Hole #9 from behind the green Photo submitted by ShragMagtite on 09/19/2017
This course has great views
The course has great views and challenging dog legs. Greens are so-so. Great deal with Golfnow.
Good Course, Very Friendly Staff
I booked on Golf Now for $15.00 @ 1230 on a Sunday afternoon. The staff was very friendly when we arrived and the course overall is in pretty good shape. Green were a little bumpy but this is March and the Cost you can't beat when booking on line. They are making some improvements to both the club house and the course itself. Be interesting to play when fairways come in green and weather is a little better.
Needs serious help
I have played this course a fee times and really liked layout. But, this course is just in terrible condition right now. Tee boxes and fairways either not cut or very poorly maintained. Worse are the greens. 3 were closed and had temporary greens. In all honesty, all 18 greens shoukd have been shut down until they can be recovered. There was not 1 hole out of 18 where you could putt. Every green was burnt. diseased and juSt in about in the worse condition. Shame as the course is a pretty course with nice lay out. Staff is great.
greens need immediate attention!!
Greens are very burnt from lack of oxygen and air flow. Fairway and tee boxes are fair to moderate, but most are placed on uneven surfaces. Greens rolled fairly well for being very burnt. Greens have been reduced in size over the last two years. Some by as must as 20 feet around the outside edge. Hard to hit small postage stamp greens on par 3's like number 16 from 215 yards if they keep shrinking. Overall pace of play was great, but course conditions will keep me from returning this year. Maybe next season will be better.
Great Course
Very well maintained. Super friendly staff and a beautiful course.
I like it.
The Pro is good. The course is a challenge but great fun. Much better than other public courses in this area.
Very quiet
This course would be a really good course if the greens were a little better and the tee boxes were cut down a lot. Played for really cheap and the staff was really nice. The really need to change the hole positions really bad because the grass on the greens are really growing around and in the cup. This course with a little cosmetic work can be an extremely nice course because the front nine has a great lake view and and the back is very tight with a lot of tree line and tons of wild life. I was able to get about 15 yards from deer and fox and them not move.
Strategy golf
Challenging but fun course. The greens were very nice, a little slow but well manicured. The back was very beautiful but leave the driver in the bag because it is all about how you set up for the next shot. I will defiantly be back!
Early
Early in the season. Course wasn't in very good shape yet. Will be later in the season before I play there again.
Best Bang for your Buck
Wonderful friendly staff, clean facilities, no hot dogs for the turn, greens were amazing, bunkers could use more sand. Two of us played 18 holes in 3 hours.
Late Fall Round
The course was in off season condition. The bermuda fairways were browning up as expected. The weather was a little unseasonably cool, but we had a great time. For all the trees in this wooded area they had kept the course quite clear of leaves. The greens remained in good shape. A good time was had by all.
Tough course.
Not a course for beginners of the game unless you have 50 golf balls in your bag.
Breathtaking Scenery
This course was in excellent shape. Each hole was unique and had it's own challenge. There was no one on the course within sight. We found the staff and the course to be outstanding in every way.
Nice views
First time playing this course. We got a great price from Golf Now. This is a beautiful course with several views of the lake . This is a tight course with several doglegs . Staff was very friendly and will definitely play again.
Tight course
Great course for the money. Narrow fairways a good chalange to hit the ball straight . Different from other courses I've played.
Extra Balls
Fairways are narrow, the course is long, and you must have patience. You can't pull a driver out on every hole and if you hit with a draw/hook you are in serious trouble. The course is beautiful and always in good shape but you have to be mentally prepared before you play this course or it will eat you alive. Practice areas are poor.
Don't crush the ball
Always a pleasure playing Barren. The course was in worse shape then I've ever seen it and the greens were a bit chewed up, but I played after a tournament and the high school had a match there a few days back as well. The course is tight and the longest drive isn't always the best. If you play smart, pick your shots, and go for it at the right times then you might find that birdies will come a little easier. A few par 5s are easy birdie opportunities, but a few will leave you pleased just to walk away with a bogey. Lots of doglegs and if you're feeling strog, then you can cheat a few by cutting corners. Great course.
Challenging course
Lost a lot of balls, but the course itself is awesome. Super friendly staff. Greens and fairways are in good condition
Great value.....
.....for the money. Played it earlier in the year and it wasn't in very good shape due to the winter kill of bermuda. Fairways have filled out nicely. Staff is great and very accomodating. Early morning or late afternoon tee times usually yield an abundance of wildlife.
Barren river state park
Course was in great shape except for some muddy bunkers. Staff and the volunteer were very friendly.
