Worth Looking Into
I've driven by Ashland Country Club dozens of times...I used drive from Omaha to Lincoln to visit my parents or golf with a buddy who used to lived in northeast Lincoln...I liked driving the curvy and hilly Hwy 6 instead of I-80. I always wanted to play the course, so I did yesterday.
The staff (pro shop and snack bar) were very nice and welcoming. The employee in the pro shop asked if I'd played there before, and when I said no, he took me through where the practice green is, where the first tee is, and he told me that there was nobody behind me for a few hours so I could putt for a while if I wanted. I went over to the snack bar to get a water and a beer, and the girls working there were very friendly...big smiles, "how are you?", etc... Nice.
The course was not in the kind of shape I had hoped...lots of weeds in fairways, multiple instances of cart paths that were broken or buckling, the tee boxes were really dried out and hard to put tees into. For the most part, being in the fairway offered a good lie. Some parts in the rough were very dried out and tough to hit off of. It's been pretty dry lately, though...so not much you can do about that.
The layout of the course was better than I had expected. From Hwy 6, the course looks like kind of a dinky short course. Not the case. There were only a few holes that had a straight-away design. Most holes required draws and fades with driver because of the doglegging and tightness of the fairways. I played like absolute garbage at Ashland, so I wasn't going to score well no matter how easy or tough the course was...but if I had my A game, the course wouldn't be a pushover.
Now for my favorite part...the greens. The course designer got very creative with the greens. The course sits among fields of farmland and has very little elevation change. They went all out on the greens...most over them are built up with mounding, have a ton of undulation (especially 10...that green is insane!) and best of all, the greens were soft and receptive. They rolled a little on the slow side, but if you're in any kind of a drought, you water the greens and you keep them a little shaggy. They've done an excellent job with the greens at Ashland.
Full disclosure...I only played 15 holes. I came up to a very slow foursome (I played as a single) on 15 and had to be back in Omaha by 5, so I picked up after hitting my tee shot on 15 and headed back to my car.
All in all, I'm glad I played the course. If I were an Ashland resident, I'd play there often. Living in Omaha, Ashland CC is probably not a course that I'm going to drive (30 min) to play very often. However, I definitely want to play it again when we've gotten a little more rain...could be a good place to play during a Husker home game this fall.
Fun course!!
Course was great!! Will definitely play again ;)
NICE PLACE TO LEARN THE GAME
The course is pretty straight forward and had a lot of couples playing together which was good to see. The pro shop could have done much better job pairing folks together to avoid singles playing on a holiday. We were paired with another Golf Now player who decided to not even talk to us and teed off alone as the pro shop watched out the window, was probably the single cause for slow play as he played the back tees and many times struggled to reach the woman's front tees.
Bang for Buck....
I played 18 w/ a cart for $15! It was well worth the money. Would have been happy paying $30. Nice course! Old 9 (front), New 9 (back). Would recommend playing from the back tees if you're a decent golfer. The course is pretty short from the mid tees. Greens were in great shape! They roll true and you can make some putts. Very few straight holes. Front is narrow with trees lining the fairway. Back is more modern with undulating greens.
Good layout, questionable conditions
The layout was nice. Staff was friendly, helpful. I didn't play great and it was 95 degrees but it was worth the drive down there. The tee boxes were really dry and hard to get tee in the ground which bugged me especially when the bugs were swarming on a 95 degree day. (should have brought bug spray) But I had a good time. I wish the tee boxes were in better shape, it was just extremely hard to get the tee in the ground. The greens aren't receptive, unfortunately I wasn't striking the ball well either so I am not blaming the greens for my bad play but it wasn't easy to land them out there. I think they need to water it more then they do, but only playing it one time doesn't give me the best knowledge of whether it was the heat or if it is an ongoing issue they have. For the value I can't complain, it's worth the trip, bring bug spray. The best thing about the course is the layout.
Great day
Fun course, great value! Thank you!
Taken care of, average course
Played on a pretty cool/cloudy day. Course was not busy because of the weather so I flew through 18 holes in 2 and a half hours. Good course for beginners or those looking for something simple.
Pros:
-Taken care of
-Friendly staff
-Bar and pool (although I did not use them. Bar area seems updated recently)
Cons:
-Helicopter seeds all over some of the greens. Hard for them to keep up on them this time of year I suppose.
-Very flat, fairways are really close to each other.
-Some of the bunkers seemed to have drainage issues and were some big puddles in them.
will play again
I have played this course several times and it is always a good outing. Will be back.
A Nice Value
I always find this course to be a pretty decent value and it's pretty easy to get on. This time around the course itself was in decent shape. Some of the tee boxes have really gathered a lot of weeds, but it's not a major problem. I did find the ground to be especially hard in places as well (as another reviewer stated).
The rough was especially thick today and it adds a level of difficulty ... especially around the greens. Most of the greens were in good shape, but overall the back was a bit more rough than the front. The greens overall ran pretty true, but there were a few trumped up pin locations.
There was some standing water on the course as it appeared to be over-watered in places and the sprinklers were still running on those holes.
In summary, this is a nice little getaway that one can usually get on with short notice. Nothing ultra special, but it's not easy yet not overly hard ... fair.
nice value
the value of the GolfNow tee time was reasonable for this course. would buy it again.
Not impressed
Just not that satisfied with the course this last sunday 9/13. Ground hard, not in good shape, Not worth the money or drive from Omaha.
Jerky golfers
Course is ok, good bargain. Some jerk with his girlfriend kept driving in to us. Annoying.
Pace of play issues
Maybe it was aberration but literally left the course due to pace issues.
Mike,
I'm sorry to hear about your pace of play issues. Saturday, August 29th was an extremely busy day, one of the busiest of the year! We hope you come back and see us again soon.
Great course, greens a bit disappointing
I've only played this course twice now. The 1st time the greens were super fast which i love so I came back a 2nd time. i couldn't believe how slow they were this time. I asked the pro shop after the round and they said they haven't been mowed for 2 days because of rain. I'm not sure why they couldn't mow, but either way it was disappointing. The course in general is in very good shape and you can't beat the value for what you get.
It is our policy to mow our greens every day. The greens were very soft due to huge amounts of rain. As a result of this we were not able to put a mower on the greens because the tires would leave ruts and tracks in the greens. I apologize for the lack of consistency, unfortunately mother nature doesn't always cooperate with what we would like to accomplish.
A nice course between Lincoln and Omaha
I found a deal for my wife and I on Golf Now for a Friday afternoon. The course is lush, green and in good shape. Several areas are extremely wet but that is expected because of all the rain we have had recently. I don't think the grounds keeper could do anything about that.
There are a couple of interesting holes, 13 and 14, you tee off on both before you play the par 3 13th.
The course wasn't busy so the pace was nice and the staff was nice and accommodating.
slow greens
Overall course was nice. Tough fairways. Slow greens!
friendly pro shop
great deal for money...pro shop guys were fantastic....excellent course....will be back
Saturday afternoon round
Good course for a good rate. How can you complain about a 3 hour 18 hole round on a Saturday afternoon!!
Good deal
Good value for the price in this part of the state,
Thank you for the honest review. We really appreciate it!
