Short but sweet defines golf at The Bay Pointe Club in Onset, Massachusetts

ONSET, Mass. -- At 101 yards, the seventh hole at Bay Pointe Club is easily one of the shortest signature holes in golf.

There's nothing easy about making par, though. There's no margin for error. Weeds and water surround the island green. Two front bunkers squeeze the narrow front portion of an odd-shaped green.

This signature shot symbolizes the whole Bay Pointe experience. The 6,201-yard par-70 routing might play short (thanks to six par 3s), but it's still fun and interesting at the same time.

Bay Pointe, ideally located on the edge of the Upper portion of Cape Cod nearest the mainland, attracts players looking for a good time. There are no homes spoiling its rolling fairways. A unique mix of long and short holes might allow a birdie one moment, then steal the strokes right back.

Consider the opening par 5, which plays a mere 481 yards long, followed by the healthy 465-yard par-4 second hole, the no. 1 handicap, as a perfect example of this scoring yo-yo. Or there's the three-hole stretch centered around the scenic seventh hole. The sixth hole, a drivable 283-yard par 4, feels only slightly longer than the 227-yard par-3 eighth. A trio of threes would be nice at holes 7-9, although three fours remain the more likely outcome on the scorecard.
