The greens were very poor. They had been stated recently. The course was OK but it didn’t have much character.
Ok…not great
An overall good course. Low rating because greens were punched and wasn’t told before paying. Would not have played knowing greens were in bad shape.
Wet and Punched — But No Problem
I was visiting family in Jacksonville, FL. This course is located 1 mile across the Florida/Georgia state line.
Let me start with the things I wasn’t the biggest fan of;
1. Range Balls cost Extra — it wasn’t a terrible expense, but being ranked as a top course in the state of GA I expected the range to be included. Again, not the end of the world, but wish it was included with the round.
2. Pro-shop — I saw the logo online—it looked awesome. I didn’t bring a hat, because I assumed with a logo like that, they would have had a plethora of really good hats to choose from that I was hoping to purchase. Unfortunately all the hat selections were disappointing, and I couldn’t find anything with their logo…in my opinion this is a clear misstep by the team there because their merch could be incredible if they got the right stuff and put their osprey logo on it.
3. No one told me the greens had been punched — this turned out not to be a big issue because the greens were in such good shape, but it would have been nice to have been given a heads up that they had aerated recently.
4. Course Routing — the overall design of the holes was nice and enjoyable. However, the greens and tee boxes were often far apart and if you ever plan to walk this course I would think twice. From 9 to 10 the distance was a good distance away and signage was minimal and caused me to question if I went the wrong way. Info about some of this after telling the pro shop I had never been there before would have been good.
Nothing was terrible, but had some of that been different this would have been a 5 star experience.
Now for the good;
1. The Course Conditions—one thing I want when I play golf is a course that is in good shape—and this course was—despite a ton of rain that left it cart path only. But the tee boxes, fairways, greens, fringes, rough, and couple of bunkers I found were all in really good shape.
2. The Scenery — there were 5 or so wholes on the marsh that were just beautiful. Coming in on both nines the last few on each side were truly serine.
3. Pace of Play — I went out as a single even though I booked a hot deal that would have paired me with 3 other players. I played in 2 hours and 30 minutes and had no issue from the one group I caught letting me play through.
4. Price — I got a Hot Deal and I am a golf pass member—meaning this round only cost me $48 dollars. I am from the Raleigh area of North Carolina and can say for the conditions — I would pay a lot more back home. Also, Jacksonville’s public golf is not very good. Massive amounts of play leave many of the public courses in rough shape—especially the greens. So for a little less than an hour drive, it was totally worth it to play a place that is in much better shape than most of what you will find in Jax or St. John’s.
5. Staff Friendliness — the staff was really kind and friendly even though they didn’t have much to offer. Everyone was really kind and generally seemed excited that I chose to come out and play there.
6. Complementary Water Bottles — they offered complementary water bottles in a cooler near the pro shop. Being that it is south GA in June, it was hot and humid and the water was a nice thing to have throughout the round.
7. Score Card — the score card was nice. Had a modern look but also was designed with combo tees designated for ease if you chose to mix in a couple of boxes. I played the blue/black combo which was a combo of tips and one up. It was I good yardage for me, especially considering the wet conditions that would have made the tips play extremely long.
I would absolutely tell anyone in North FL and South GA to play here as often as you can. I will try and make it back in the not too distant future when I am down here again—especially if I can snag a hot deal for under $50 bucks. Get out, have fun and go low and thanks for reading my review!
Greens perfect!
Awesome course and definitely worth it if you get a deal time! Course in awesome shape. Beautiful layout and greens fast and pure.
Excellent day
Course is in great shape. Both challenging with amazing views of the marshes. The wind can offer different challenges at different times. I recommend this course for most levels of players. As play increases the addition of a beverage cart would be recommended.
Firm and dry but still great
We're in a long drought. Everything everywhere is dry. It's getting warm. Tees, fairways, and rough are pretty baked out, but the greens are nice and roll well and the rest of the course is still good all things considered. There's still grass, it is just a bit brown. Not their fault. Can't beat the views. Truly one of my favorite courses within 100 miles.
Nice course
Greens were great - fast and true. Fairways and tees also nice for this time of year. Layout was fun, especially along the marsh. Fairways plenty wide to be more than fair. Plenty of traps but not overwhelming or misplaced.
Tees can be confusing -first because the colors (green, gray, and blue) look very much like each other. It’s nice to offer distance options by combining tees but the blue/gray is unnecessary only about 200 yds different either way. Looking forward to playing again.
First time
The clubhouse is impressive, and the staff, from the front desk to the starter and marshal, provided friendly and attentive service. The fairways and greens were well-maintained. I will recommend this club and plan to return.
Great value
requires every shot in your bag, especially when it's windy and playing blue/blacl
Great option for Northeast Florida/Georgia Course
I normally play around Amelia Island. Since its only 40 minutes, we ventured out to check this course out. Enjoyed the day. Great Weather, nice course, excellent staff. Will be back!
Starter and ranger needed
We played there twice, the first time we got paired with a single, we were a twosome. The single left us on the second hole and wanted to play by themselves in front of us behind a foursome making us wait on each hole. The second time we were a twosome and kept getting pushed by two singles behind and with a twosome in front of us. No starter the second time so it appears to be out of control for tee starts. The course is in nice condition and enjoyed the layout. However since the groups are all over the place and no ranger we left on the second outing on the fourteenth hole, had enough. Not sure if I would return.
