Top of the class
Both Firecliff and Mountain View are exceptional municipal courses. Likely the best you’ll ever play. Conditions are phenomenal year round, even during the “dog days” of summer. A must play in the valley.
Great Golf Course
Wow, spectacular course. The condition was amazing and the staff was friendly. I will go back.
Course was stressed
We play this course every time we come to Palm Springs. It's one of our favorite layouts. However with all the heat this year, the course was severely stressed. Greens were decent, but slow. Cart personnel and marshal's were top notch. Some of the best in the area. Cubhouse staff is never very friendly. Not sure why, but this always seems to be the case. Overall, a good experience and we'll continue to play here again.
Great course to play
This is a great course (they have two) to play, I highly recommend playing either course (Firecliff or Mountain).
Mountain View
Rode the Purple tees (6507/71.2/128) in slightly less than 3H as a single twilight. Sunny, breezy and around 112.
Bermuda tees were level, lush and reasonably well maintained for divots.
Bermuda fairways are lush and firm, good to play out of.
Bermuda rough was nice. Lush, mowed low and not overly penal.
Sand traps were well maintained with good quality sand.
Bermuda greens were good for middle of the summer. Medium speed, firm and held irons with minor run out.
Excellent customer service on every visit here. Nice GPS on the upgraded carts that have ports for electronics. No on course services, but plenty of ice/water stations on the course. Nice all grass driving range with a good chipping area & practice green. Conditions were pretty good considering the heat, definitely better than Firecliff today. Fun course, recommended.
Firecliff
Rode the Purple tees (6676/72.1/136) in 3H mid day on a GN Hot Deal. Clear, fairly calm and 112.
Bermuda tees were semi lush and level with few divots.
Bermuda fairways were semi lush and usually good to play from.
Bermuda rough was lush. The ball sat up, not much of a penalty and good to chip out of.
Waste bunkers were firm and not as well maintained as the greenside traps. Greenside traps had good quality sand and were very nicely maintained.
Bermuda greens putted medium speed and were firm in middle of the summer condition.
Customer Service always excellent here from when you drop your clubs off out front to when you pick them up after the round. No on course services with COVID-19, but they had ice/water stations every few holes. Nice GPS on upgraded carts that have ports for electronics. The all grass driving range is included and is excellent with a nice practice chipping area. Recommended, one of the best public courses in the Palm Springs area.
Fantastic Course
This is one of the best courses in the desert. You will use every club in your bag. Thoroughally enjoyable.
Best Public Course in the Desert- but the Greens?
I have played this course for 10+ Years. Well kept and beautiful. If you come to Palm Desert this is a must play. But what happened to the greens? They are hurting, maybe from COVID non care. I rate all my courses by how well the greens hold and roll. Greens are not well right now. I am certain they will get better. But don't ruin the beauty by letting the greens go.
Wide open fairways
Beautiful course. Wide open fairways, and there’s no real rough trees or water to discourage tee shots.
Great Course
This was a beautiful and challenging course. Staff was professional and the staff was following and really impressed us on their Covid-19 preparedness. The fairways were in great shape. Some of the greens were rough but I’m not complaining I highly recommend playing Desert Willow.
Ehhhh So So
Well, this was my first time playing this course. I heard a lot of really good things about it, so that made me really want to play it. Unfortunately, for me, it didn't live up to the hype. Just so so in my book. Greens have a disease on them and it made it very unfair. My ball would start hopping half way to the hole and whatever way the ball was breaking, the hop would cause about a ball width jump that direction. Kind of bummed. I don't think I'll be back to play here again.
Pace of play and condition of greens
Neither was up to the quality you would expect at a high end golf course. The Firecliff greens were parched and bumpy -- worse that any other greens I've played in the area this summer. Pace of play was very slow, which is common on weekends. It would have been over four hours for a 1pm tee off and 110 temperature.
Course condition was good, and it's a friendly experience. However, I live nearby and only play a couple of rounds a year due to these recurring issues. Caveat emptor.
Greens a little rough
The Firecliff course is probably the premier public course in the PS area, and normally I would rate a 5. However, the greens were in rough shape on this day. Looks like they were aerated a few weeks back and over fertilized. Anyway, there were burned out and thin areas on many of the greens. The greens on the Mountain View course were in much better shape. I would give the Firecliff a few more weeks to heal up before playing again.
I think the greens weren't great due to the fact that they did a 3/8 inch aerification from 6/22-6/25.
