A Texas golf landmark: The Battleground at Deer Park near Houston celebrates 20 years

DEER PARK, Texas -- Opened in 1996, the Battleground golf course at Deer Park remains one of the better values in the Houston area.

Located just east of the city in the heart of the area's oil-and-gas production, this municipal golf course has served Deer Park and surrounding communities for two decades with a golf course that measures nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees.

With water on half the holes and usually a prevailing breeze from the south, it's anything but easy, although the par 5s are short and represent birdie opportunities.

The Battleground at Deer Park has excellent stand-alone practice facilities that include a range, short-game area and three-hole practice course available for a nominal fee.

The large clubhouse features a well stocked golf shop and excellent restaurant and banquet facilities.

So maybe you've got a long weekend or three afternoons during the week in Houston and about $200 to spend on golf. Not a problem, because $200 goes a long way in the Bayou City, and best of all, there's more than 100 courses from which to choose. All but one of them can be played for less than $100. So with that in mind, let's set our goals a little modestly. Choosing just three courses isn't easy, but my picks don't take you too far out of town, fit well within budget and are courses that say Houston all over them.
