Reviews
Nice course, pleasant experience
Not sure why there are grumpy negative reviews posted recently. I was met by friendly, helpful staff. Helped me with loading clubs and asked to be of any other assistance. Played at 1:00 with twilight rates. Threesome finished in 3.75 hours. Wished it would have taken longer just to enjoy the immaculate fairways and perfect greens. Have played the Royal course several times and it is always pleasing. Kai course can be in a little rough shape at times which is why I pay a bit more to enjoy the better conditions of the Royal side. Can’t wait to come back.
Fantastic views
Pro’s:
Nice fairways. Tricky greens. Beautiful views. Very friendly, helpful staff.
Con’s:
Bunkers in rough shape.
Several blind shots.
Course is a little overpriced. I played it as a treat to myself.
Very Enjoyable
Nice course. Very wide open. Green are very good. Great for beginners and intermediate players. I see some have complained about the price but it's on par with other courses in Maui. I stayed at the Westin Maui Resort and found this course very convenient. Outstanding Pro Shop!!!
When two of us arrived 25 minutes before our tee time the clubs were 'yanked' out of our hands and put on a cart. We were 'encouraged' to tee off immediately even though we wanted to hit a few balls on the range. The initial experience felt rushed and rude, until I expressed my dissatisfaction to another staff member who did his best to calm the situation and direct us upstairs to check in and pay. I subsequently had a horrible round and this was topped up by the original attendant putting away the refresher towels when he noticed it was us finishing our round. Very poor and he also had a sarcastic chuckle just to rub it in!!! Extremely unhappy customer.
Never again
I guess we are spoilt as we play most of our golf in the Palm Springs area where there is a lot of choice and always good value, good golf to be had but my experience at the Royal was poor and I will not play it again.
That is quite an achievement for one of the prettiest courses I have ever played but to end up spending a lot of money and end up behind two 5 balls is just not good enough.
I spoke to the guys who service the cart who said the 5 balls play every week and that I should take it up in the pro shop. I did and they said that it was the Seniors skins game and that they are supposed to move on pretty quickly - they did not and frankly any course that allows a 5 ball is not a golf course and is not somewhere I would be willing to visit again.
Snow
It's not same course I played 3years ago it seems run down honey buckets on the course fairways greens not in good shapes.
Too many other courses to choose from!
I have played this course many times in the past. This is now the most run down course in the area. When you can play one of the Kapalua courses or make the drive to Wailea (for the gold or emerald courses for the same price and in WAY better condition), there is no reason to settle for Ka'anapali Kai. If you must stick around the Ka'anapali area, play the Ka'anapali Royal course, which is in far better shape than this course, and a better track with better scenery.
Expected more
I was just expecting more for the money as this was my other choice for my 2 days of playing golf in Maui. Earlier in the week, it was Wailea Emerald and there is no comparison between the two.
From the time you arrived here, it seemed like you were on your own to kinda figure it out. The only friendly member that we came in contact with was the pro shop staff. Other than that, range person and starter could have been a little more friendly. There a big contingent of locals teeing off on Royal and most of their focus was on them.
We were able to start a little earlier than our tee time , but our cart was really hesitant on the first hole, but finally kicked in and kept us going the rest of the round.
The course itself, is quite friendly with wide fairways. A few good views, greens protected by traps. The greens were inconsistent with speed of the putts.
Once we passed the twosome ahead of us, we played in 3 hours, so pace of play was fantastic.
After we finished the round, at 230.. not a sole around to assist with clubs or anything and at a resort course, that is expected.
Good course
Played this course twice while on a recent trip. The course itself is great and has some very challenging holes...#17 and #18 come to mind. Where the course falls down is in the amenities vs the price. The pro shop is nice but the driving range (off mats) is a joke and there's no place to buy food or water in the morning other than vending machines. There are coolers on the carts but no bottled water. The restaurant (Roy's) opens at 11am so doesn't help you for early rounds. Basically, if you come prepared with your own beverages and food then it's a great course to play. Just don't expect much more.
Top notch course.
Arryfication within the week but they offered a killer deal. $60 off and unlimited play for the day. Played 36 holes on this beautifully laid out course.
Go to Kapalua or Wailea instead
I would spend the extra $ to play Kapalua or drive down to Wailea. Service and course quality are much better at both. The greens were decent but conditioning on the rest of the course was average to poor in some places. The fairways were closer to first cut rough then a fairway. Amenities and service are more like a muni than upscale resort.
Great course with beautiful views
My girl friend and I played this course during our last day on vacation to Maui (Saturday). When we arrived the gentleman in the Pro Shop was extremely helpful with our club and locker rentals. Fortunately, we were able to go off about 45 minutes before our scheduled tee time and did not encounter any pace of play issues to the front or behind us for about 14 holes. The course overlooked the ocean and had amazing scenic views. I would highly recommend this course to anyone on vacation in Maui.
Easy course
If you want to keep your vacation low stress play this course. You can spray it left and right and still get away with par. The greens rolled very nice but you need to to be able to read the grain. Everything in Hawaii is expensive and golfing in a resort area is no exception. We played as a twosome in on a Tuesday in a late April and never saw anyone in front of us.
Hard on
Played with s pro and preacher pro shot one over preach and I prayed allot of fun Blues are tuff play from whited
Disapointment
We arrive at 30 minutes prior to our tee time. Upon arrival we were told that the greens had been airaided and sanded. We given the option of the Royal course for $50 each. I felted I trapped after planning this outing prior leaving for Hawaii.
The greens had more sand than the bunkers.
Excellent
Great friendly staff. Nice course, good pace of play
Great course
We played this course later in the day and it was very quiet and we had no pressure. It is a tough course with a lot of sand traps and water hazards. It has beautiful scenery from almost every hole of the ocean and the islands out in front of Kaanapali Beach.
Nice course, sand traps disgraceful
Nice layout, enjoyed the conditions, but sand traps were terrible.
Recommend adding sand and raking on a daily basis.
Heard the traps on the royal course are 100% better.
Overall enjoyed course
Mahalo for the great review and we hope to see you again soon!
