I recently played Del Monte for the first time. After playing this course, I would strongly recommend anyone visiting the Monterey area to play this course. It has an amazing layout with pristine greens, fairways and tee boxes. The layout provides all golf levels the chance to hit challenging shots all while giving you a chance to recover if you hit a bad shot. The greens are at a perfect speed and roll true to the line. Staff was very friendly and wanted to ensure we had a fun and enjoyable visit. One of the most enjoyable courses I have played and I will defiantely play this course again.

I really enjoyed playing this course. The small greens made it challenging at times. The course was fair. I was never penilized for hitting a good shot (except for hole 13 when I hit what I thought was a great drive only to find my ball behind a tree). I can't wait to play it again.

I played twilight to keep fees down. A great value considering some of the green fees in the area. Nice course, great facility, great lay out. A lot of history. Classic design. I think the cart was brand new. no GPS but yardage markers everywhere. I loved it. I'll be back.

Always loved this course now that it's on golf now it should be more accessible at value prices. The course conditions and staff are what you would expect from a course in the pebble beach system,excellent. Really enjoyed the day because the course was empty on Wednesday because all the locals play in the twilight tournament at 3 so this might be an ideal day to sneak away from work.

Some nice elements of links golf come to life at Spanish Bay - spectacular ocean views, natural dunes and firm-and-fast conditions. But it's easy to see why golfers sometimes come off the course grumbling. When the wind picks up or the weather gets gnarly - which happens on the Monterey Peninsula - it's a ball-gobbling and scorecard-trashing menace. That doesn't mean it can't be fun. I had a blast playing in a ferocious afternoon wind. My threesome just came to grips with the fact that scores would soar like a balloon. It's a target test of golf, which isn't the norm for a true links. Wetlands and environmental areas force an aerial game and precise shot-making on holes 8, 12, 13, 15, 17 and 18. Wild, unnatural slopes make putting a challenge even in purest sunshine. The best way to enjoy Spanish Bay is to put aside the comparisons to Pebble Beach or Spyglass Hill and don't fret about your game. Just look around and breathe in the fresh air. It's got some of the greatest sights and sounds in golf. Between the crashing surf, rocky coastline, scraggly dunes and twisted trees and hearing the bagpipes at dusk, Spanish Bay sells a great experience at nearly 50 percent off the cost of a round at Pebble Beach.

Del Monte - the oldest course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi - often gets left off the rotation when golfers visit Pebble Beach Resorts. It isn't located on the resort's main footprint, and therefore, isn't on the water like Pebble Beach, Spanish Bay and Spyglass Hill. But it also costs half as much to play and is kept in good condition. It's a hoot to play, roaming through a neighborhood adjacent to a Hyatt hotel. Since the routing maxes out at 6,300 yards, it's a more relaxing round that takes less time to play. It's not easy, by any means. The bunkers have steep edges. Many of the holes feature a subtle charm. Maybe there's a nice dogleg or elevated green or semi-blind tee shot to keep things interesting. It's hard to walk off Del Monte without smiling.

Go back in time and play a course the way golf was meant to be played - fast and enjoyable. Del Monte Golf Course, built in 1897, is a hidden gem in downtown Monterey that I have been playing since 1994 when I moved to the area. The staff is always friendly, course always in great shape and pace of play is phenomenal. I would recommend playing Del Monte on any trip to the Monterey Peninsula.

Cannot describe the beauty of the course, most of the holes were along the ocean. Spectacular condition on fairway, green. Staff was very nice and food was excellent.

Would replay this course the next time I am in Monterey

A beautiful course! Fortunately it is a public course and anyone can play the course. A well maintained course considering its age.

There's nothing overly flashy about the Peter Hay, the nine-hole, par-3 course at Pebble Beach Resorts. Most of the holes play between 75 and 100 yards. It's a great spot to warm up your wedge game for the bigger challenges. The greens are small and protected by the same style of bunkers as Pebble Beach Golf Links. Locals enjoy playing the loop since it's affordable ($30) and family-friendly. I teed it up with my 12-year-old son, who hadn't played all summer. He still made a par and came away happy with the experience. It's an easy walk, and there are glimpses of Stillwater Cove through the trees. It's location is ideal right across the street from the new Pebble Beach Golf Academy and just a short shuttle ride down the hill from Pebble Beach.

I'm not writing a review. It's five-star everything. I can't say anything more than everyone else has for the last almost 100 years.

I've been lucky enough to play Pebble Beach twice - in June of 2003 and December of 2009 - and the memories of those rounds are still vivid in my head. I think that's the ultimate sign of a 'bucket list' experience. Both times I walked the course without a caddie, carrying my own bag. I was lucky to get sunny days with little wind. I feel bad for those people who sign up for a once-in-a-lifetime round and get blasted with wind or rain or a thick marine layer that clouds the ocean views. It can happen to anybody. As for the course, it takes two holes to shake off the excited nerves. That's about the time the magic happens. The fourth through 10th holes roam along the rocky cliffs of the coast. The scenery is just off the charts, but I think it's the variety of holes that's even more special. The tee shot at the short seventh and the scary approach shot at no. 8 are epic moments in any golf career. Execute them properly and you can brag about them forever. The inland holes of the back nine take some grief from critics, although they're all solid holes. I think the par-3 17th is actually a bit overrated. It's almost impossible to hit the hour-glass-shaped green unless you're a single digit handicap, and there's not much scenery until you reach the green. I'm in the camp that believes the two trees in the landing area of the 18th fairway should be removed, but regardless, it's still a great hole. Everybody, no matter how rich or poor, should play Pebble Beach. It's a special day from start to finish.

The place is a money grab! Living off its reputation. The course was is poor condition for the money charged. They do not appear to have a dress code or if they do, they do not enforce it! Played with to people that tee'd off with there shirts untucked and had zero golf etiquette.Do yourself a favor go to Bandon, Pinehurst, Whistling Straits or TPC Sawgrass where you are welcomed by folkes who appear to genuinely appreciate your business. If you want to see the views of Pebble Beach Golf Links nothing stops one from walking the course. This is the first review I have ever posted on any site, but felt so ripped off at the entire golf experince I felt the need to post.

I understand why people prefer Spyglass Hill (it is, after all, one of the world's greatest courses in its own right), but that doesn't justify the criticism that goes Spanish Bay's way. It's a beautiful course, and anyone with a soft place in their heart for links courses must play it.

It's also a good warmup for Pebble; the fairways are not quite as wide as Pebble, but the greens are a fair bit bigger (anyone who has played the RTJ Trail in Alabama will recognize them), and the views are just as spectacular. I played Spanish Bay the day before I played Pebble, and it definitely helped ease my nerves.

Also, shoot for an afternoon tee time so that you can time your finish with the bagpiper who plays up at the clubhouse patio every evening at sunset. Tremendous way to finish a day.

There's nothing I can add to Pebble Beach's heaps of praises, all of which are well deserved. It's a magical experience. The two things that I must emphasize are these: walk, and hire a caddie. This is arguably the world's most beautiful golf course; why anyone would want to ride in a cart on it is beyond me. Pebble Beach is an experience, and to be properly experienced, it must be walked. Likewise, a caddie is going to improve your experience by saving you TONS of shots (mine probably saved me 10 strokes), carrying your bag, cleaning your clubs, raking the bunkers, and otherwise making your round hassle-free.

One last thought about caddies: not all caddies are created equal. I got lucky with a spectacular, insightful, funny caddie named Crawford. My playing partners got a forecaddie who was not nearly as excited to be there. So if you know anyone who's been to Pebble, ask who caddied for them. If they recommend him/her, ask for that person in particular.

If I go back, I'm asking for Crawford.

Leave your ego in the car and embrace the challenge. Toughest course you can play in Pebble Beach. The whole course is a visual treat but intimidating. Awesome Greens, fun challenge

Fabulous experience. Have someone walk with you to enjoy the walk. Forget the score and savor the experience. Awesome!

To be honest, the green fee of $270 is quite steep, and somehow it's still only around half the price of pebble beach. If pebble and spyglass are out of reach, the Links at Spanish Bay is the best 3rd option possible! I can only wonder how spyglass and pebble are possibly better, but I do not regret playing Spanish for a second. The way the rolling grass blends into the sand dunes is already beautiful, then tack on the views, the course conditions, and the difficult yet playable aspects of this track and it's a head-scratcher why they do not host a PGA Tour event here. There isn't much room between the fairways and natural dunes and the course is a little short for tour standards, but it is still a gem. The entire course is full of signature holes, especially the start of the front and the entire back. I took about 30 pictures on my phone, but when I tried showing them to my family and friends, the pictures just could not give the course justice. Now if you can actually focus on golf, the course features pristine fairways, tight fringes, great bunkers, and the best greens you could possibly find. The greens were very quick and extremely undulating (more than Kapalua Plantation from personal experience), but they rolled so well that I felt I could make anything (I actually rolled in a 70 footer and several 10-30 footers). The staff was very helpful and our caddie, Steve, knew the layout like the back of his hand and he was a very sociable guy. We all know the hype surrounding pebble beach and spyglass hill, but the links at Spanish Bay are definitely worth a go for any golfer!

Everybody knows about Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill. I recently played all three. While Pebble is unforgettable and Spyglass is the toughest course of the three, Spanish Bay was perhaps the most enjoyable overall round. The course has a beautiful links layout that winds through the dunes. It is challenging but accessible. The greens have amazing contours. Good luck if you hit it on the wrong level. Pace of play is great because many fewer people play than at Spyglass and Pebble. I would highly recommend it to anybody coming to Monterey. Paying for a caddie is well worth the price because your round will be more enjoyable.

Are you a fan of golf? If so, you NEED to play Pebble! The course is simply wonderful and while pricy, is absolutely worth the high rate. Played 18 with one of my best friends and will never forget the experience.

Course conditions were excellent and even though they were getting ready for the Pro-am, it did not change the overall experience.
