Big Sky Golf and Country Club

There are mountain courses, then there is Big Sky. Mt Currie towers over what is essentially a flat course. You turn in the driveway and it's right in your face, seemingly ready to topple on to you. That's just part of the scenery. The course itself is fabulous! It is not an easy course, so make sure you play the correct tees (too much pride will kill you here), and have a few extra balls. That said, the course is fair and a pleasure to play. The greens are very puttable, but getting there can be an adventure.

I had played it twenty years ago, when it first opened, then played it 5 times over a 10 day period in July. I'm a low handicap, but different holes bit me in the butt most rounds. It is in excellent condition, the service is friendly and they have an excellent practice facility.

I would highly recommend taking the half hour drive past Whistler to play here. You will not regret it, and the vistas will long remain in your memory.

Out of the five courses in area - this is one of my favorites. The view of Mt Currie is incredible and each hole is a challenge. Only issue is that they should have recommended a yardage book mandatory for first time players.

No cart girl which was UN-expected considering the quality of course. This is just down the street from Meadows course - they are literally less than 1 km away but have different feel to each which was nice. I would definitely go back!

Located 25 min from Whistler, this widely praised Robert Cupp design is truly a one of a kind.

Driving towards the clubhouse, we were dwarfed by magnificent snow peaked mountains. The feeling gives you perspective, only like British Columbia can.

Greeted by Golf of Operations Michael MacNeil, we received some insights into not only the course but the people behind the operation. While I travel the world in search of these special places, I meet a lot of people that for the most part go through the motions. Many give a false sense of enthusiasm, which is interesting because they are always bad actors, why even try :)

Michael was all but going through the motions. The one thing I’ve learned about courses and teams in general, is that you can’t fake passion. It radiates through the course if the right people are in place. Big Sky is a shinning example of what a team can do.

GM Woody Bishop you should be very proud of what you have put together. Many properties have one thing or another, you’ve built the complete supernatural love affair, for any golfer.

I could go through each hole and the attachment your soul gets through the sensory overload, as you take your journey around the grounds. Words can only go so far. Big Sky has earned our respect and demands you experience it.

Pemberton has become a hot spot for BC/Washington residents and there is unlimited outdoors adventure awaiting you outside of the course. Big Sky ties nicely into the local community and is always running various events through their season to draw people to their home.

This course was in tremendous condition. The layout is challenging but fair, and makes you think all the way around. One hole has a creek that crosses it three times! The views on every hole are amazing. It is a joy to play. Of all the courses in the Whistler area, I would rate this second only to NIcklaus North. If you are out that way, definitely play this course.

The sea to sky drive always gets me going. The dramatic endless views across the ocean on every turn, gradually get more narrow and enclosed until you past whistler, the following 30kms is rod watchjng and how fast I can take each corner.

Big Sky has always been one of my favourite places to play, bring new people and business associates. It’s a unique energy from the property that is relaxed, classy and yet an intensity that you know you want to play good here. It deserves your attention that day.

The staff are always exceptional. From Woody the GM to shawn in the pro shop and Mike at the starters hut. The all give you a run down on everything happening.

The course has always been and was in phenomenal shape. No different this time.

I got talking to a few of the members and they had nothing bad to say. In fact they are members in a few nice courses in California (well known clubs) and this is their favourite of them all!

Big sky is blessed with a hidden gem of a property and run incredibly well from Woody Bishop down. Make your way to Pemberton, you will never regret the decision. (Unless it’s raining that day)

I don't hand out 5 stars to just any course. I did for Big Sky.

When comparing to the other course in the area, Whistler/Pemberton is known as a golf haven for North America, and of these spectacular courses I have to say overall Big Sky is the best.

It has a unique feeling to the course. It doesn't have the tourist feeling like the others do. Don't get me wrong, iIlove the other Whistler courses and Chateau is among my all time favourite. But there is something unique about Big Sky.

Clubhouse has the most welcoming feel. Clean and crisp. Pro shop has a great selection of everything, including a vast array of shoes.

Food is spectacular, practice faculties are good, not great.

Course itself is challenging with long par 4s, and holes that make sure you are dialled in on your number or you'll be in some long stuff, or dropping another ball.

The backdrop is BC! Mt.Currie is amazing. The course is on the valley floor so you see this backdrop the entire round. Big Sky is one of my favourite courses in Canada and has recently been ranked 13th best public courses in Canada by Score Golf Magazine. Well deserved.

It's about a 30-minute drive from the heart of Whistler to Pemberton to play one of the area's top courses, Big Sky Golf & Country Club. Those who make the trip are rewarded with a really neat setting beside Mount Currie to go with a pretty challenging Bob Cupp design. The course is dead flat, but has loads of water hazards in the form of creeks, wetlands and ponds. Some holes you even need to carry them twice. I wish I had another crack at this course as there were a few holes I felt uncomfortable on the first time. If you're making the drive up here, may as well stick around and play a PM round too.

The setting is the coolest part, however. You certainly feel isolated out here, and the view from the clubhouse patio is one of the best around. It's an extremely friendly facility and a top semi-private club with an international membership.

My group stopped by the Pemberton Distillery afterwards for a tour and tasting. This part of the valley is lower in elevation and very fertile, and the distillery is a rare one in that their spirits are certified organic. The gin is becoming a favorite, and they also just tapped into one of their first whisky batches. Do swing by.

I have played this course at least once annually for the past 20 years or so....in fact played it originally within a week of it's opening. I love this course and look forward to it every time. Pemberton has weather that is always a little warmer and less windy than Whistler Village and for me it always seems to be almost perfect.

The course is unusually flat and routed over what must have been marshy ground. Bob Cupp did a phenomenal job of designing a course which has a great variety of holes and which is both playable but resistant to scoring. There are many holes which require thought as well as good ball striking. Landing areas off the tee look generous but many times you need to be in the right spot to have a reasonable shot to the green.

The par 5 fourth hole is diabolical! My usual group of single digit players is generally fortunate to emerge with one par among us....and very often several triples or worse. It isn't long but has a creek meandering back and forth across the fairway no less than 3 times.

This last trip the course was unfortunately burnt out after a stretch of 40 degree weather which killed the poa. They warned us beforehand and charged a very low rate and replay rate (always play 36 there). The greens were actually better than they'd said.

The staff are always very courteous and the food there is exceptional. This is a course I could play every day. I would suggest playing different tees if you play more than one round. The course is equally good from any distance but it provides interesting differences in club selection and strategy.

Very worth the 30 minute drive from Whistler.

We play here every year, since we first discovered it (2001, as I recall). It's a beautiful course with stunning views of Mt. Currie, and is both playable and challenging, with enough tee choices to meet all needs.
Bonus - On a warm summer/fall day you can usually see gliders overhead, which take off from the nearby air field.
