Save yourself a trip and go somewhere else!
Not worth the money or the drive anymore…I’ve given the course multiple tries, at some points, steady business and I just hate to say I’ll never be going back… I used to play this course weekly but over the last 2 years (2023-present) it has just steadily been in decline and in some form of disrepair but a friend recently recommended the course so I figured I’d give it one last shot…so here’s the honest review…
Initially, about 2 yrs ago (early to mid ‘23), the greens all started to die and become infested with this black algae looking crust. The management and groundskeeping team never could seem to get them to recover and it honestly just seemed like nobody on staff knew what to do, or how to fix them so they stayed dead and crusty for a while…
Around the beginning of 2024, the course purchased all new carts, and with new carts came higher green fees, higher membership fees and an all new cart fee…for a still less than mediocre course that has not really changed or improved at all. At that time, most of the greens and most of the tee boxes were still either dead or dying.
Fast forward after about 6 months or so in mid June (2024) we visited the course again, hoping for improved conditions and were honestly shocked to find still, mostly dead greens and dying tee boxes with an 18 green area under repair for drainage issues…So…give it another 6 months or so to allow for growth and repair…
Today, I paid $50+ for 2 HotDeal tee times (separate bookings, booked at separate times, separate confirmation numbers, each for 1 player) so that I could have two carts, bc my 2 yr old son was riding with me…Get to check in and I’m charged $35 for an additional rider, regardless of the fact both of my HotDeals include a cart (not a seat on a cart). Called GolfNow to get clarity, and was told, yes separate HotDeals include separate carts…GN calls the club. Club representative lied and said I REQUESTED the additional cart after I was already provided 2 carts which didn’t even make sense…why would I pay for 3 carts???…Course rep meant 3 seats and they didn’t want to clarify they were charging me for a rider…
The course was not busy at all, I think me and my playing partner MIGHT have been 2 of 10 people playing this morning. Still, was a little shocked when I was charged for another rider after the prepaid tee times include a cart…definitely thought they could have been more understanding since I paid for two tee times and they were slow…
Anyways, moving on, start playing and we notice the greens have recently been fertilized, sprayed, something, but notice some were actually repaired from being re-sodded. It’s still very fresh and they have a long way to go before the repair isn’t obvious. Kudos for finally getting around to it…However, I guess they forgot courses had tee boxes, bc now that the greens are finally being repaired, most of the tee boxes are dead, dying or just down to dirt…
Ultimately, the price is steadily increasing for a course that is steadily decreasing. One thing gets fixed and another suffers. Old carts had GPS, and range screens, new carts don’t. Railroad ties around tee boxes are deteriorated or rotted away, tee boxes are steadily dying…One can’t help but wonder, with the price hikes across the board…where is the money going??? Bc it’s definitely not going back into the course. Sapelo Hammock GC used to be a hidden coastal gem and could compete with some of the nicer courses in the area but I’m afraid those days are long gone and the course’s days are numbered…There are plenty of other courses in the area that are comparatively priced to SH GC with much better conditions…
Hidden Gem
Sapelo Hammock is a challenging, yet well maintained golf course. The main surprise for me was how difficult the layout of Sapelo Hammock was. With tall Oak trees, plenty of water, and out of bounds areas surrounding the golf course playing Sapelo is a good test of your golf game.
I was pleasantly surprised at how incredible the greens were at Sapelo, especially in winter months. For a winter layout, the course was in incredible conditions, including good bunker conditions, with some work that needs to he done on the tee boxes.
The cart paths are still gravel, for me not an issue as a walker, however if you wish to ride in the carts they are a bit bumpy. A little warning if you wish to walk this course, there are stretches that take a while to walk from the second to the third whole, and same goes for walking from 8-9 and from 9-10. If you enjoy the exercise, the views are beautiful and it is completely worth the walk.
Thank you Sapelo for the great time, despite my poor play, the course was incredible!
One of the Best places to play!!
It’s tucked away, but well worth time to find it, a bit challenging but fairways are in great shape and open and fair, it has beautiful views as a bonus with large oaks and marsh views. Greens are in immaculate condition. It’s a must play course to me!
Excellent!
This course has quickly become a favorite. I usually play regularly on SSI but SH has proven to be worth the drive. Challenging, fun layout. Beautiful views and great staff. Lots of fun if you can play a decent draw.
Great Course!
Sapelo Hammock is a great golf course, in great condition, greens are perfect, I just love the challenge of the course. One of the best I’ve played.
Another
Another great round. If you haven’t played this course, you are missing out,
Worth the trip
Was staying on St. Simons and we were meeting friends from Savannah. This course was about half way. So glad we chose this one. Staff was great and the golf course was in very good condition. Will definitely play again when in the area.
Great course
It's like having a private golf course during the week.
Hidden Gem
We play this course each Thanksgiving week as we trvel through the area. Fantastic curse and great people
working there.
Fantastic course and greens!
Loved the course layout. It was beautiful and well maintained. Fast greens in great condition as well the best I've played yet. Cart path was a bit off but nothing of real concern especially with nice smooth taken care of carts. Definitely want to return and definitely recommend.
Great layout
Nice layout in the low country. Very friendly staff, range was included and that was nice.
