Glasgow Hills Resort and Golf Club among the most challenging golf courses on Prince Edward Island

HUNTER RIVER, Prince Edward Island, Canada -- Designed by Les Furber, Glasgow Hills Resort and Golf Club is one of the island's most challenging plays.

The design's difficulty comes in a layout that is seldom flat, rather rolling up and down along some of the island's highest ground. The golf course can stretch to over 6,900 yards from the championship tees.

Most of the front side plays along high ground, including a very scenic par-4 first hole that plays out towards the coast.

While the back nine begins with a couple shorter par 4s, it gets difficult in the middle with the par-3 13th that plays 240 yards and requires a carry over a creek. That is followed by a long par 5 with plenty of trouble, and even a potential blind shot from the right half of the fairway. The course's closing hole is no slouch either, playing a long, par 4 dogleg right with plenty of bunkers to find along the way.

Opened in 2001, Glasgow Hills is one of the newest golf courses on PEI. The clubhouse is one of the best, too, and serves its patrons with complimentary local mussels after the round in the bar. The deck overlooks the course and ocean in the distance, so it's certainly one of the more pleasant 19th holes on the island.

There are no accommodations on site, but there are plenty of options in the nearby resort town of Cavendish, or about 30 minutes by car from the capital of Charlottetown.
