Good quality course
This is a challenging course, though fairly flat and too easy (with a slightly wild shot ) to end up on another fairway.
It is beautifully maintained with tough greens which are all different and interesting.
The pace was good and hopefully we will get to play again one day.
Not a typical PB owned course
Even though this is a Pebble Beach owned course.....don't set your expectations to high. Course overall is in great shape. Fairways green and tight. Greens fast and true. Weather was wet and rainy but course was fun. There are other courses in the area that offer much more for the same price tag.
Relaxing Course
Not the most challenging course, and not particularly long even from the tips, but overall a fun course. The greens had just been sanded, and it had rained earlier so the greens were very soft and receptive, but also led to them being a little bumpy in places. The fairways were in great shape, and the rough for the most part was lush and a beast! Seriously, was deep in most places. Bunkers were in great condition even with it having rained. Also on the good news was that I didn't see any "burned out" areas, especially on the par 3s. Rough was a little sparse in a few places, but not in a way that really impacted play. I'd probably play again, but only if I got a hot deal. Also, remember, there is only a putting green and a small chipping area, no range.
A Bucketlist Must
First off I'll address the issues of tough greens and cart path only comments others talked about. The greens are firm and fast just like ALL top notch golf courses. I found them easier than Black Horse down the road. Courses in the Pebble area are designed to be walked not ridden (the exception is MPCC). By keeping carts off the fairways it helps keep the course in pristine condition.
Yes holes 1-5 steal the show! Think of Spyglass as part Pebble and part Poppy Hills. Even though the back 9 is in the forest the holes still offer plenty of fun elevation challenges with some water hazards thrown in for beauty.
Pace of play at courses like this are designed to be in the 4.5-5 hour range so plan for it and bring your camera. You'll want to take plenty of pictures
Clubhouse could use a remodel.
Long and Short
This course is challenging with long par 5s and elevated greens, making the short game more important. Putting surfaces are also challenging!
Greens are wicked!
Even though this is a Pebble Beach course, do not expect it to be anything like their other properties. It is not nearly as well kept as the others, but that doesn't mean it is not tough. The layout is old style (being built in the 1800's), but they have made the greens extremely challenging. Many are small greens and many are multi-tiered. They had just aerated the greens the day before we played, but it did not matter--they were true and fast! Make sure you've practiced your putting before coming here! Overall a good course, but there are better in Monterey County for less money.
!st time
Tough to find if u put in Course address on an I phone,,use the name of the course,,,
Fairways pretty brown in a lot of locations,,greens fast and difficult,,Stay below the hole
Nice course in Monterey
Played Del Monte for the first time on 6/18 and enjoyed the course. Conditions were good, greens were fast and true. A couple long holes, especially par 3s. The starter accommodated me getting off 30 minutes early, however, this was due to no warm-up area/driving range. Come prepared to putt and chip for a few minutes then start.
Friendly Staff
We had a great round at the Del Monte Golf Course. My husband and I were just a twosome and had no problem with the pace of play. The marshall came by and checked on us. The staff were very friendly and treated us well. We will be back again.
Good, reliable track
I play here on a regular basis, but have never wrote a review. Del Monte is the oldest course west of the Mississippi and used during the Pebble Beach ProAm. The staff is great--it's nothing fancy and the greens are very large by today's standards. With all that said, it's a very nice local course, pretty well maintained. The tee boxes are always in good shape, as are the greens. I will say this time, however, the "fairways" on the par 3s were a nasty, burnt mess. Since there are a few 200+yard par 3s, I did end up in the burnt, nasty mess. Don't know why they aren't maintaining these. This is a great value, low pressure and part of the pebble beach properties...worth playing while you're here.
Old School Fun
Played on a nice sunny day with a bit of a sea breeze.Course seemed to play much longer then the stated yardage and our scores were well over our handicaps. Small greens are well bunkered and very tricky indeed.Generous fairways, just a nice old style course! We got an afternoon Hot Deal which is definately the way to go as green fees can be a little pricey.
WOW
This course is beyond amazing. The layout is great and the scenery is just incredible. The conditions are great and the course is absolutely FLAWLESS. Definitely a must-play.
Mixed reviews of Spanish Bay
I got an interesting perspective after my latest round playing Spanish Bay. Most of the golfers competing in the tournament I was a part of were high-handicappers. The wind and the target-style golf of Spanish Bay pummeled them relentlessly. A handful of players lost more than 10 balls; a few more than 20.
Obviously, most of the time Spanish Bay caters to diehard golfers on their bucket-list golf trip. In this case, these high-handicappers showed just how penal and unforgiving the course can be, even from the white tees we were playing. Almost every shot off line will be swallowed by dunes or trees on the higher holes of the back nine. The wetlands that you must carry will catch even the most talented players.
So, in summary, some members of the group thought it was the best golf course they have ever played after falling in love with the scenery. A smaller faction thought it was too difficult. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle where I sit. I appreciate Spanish Bay for its beauty and unique coastal setting, but I also have a few qualms about its design and the strategy of certain holes. But would I turn down another chance to play it? Never. I just hope next time it's in the morning before the wind kicks up.
True value on the peninsula
Outstanding greens and exceptional customer service. Definitely straight-forward, old style, but the challenge is still there, and the attention to detail makes this a sleeper value on the Monterey Peninsula! A must for every golf history buff.....
average experience for a golf course part of pebble beach brand
I was. not impress by the golf conditions, for the price I would play other courses in the area.
Beating the Rain
Got off a bit early to beat the rain. The course was in great condition with smooth sloping greens and challenging pins. Fun to play since rough is down, not many fairway bunkers and NO WATER hazards. Much improved since we've had some rain to green up the fairways.
This course was in excellent condition
Couldn't have picked a better day to play golf, everything was perfect. Love this course
Windy But Nice
First time playing this course. Got a great deal on golfnow and went down. Hardly anyone on the course so they let me out early, good thing the rains were coming. Very windy for the first nine, ball moved a couple of times when putting. Read some earlier reviews and didn't quite know what to think. The fairways were in very good shape as were the bunkers and the greens. 6 of the first 7 holes I played into the wind, wow I parred the No. 1 handicapped hole. Sun came out for the last 10 holes and the wind died down a little which made it a little easier. I put fair on the weather as it was very windy early on which made the course very tough. Club selection was tough against the wind and with it. I finished the round in 3 hours taking my time. Overall the course was in very good shape. Forgot to mention the tee boxes were also in great condition. The staff were very friendly and probably the only thing I can say negative about this course is that I think you are paying a higher price because it is Monterey. It is a course worth playing though so I do recommend this course. I will play it again if I get a good price.
had a good round
we came day after big rain, all was ok. carts stay on path meant slower play time. club house staff great and friendly. informative about course condition.
However, ground keepers walking on course while golfers on tee box not cool. heard rumors of found under ground water source and lake planning. we felt they could have found better time to make survey measurements.
