How can these people charge money for a course like this?

I have played 10 different courses this year and this by far is the worse course I have played. I don't think anyone has a clue how a course is supposed to look. What chemicals are supposed to be used, or if they even care. The rough was thick and long, the fairways were brown, with crab grass and long. Someone mowed the fairways with half the mowing blades low and the other high, so it looks and played terrible. I mean, it was aweful. What are they doing there? I can't begin to tell you how terrible it was. I am about to call them and ask them what is going on? This place used to be a nice course. The rough has always played long and thick so I expected it but the greens and tees and fairways were horrible. They are ruining a good course because there is no effort being put forth or lack of knowledge about how to use chemicals.

Bugs and Power Lines

Played the West-East courses. Each of them had potential but had major flaws.

First, it was very buggy all over the course. Bring a lot of bug guard if you find yourself there - I had to re-apply twice.

Second, the condition left a lot to be desired. The course doesn't really have a fairway, more like light rough and thick rough. The thick rough was very lush and would grab a club. The light rough is more like a backyard - very patchy and inconsistent. Tee boxes were full of dandelion stems that were not mowed either. Greens were rock hard, grainy, and slow. Most of them were also very patchy from ball marks that were not fixed or signs of disease in the grass. Not good for this time of the season.

But why I really knocked this course down to 2-star was the quirks of the course. This was clearly supposed to be some kind of housing development with a golf course, and there are some houses on/around it, but in the dumbest spots. Some have nets guarding them because they are either right behind the green or stray too far into the line of fire on holes. You have to be on something to think it's a good idea to build on some of these spots, let alone buy one. But the West 9 is the major problem - power lines are in play on 3 holes. You tee off through them on 5, hit your approach through them coming back on 6, and then on 7 they run adjacent to the fairway on the right side the entire length of the hole. The pole was maybe 20 yards from the flag on 6. This is again a very stupid design flaw that disqualifies the course from being taken seriously in my opinion.

So when you add it all up, I know the area is a bit of a black hole for golf between Bloomington and French Lick, but there has to be something, anything better to spend your money on around there. I won't be back to try the other 9.

Enforce not fixing ball marks, not collared shirts

Pro shop staff threatened to make me leave if I didn't wear a collared shirt. I obliged. Once on the course I fixed at least 3 ball marks on every green plus my own. I think they need to change their policy to outlaw those who do not fix ball marks as opposed to those who wear nice, solid colored Columbia T-Shirts (that fix their marks). Seems like they value those who dress spiffy and disgrace the game more than those who dress reasonably and have great respect for the course and the game.

Experienced Greenskeeper Needed: Apply Online

There is a word I hate to use when reviewing a course; that word is "potential." The fairways are a virtual lost and found department. Don't bother hitting it straight. Your chances of finding your ball are not good on or off the fairway. No worries though, you will find some. Never yours but if you're like me and play cheap balls, you'll come home with upgrades. I like the layout, the staff and I got a Golfnow Hotdeal so the price was fair.

Like the cut !

I was pleased in the way the fairways were cut, with the rough having a 1st and 2 nd cut,.

The greens were great, some what hard and fast but fair, they to had two cuts of grass surrounding the green.

The cuts of grass in these areas made it easier for me, not to be so down on myself and aloud me to have a better chance on my next shot for only being off the mark at times.

Excellent round...golf

Stonecrest has a lot to offer. First, it has 27 holes so you need to come here more than once to get the full experience. You can make big numbers here, as there is plenty of water and trouble, but lots of opportunity as well. It's a remote location and during the week the course is generally not crowded, the pace of play is fine. There are a few holes here that will test the very best players if played from the back tees. The greens put true and have subtle breaks that force you to pay attention to the lay-of-the-land. There are at least a dozen lakes you can get it wet in, so take enough balls.

First time at Stone Crest-Will become my go-to course

Played here for my first time today. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The course has 27 holes, 3 nine hole courses. I played the East and North courses (recommended by the staff) since they are the 2 harder of the 3. The course was in good condition. Fairways and tee boxes were a little rough in spots, but it is April in Indiana. Overall, given the early spring date, the course is in very good condition. The greens were fairly fast, but held shots from 6 iron and shorter. The greens are very large and undulating, creating challenging 2-putts on some. The course was wide-open in terms of pace of play. This course is a gem that is a bit hidden as it's off the beaten path. I prefer it over IU and the Pointe in the Bedford/Bloomington area. I can't wait to see the course once June & July roll around.

Generally a 10 handicap. Shot 39 on East course and 41 on North Course. North is a good test. If you play East as front 9 and North as back 9, be prepared for a really tough finishing hole. I hit driver/wedge to green. Next time it will be 3-wood or 4-iron off tee and 8-iron in. On this hole, there's a premium for a dead-straight drive.

All-in-all I'd give it an overall score of 8/10. I'm betting by summer it will be a 9/10 factoring in condition/pace/cost/difficulty. If I thought I'd play more than 20 rounds there over the course of the playing season, I'd definitely join. Give this course a try if you're looking for a course around the Bloomington area. You won't be disappointed.

Greens are very challenging

Stone Crest is a course that will make you sweat. The greens on the East Course and the West Course may be big, but they are full of shelves, plateaus, and slopes that make them very challenging indeed. I played on a very warm day, but the greens were still soft and very fast. Unfortunately, the fairways and rough are choked with crabgrass.

Check this track out!

This is a fun and challenging course. The greens and fariways are well-maintained, and there is consistency, pace-wise, from green-to-green. There are 27 holes--- three distinct 9s, which each have their own "personalities-"-- and each provides distinct challenges. There are great risk-reward holes, as well as holes that will challenge the average golfer's accuracy and course-management skills. Play it once. I guarantee you'll be back.

this course is great

we played the North course fist. the greens were in very good shape. the only problem we had was hole 5, we had to play through the water sprinklers. we seen an employee just drive by like there was nothing wrong. oh well it was a hot day and the water felt pretty good! we played the West course next. great fairways and greens. the play was a little slow. I will be playing here again for sure.
