A Hawaiian Experience
Been to Hawaii twice. On my 2nd trip I was going to play Hawaii. It's always worth the money to play some place like Hawaii. Great experience. My son and I were teamed up with one other gentleman but he was pretty cool as he just wanted to come out and play non competitively. Playing later in the afternoon opened up more space and then of course less heat. Was a much fun. But always a challenge when you have never played the course. The scenery is beautiful but of course it's Hawaii.
Great atmosphere
We loved the course and more importantly the people.
Breezy conditions
An anomaly in weather created a very challenging 18 holes but we accepted the challenge and finished our game successfully. Deducting 1.50 strokes over part helped a little but overall we and a few others bravely finished. I loved it and will definitely make a future tee time regardless of weather conditions. Hey, this is the game of golf that few can really enjoy!
r.c.
p.s. anyone can play Tucson but Waikoloa is where it's at ....
Value rules at Waikaloa Kings course
Waikaloa Kings rates as my least favorite Tom Weiskopf design, but that's not really a knock on the course. There's just so many too-good Weiskopf designs to compete against. This one is just solid. It's conditioning can be a little rough in spots, although the day I played the greens rolled well enough and there were no major issues. As usual, Weiskopf built a couple of cool short par 4s. The par 4 fifth hole is a keeper with large lava rocks and a waste bunker protecting an elevated green that slopes away on all sides. While water is a major feature of the layout, the Kings never comes close to the ocean. That's a major deterrent when all its competition along the Kona Coast does. On the bright side, there's no premium ocean charge factored into the green fee. What you pay for is what you get: A perfectly enjoyable (but not spectacular) day playing golf.
Wide open and great views
Nice open fairways. Wind steady at 25mph, gusting to 35 mph made for challenging round of golf. Greens in great shape. Nice views of entire island throughout round!
Windy
The course was in good shape, but the wind was incredible with additional gusts over 30 mph. It takes a bit adjusting for the wind, especially putting.
Fun but windy
Wide fairways, some elevated greens, bunkers filled with pea gravel instead of sand because of the windy conditions. You won't lose many balls because there is little water and the rough is mostly forgiving. Nice ocean views from a few holes. You have to be ok playing in wind because most of the time it will be very windy I.e. Hard to keep your cap and scorecard through 18 holes.
Fun course but pass if it is a windy Don't rent clubs, bring your own
$50 charge for club rental is more than the green fee on Golf Now! Course is a great layout but fairways could really use some work. Sand traps are rock traps so they will have something in them when the wind blows. Everything is extra, bottled water, range balls, tees etc. Pay more to play a real golf course at Waikaloa Beach resort where everything is included. It will cost the same in the end.
Great Staff, Nice Course
Forgiving course. Nice views. Very polite and helpful staff. We will definitely golf here on our next visit to the Big Island!!
Great Value
Fun to play, nice mix of challenge and forgiveness. Bunkers are not sand rather a type of fine gravel. The grit on the greens can be an issue at times. Very walkable if you choose.
Quality course for the money
Golf in Hawaii, what could be better. Sunshine, a little wind. Course in great shape, good greens, friendly staff.
Play local golf without resort prices
If you are in Hawaii you expect to pay top dollar for everything. If your wallet is getting light or you just want a taste of regional golf without the resort prices..... You have found your course!
Great value!
Had a great time, got a little windy in the afternoon.
Yateman at Waikoloa
My husband and I had a wonderful round playing golf at your course. Everyone was friendly. We met another nice couple and planning on coming again.
Great muni course
Great muni with wide open fairways. Greens were in great shape but slow. Some distant ocean views and a few diglegs. Sand traps are ground rock. Would highly recommend this for the price. Also played Mauna Lani North, which is pricier but much narrower and more of a challenge for 10 handicaps or less
Great Value
Overall a nice public course. Great value with GolfNow discounts compared to paying 2 to 4 times more for other courses in the area. Beautiful island views throughout including the many feathered wildlife.
Offers some challenges with pin placements and large greenside bunkers. Greens were much slower than they looked. No real sand in most of the bunkers considering it's on an island surrounded by beaches.
Great Course
I play on the Big Island frequently but never had played this course until now. It is a nice course with some ocean views in the very distance, greens were running about 8-9. Most bunkers have a pea gravel in them. Not bad, just need to adjust to how the ball in the gravel responds. Sometimes just picking it out instead of hitting through seemed to work since I found myself in more than usual.:-) I will definitely go back.
A few notes.
The course people were great. The price was OK given it's in Hawaii and the cost reduction with Golfnow made it very reasonable. The only hole descriptions are on the cards with small print (for those who use reading glasses :). The time between groups greatly helped the pace of play (many, beginner types, 20 yard hitters while I played) but finished in just over 3hrs/45min. Very friendly fellow players on the course wen I played.
Had a very good time with borrowed clubs !!
Super time
Excellent Course --good friendly staff--had a super time!
Very Enjoyable
We spent the week on this island and played four courses and this is the one we chose to replay. The course is very playable with wide fairways, nice layout, and some ocean views. Fairways and greens in decent shape for a public course. The "sand" bunkers were not really sand but what I would deem "white chat". Interesting to hit out of but more disturbing was finding the chat on the green from previous golfers and spending the time to clean the green for your putt. The staff was easy going and very helpful. Due to low tee time bookings, we were able to get off early both days we played and was able to set our own pace. Upon returning to the clubhouse, one of the few places anywhere where we were encouraged to use the cart to take our clubs to the car. That was nice touch instead of a guy waiting with a rag in one hand and his other hand out for a tip. This is a nice course for novice and intermediate golfers.
