About Fort Golf Course Resort

The Fort Golf Course Resort was created in 1996 from Fort Benjamin Harrison, once a key U.S. Army post. The redeveloped military base has become a popular 1,700-acre state park with hills galore for hikers, bikers and golfers. Owned and operated by the State of Indiana, the 7,148-yard Pete Dye design features tree-lined fairways and Dye’s penchant for tough and interesting holes. The Fort Harrison Inn, a limestone structure built in the 1940s, offers 27 rooms and suites and the Garrison Restaurant. The Harrison House (seven more rooms and suites) and four Officer Homes are also available for overnight stays.

New 2nd Favorite

This course is absolutely amazing! Pete Dye is an evil golf course designing genius. This has now become my new 2nd favorite course in the Indianapolis area. The hills and elevation changes are great. The course was in tip top shape. I have to say that there was nothing that I did not like about this course. If you haven't played this course yet I highly recommend that you get on it ASAP. You will not be disappointed.

Great layout

The course is in very good condition except for the greens. The Fort always seems to struggle with poiana grass in the greens. Other than, it is in great shape.

Beautiful course

This is destined to be one of my favorite Indiana courses. Beautiful course, well laid out and well maintained. The only problem was the groups ahead of us that were so so slow. This course took me over five hours and the rangers did nothing about it. Great course, fun time...

Good Layout but conditions were not great. In their defense it is early spring and the greens had not recovered from aeration yet.

Pretty solid course but nothing that really wants to make me go back and play again. Could never really figure out speed of the greens. Some were slow, some really quick.

Course Design is Awesome

This Pete Dye course is a great design, very challenging with a lot of uphill shots. The greens were in terrible condition as they seemed to have been aerated recently. There were small mounds of dirt all over the greens that made putting very difficult.

Early Season Round

Cart path only this day and still pretty soggy from the rains early in the week but still good conditions to score well. Rangers were around the course at all times to make sure the course was not driven on to maintain it for upcoming rounds throughout the year. One of the best courses in central Indiana.

Great course!

For the time of year, the course was in great shape. A little annoyed about cart path only because it hadn't rained at all and it was sunny out. But for this time of year, there is no better course in the City.

Early in the year so the course is just now starting to grow in.

We have had a bad spring in Indiana, so the grass is just now starting to grow but they were out working on the course and the greens are already smooth and fast. The course is hilly for central Indiana and the layout challenging. The Fort has several sets of tees so it will be fun for any players skill level.

Most Scenic Course in Indianapolis

In my opinion, this is the best course in Indianapolis and easily one of the best in the state of Indiana. It is a true challenge with some nice elevation changes. Everything was in fabulous condition even with the fact we were in a drought and desperately needed rain. The fairways are mowed tight! The greens are fast and true. Bring your A-game for this challenge and you will enjoy.

Challenging, solid layout

The Fort was a challenging course, with tricky greens. Played with the track aerated (unofrtunately) but the greens rolled fairly true tnd were fast. From the blue tees, the back 9 gets long towards the end and you need to keep the ball straight on certain holes. Great test, but played a little slow on a crowded Monday.....

The Fort

The Fort is considered one of the high end courses in Indianapolis and I can understand why. The most memorable part of the fort for me was the setting. I loved the holes that were cut into the woods and then pop out into open areas and then back into the woods again. The course was in good shape when I played with a few areas that discouraged me. I did hit into a water filled bunker and a few areas of the fairways and greens that were gone but that’s life; however, that didn’t distract me from enjoying my round. The pace was slow and we did have to wait around a lot but I blame that on the slow pokes in front of us. The course layout is great with elevation changes and some picturesque views from the tee boxes. I recommend this course to every golfer.

Good track but the timing was wrong

I've played this course a number of times and like it, but yesterday it was cart paths only, and the greens had just been punched... terrible to put on, anything over 4 feet was pure luck .

Setting, Layout and Saff override conditioning issues

I play the Fort two or three times a year. My most recent round was on a beautiful fall day that showcases this course in all it's glory. Elevation changes, great views and plenty of trees make this course a real treat for the eyes. As always the staff was very welcoming and friendly. An on course marshal keeps people moving and does it with a smile.

On the day we played it was cart path only due to recent wet weather. This is a fairly frequent occurrence since the course does not drain all that well. Given the layout, this really slows down a round of golf, but since it does this to everybody, the good work of the marshals keeps waiting to a minimum. There are a lot of long walks to you ball and a lot of climbing up and down hills - take a handful of clubs with you since the yardage will rarely be the same at your ball and your cart. Unless you are part mountain goat, walking is all but impossible (i don't think I've ever seen anyone do it - it may not even be allowed.)

The layout is challenging without being too narrow. Elevation changes, doglegs, well placed bunkers and difficult green complexes will take their toll on your score - but your lost ball count should stay pretty low.

Course conditioning could be better even with the frequent use of cart path only rules. Many of the tee boxes had no grass on them and there were a number of bare patches on the fairways. The greens had been recently aerated with a large core method that made putting an adventure. Many areas, especially near the greens, were very soggy. Still in most areas the fairways were in great shape and the greens looked like they will be too once the aeration holes heal. The bunkers (and there are plenty of them) are well maintained. Like the rest of the course, they don't drain that well and there was still some standing water on a Sunday afternoon after a moderate Friday night rain. The sand was quite firm due to being wet and not from a lack of sand.

The rough was longish and since many approach shots are partially blind, that can lead to a lot of looking after a not too errant shot. A little closer cropping would definitely speed up play.

All in all, it is a beautiful course with a unique and challenging layout and a staff that makes you feel at home. The few course conditioning issues are very easy to overlook and I would put this course on your must play list when in the Indianapolis area.

Please note: The slider buttons used to rate the course didn't slide. Therefore, the ratings overstate the challenge and the course conditioning problems. As for value, I would put it in the good category as opposed to great. The playing time and staff rating are right on.
