Classic Donald Ross: Historic golf at the Omni Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods in New Hampshire

BRETTON WOODS, N.H. -- There are 27 holes at Omni Mount Washington Resort, and all of them have plenty of history.

The 18-hole championship layout, Mount Washington Golf Course, is a classic Donald Ross design that dates back to 1915. The 7,004-yard, par-72 course is surrounded by Mount Washington, the Presidential Mountain Range, Crawford Notch and the historic Omni Mount Washington Resort.

It was meticulously returned to Ross's original intent by architect Brian Silva with the re-discovery of fairway bunkers perpendicular to the line of play, including the signature "Principal's Nose" style bunker on the fourth hole.

Silva also incorporated Ross's "meadowland design" by strategically removing trees to enhance wide-open vistas and made use of natural rolls and swells of the ancient riverbed beneath the course for the placement of tees, fairways, bunkers and greens.

Omni Mount Washington Resort's Mount Pleasant Course, a nine holer, is even older, having first opened in 1895. It is a par 35, running 3,215 yards alongside the Ammonoosuc River. A little tighter than the Mount Washington Course, it was restored and upgraded by Cornish & Silva Golf Course Architects in 1989.
