Good Value
Played with my wife 10/11/26 since we were in Midland for a Soccer Tournament.
The West course is their championship layout. It was nice, Very secluded. No home on the course and plenty of room between holes. For some reason the course was empty on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon
.
Conditions: The conditions were fine. Greens rolled well and were pretty fast for late afternoon in October, a bit soft for my taste. The sheer volume of ball marks says more about the clientele than the greens keeper. I tried to repair three or four per hole but left a ton. The fairways were clearly defined. Tee boxes were very beat up but flat. Overall it was good conditions but you can tell it gets a lot of play.
Layout: Classic no-frills layout. It set up really nicely for my eye from the Blue tee box. There were some interesting risk/reward opportunities out there too. Not a ton of trouble preventing relatively straight hitters to try to reach par 5s or short par 4s. There were no 90 degree doglegs but a lot of the holes did bend just enough to make you think about shot shape and hugging one side off the tee. The last par 3 was really pretty into the afternoon sun all carry over a pond and slightly downhill. Jerry Matthews loves to put target bunkers out there to define the landing zones and I like that. Found a few and the sand was really nice, firm enough for a ball to roll a bit but wedges cut through like butter.
Amenities/Property: The clubhouse is very nice but there is a lot of congestion in the parking lot. There’s a ton of kids around too since they also have a pitch and putt course and a throwaway 9. The practice area was nice. I did have to switch carts between nines because ours wouldn’t reliably start and took like 20 pedal pushes to kick over. Maybe a fluke. Coming up number 9 you get a really nice view of the beautiful clubhouse behind the green.
For me…it feels like a B tier Up North course. Nice but not a first choice…you can see the Jerry Mathew’s styling and shape and appreciate the bunkering and strategy, but it lacks that extra polish that I’m sure it had when it was newer. Bunker edges, crisp fairway-to-rough definition. The little bit of extra stuff isn’t there to make it an A tier.
All that being said, I’m glad I played there. The price was $63 at 2:30 pm which is good these days. No complaints there. I If I lived nearby I’m sure this would be in my regular rotation to play. You won’t be disappointed by the golf and there are 5 sets of tees to give everyone the experience they want. Solid value
Great conditions
Keeping up on leaves during the day is very helpful. Greens are fast had the coarse practicly to ourselves. Grounds guys are doing a great job. Bring your own snacks cuz club house only has drinks.
Up north feel for in town course
All was good except some (especially the par 3) tee boxes were really beat up. Need a sand container on those tees so golfers can fill their divots.
Great Course
This course is in excellent condition. Fairways were tightly mowed, the rough as lush and fully grown in no bare spots. Greens are fantastic, on the quicker side, just as they should be! Pace of play was definitely on the slow side. I’ve heard that about this place, but that’s because it’s popular and does get a lot of play. I definitely recommend this place and I will be back for sure!
Love this course
This is my local course so I'm probably a bit partial. But I love everything about the course. The hole layouts, the staff, the course care.
Tee and wildlife
It’s a great layout and you see all kinds of wildlife while playing..
First time back in several years
My wife and I used to live in Midland and played Currie West often. Took a shot at it again. The only reason we can't rate a 5 were their golf carts. They are very dates, very slow, constantly backfired and left us feeling they would die at any moment. They didn't but we left questioning if pricing was justified.
Great condition, greens were fast and true
First time playing again in decades. Was really surprised with the condition. Tons of tee boxes and the blacks played over 7,000 yards. Will be back
Nice muni course for the money
Challenging layout for beginners, yet very playable. The pace of play is questionable at times but overall a great course for the money!
