Guys trip
Great course, we played in a Tuesday at 11:00 and had the course to ourselves. I do suggest that if you tend to spray your drives a little from time to time, don't use a yellow ball like I did, they blend in with the wild flowers too well. Happy hacking everyone!!
Del Monte Review
Beautiful golf course. Tight fairways throughout the course. Worth the money.
Sour grapes
I know, I know, I know...
Golf magazine top... Golf digest top ...
Ok, I played on a picture perfect day. And, played the course relatively well compared to what others have told me when they played. From the start, everybody there is very cordial and friendly. Even other players are friendly and giddy about playing this iconic course. The course condition was average (great tight fairways, but the greens were bumpy and slower than I anticipated). Edges were rough and I didn't care for the construction and temporary green on #14. The greens were truly smaller than I had expected even after seeing on TV and in person through ProAm and US Open. So, why only four stars? The price. Face it, the staff is friendly because they're picking your pocket left and right. $495 for green fee, $80 for caddy, $35 - $50 caddy tip, $4 bottle of water... Money just pours out as soon as you step on the property. I've played Pelican Hills (both South and North), Torrey Pines (both South and North), Trump National, Monarch Beach and other iconic courses in SoCal area so my expectation may have been higher. But, other courses didn't gauge you for every little thing. I enjoyed playing as this is an iconic course. But, I'll spend my green fees at other courses that are just as fun and just as scenic.
Great stay and play
Love staying at the Hyatt and playing this old school course, very challenging and beautiful views.
Why am I surprised
Never played this course before.... Super happy I did. Course condition was equal to a Spyglass or Spanish Bay. Great deal on golfnow.com made the one day trip from Santa Rosa all worth it. Love playing on the Monterey peninsula and this course gives you a less expensive option to the Pebbles and Spyglass of the world.
Awesome Experience!
First the technical aspects of playing Pebble Beach. The course is in fantastic shape tee to green as expected. Greens are small but very manageable. In my opinion they are much easier than Blackhorse & Bayonet down the road. Of course having a caddie give you spot on reads helps. Course is a must walk in my book. That gives you time to enjoy the plentiful views. Speaking of time... It's going to be a 5 hour round. Just accept that. You just paid five bills so why would you want to rush it. Having said that the caddies do a good job keeping players moving along.
The course layout combined with the ocean views is just absolutely surreal. You are right on the waters edge on 6-8 holes and have views of the ocean on another 5-6 holes.
We had no issues with staff. All were professional and polite
If I had one complaint it would be lack of bathrooms.
I'm already making plans to play it again in the summer!
Great course and memorable holes
First time I played the course I thought it to be the best of the courses at Pebble Beach. The last time I played it will be ranked as number one of all the course. While Pebble had the views and name, and a definite bucket list. Spyglass Hill has the best layout, challenge and different shot requirements.
make my day
Probably best in the US Public, though I haven't been to Bandon yet. the middle stretch of holes is just too good and 18 is a real treat. Felt like Clint Eastwood
Good quality course
This is a challenging course, though fairly flat and too easy (with a slightly wild shot ) to end up on another fairway.
It is beautifully maintained with tough greens which are all different and interesting.
The pace was good and hopefully we will get to play again one day.
Not a typical PB owned course
Even though this is a Pebble Beach owned course.....don't set your expectations to high. Course overall is in great shape. Fairways green and tight. Greens fast and true. Weather was wet and rainy but course was fun. There are other courses in the area that offer much more for the same price tag.
Relaxing Course
Not the most challenging course, and not particularly long even from the tips, but overall a fun course. The greens had just been sanded, and it had rained earlier so the greens were very soft and receptive, but also led to them being a little bumpy in places. The fairways were in great shape, and the rough for the most part was lush and a beast! Seriously, was deep in most places. Bunkers were in great condition even with it having rained. Also on the good news was that I didn't see any "burned out" areas, especially on the par 3s. Rough was a little sparse in a few places, but not in a way that really impacted play. I'd probably play again, but only if I got a hot deal. Also, remember, there is only a putting green and a small chipping area, no range.
A Bucketlist Must
First off I'll address the issues of tough greens and cart path only comments others talked about. The greens are firm and fast just like ALL top notch golf courses. I found them easier than Black Horse down the road. Courses in the Pebble area are designed to be walked not ridden (the exception is MPCC). By keeping carts off the fairways it helps keep the course in pristine condition.
Yes holes 1-5 steal the show! Think of Spyglass as part Pebble and part Poppy Hills. Even though the back 9 is in the forest the holes still offer plenty of fun elevation challenges with some water hazards thrown in for beauty.
Pace of play at courses like this are designed to be in the 4.5-5 hour range so plan for it and bring your camera. You'll want to take plenty of pictures
Clubhouse could use a remodel.
Long and Short
This course is challenging with long par 5s and elevated greens, making the short game more important. Putting surfaces are also challenging!
Greens are wicked!
Even though this is a Pebble Beach course, do not expect it to be anything like their other properties. It is not nearly as well kept as the others, but that doesn't mean it is not tough. The layout is old style (being built in the 1800's), but they have made the greens extremely challenging. Many are small greens and many are multi-tiered. They had just aerated the greens the day before we played, but it did not matter--they were true and fast! Make sure you've practiced your putting before coming here! Overall a good course, but there are better in Monterey County for less money.
!st time
Tough to find if u put in Course address on an I phone,,use the name of the course,,,
Fairways pretty brown in a lot of locations,,greens fast and difficult,,Stay below the hole
Nice course in Monterey
Played Del Monte for the first time on 6/18 and enjoyed the course. Conditions were good, greens were fast and true. A couple long holes, especially par 3s. The starter accommodated me getting off 30 minutes early, however, this was due to no warm-up area/driving range. Come prepared to putt and chip for a few minutes then start.
Friendly Staff
We had a great round at the Del Monte Golf Course. My husband and I were just a twosome and had no problem with the pace of play. The marshall came by and checked on us. The staff were very friendly and treated us well. We will be back again.
Good, reliable track
I play here on a regular basis, but have never wrote a review. Del Monte is the oldest course west of the Mississippi and used during the Pebble Beach ProAm. The staff is great--it's nothing fancy and the greens are very large by today's standards. With all that said, it's a very nice local course, pretty well maintained. The tee boxes are always in good shape, as are the greens. I will say this time, however, the "fairways" on the par 3s were a nasty, burnt mess. Since there are a few 200+yard par 3s, I did end up in the burnt, nasty mess. Don't know why they aren't maintaining these. This is a great value, low pressure and part of the pebble beach properties...worth playing while you're here.
Old School Fun
Played on a nice sunny day with a bit of a sea breeze.Course seemed to play much longer then the stated yardage and our scores were well over our handicaps. Small greens are well bunkered and very tricky indeed.Generous fairways, just a nice old style course! We got an afternoon Hot Deal which is definately the way to go as green fees can be a little pricey.
