with NO homes and highways lining the course. Just you and Nature. A very challenging but extremely fun track. We always have a great round.

Whitecourt Golf & Country Club

I just finished playing the Westlock GC this morning and then made the 2 hour drive west to Whitecourt with the intent to play their course the following day. By chance I stopped by the clubhouse to book a tee time but was told by the staff that the course would be closed for the day for a private tournament. As it's the only course in town I decided to go ahead and play another 18 holes today.

The course sits adjacent to the historic Athabasca River whose headwaters originate in Jasper National Park.

The pro shop staff were friendly and courteous and a fellow by name of Laramie behind the counter was gracious enough to knock $10 dollars of my late afternoon green fee. He had me out on the first tee in short order. Atta boy Laramie.

Designed in 1991 by Les Furber, the course yardage ranges from 5,382 to 6,889 yards making it appealing to all skill levels. The tee boxes are big and provide a flat platform from which to pick and choose your lines. Course conditioning and consistent playing surfaces made for a great golf experience. Mature trees frame most fairways and provide a nice backdrop for every green. The greens are large, well contoured and played consistently. There are plenty of strategically placed bunkers that will attract any errant swings. There are only two water hazards on the course but neither one should be a concern.

The expansive clubhouse houses both the pro shop and restaurant. The natural beauty of the Whitecourt Golf and Country Club and ultimate challenge of the game made for a fantastic golf experience.

Well worth the drive

This course is in great condition. The layout is just challenging enough to still be fun. Lots of tree-lined fairways and bunkers around the greens. Course is not overly long, with a choice of tee boxes, so you have a good opportunity to make the greens in regulation if you are on targrt. Greens are fast and surprisingly undulating. Food is good and reasonably priced. The people are very friendly. We will definitely be back.
