Signature Hole #17 Photo submitted by NateRamsey on 04/13/2013
Poor Conditions and drainage issues
This course has lots of blight issues, particularly on the back 9. Most of the holes have Major drainage issues as you get closer to the hole. The Beverage Cart guy came around once when we were on hole 2 to never be seen again. Definitely not worth the $150 round. They also don’t have enough carts on their busy days. Lots of potential with this course but they need a complete overhaul on their maintenance program and operation.
Greens in poor condition
I love this course, great layout and very challenging for the average golfer. I played this course twice last year , there are scenic vistas . Fairways are lush and in great shape, green side bunkers were in great shape and nice sand. Greens were another story, very bumpy and spotty . Rolled very slow, granted they held approach shots very well. I would guess because it is a mountain course the greens are kept long so they don’t lose them .
DO BETTER, WISP MANAGEMENT! WHAT A SHAME!
I have played this course every year for the past three. Every year I come the conditions get worse but the price magically goes up.
Wisp resort management needs to get their act together and ensure both this and Lodestone are maintained so that the good people who work there don’t end up losing their jobs.
It is so sad to watch these course being let go. If you can’t do it, give it to someone who can.
Good:
Lay out is fun, challenging but a good time.
People that work here are friendly and nice as the rest of this town.
Bad:
Let me start with the worst issue in both these courses. The greens have a very common fungus found on bentgrass greens. There are thousands of 1-2” round dead spots on every green. Which makes putting impossible. This just needs fungicide. COMEON!!
Bunkers have no sand, not a grain of sand.
Rough is longer than the US open. 5-6” just off the fairways.
Geese and their poop everywhere that it is borderline unhealthy.
No beverage cart nor water stations anywhere even though its 90+ outside
Look, golf is a game where most folks want to get out and relax and have fun. Have a beer, have a cigar, and play in conditions that are at least okay. If the greens roll fine even with a few humps here snd there most people are happy. But when your greens are like a surface of the moon with mini craters everywhere it is reprehensible that you’ll charge people exorbitant prices and expect them to come back. DO BETTER COS IT IS A SHAME AND A SHAM!
Too many geese
Love the course and layout. Goose poop everywhere, especially on many of the greens. Everywhere we walked (except for a few holes) we had goose poop on our shoes. Complained to the pro shop and was told there was nothing they could do about it. Maryland forbid killing the buggers. There must be a way to rid the course of them. As much as I love the course, I doubt I'll be back any time soon, not until they have a way to control the geese.
These Greens have a fungus, do not play
The course seems to have been let go of its maintenance by Wisp. The greens have a common fungus seen on bent grass and thus has dead brown spots that also make the surface very rough and impossible to putt on.
The layout is fun and the views and nature can be so much more if the golf was enjoyable. The rough is fine but the fairways have so many water logged areas that have not been maintained. Its just sad to see such an iconic course been let go by its management.
Its not like there are no people playing this course. The course was full on a Wednesday BUT there was not a single beverage cart in site nor a single beverage station. So if you are going to brave the impossible greens take water and beverages with you. You never come back to the pro shop until 18.
Good luck with your putting.
Fantasy Valley in rough shape
Last tead I paid $65 for a weekday round. This year $84 . Why? Greens are very patchy and bumpy with many brown spots. Bunkers have very little sand but lots of rocks and weeds. And there is no practice range.
Disappointed
Played this course in the past. Loved it. Has really gone down hill.
No pro shop, wasn’t marked (a yurt)
Fairways and greens in good shape.
Geese everywhere- a problem
All of the amenities they had in the past are gone.
We played twilight at a reduced rate but would have been disgusted if we played full price.
Amazing course layout
Fantastic golf course. The greens have some kind of blight, which unfortunately mars a wonderful layout.
DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE MONEY
Every year myself and 15 or so buddies spend a weekend out in deep creek, with Lodestone being the centerpiece of the weekend. We will usually play 36 holes at the course, with maybe 9 holes at fantasy valley.
Lodestone is now unplayable. They have a fungus on the greens and you cannot roll a golf ball on them. I have never seen worse greens in 40 years of golf, bar none, not an exaggeration. Nobody told us this was the case when we went out.
Add to that the fact that they have increased the greens fees from about $100, which was already pretty steep, to $160 and the round left me literally sick to my stomach. We canceled our Sunday round because there was zero chance I was giving them another dollar. Beer is $40 for a 6 pack, so after buying some beers for friends I was out $300 yesterday for a course that is unplayable.
All in, my friends and I spend pretty close to $10,000 for the weekend of fun every year, but we’ll be doing it somewhere else from now on
Go play thousand acres, it is a gem at half the price.
A bit expensive, playable but bunkers are in terrible shape.
The course is playable if not a bit expensive. The looks of the course are brought down significantly because it looks like they have gtotally given up on maintaining the bunkers. I would recommend this course but only at a lower price point and if they fix the bunkers.
Great design, poor maintenance
I wouldn’t pay that much to play this course again. The course had potential but was not maintained well. Some kind of fungus on the greens made putting a joke. WAAAAAYYYYYY over priced for the course conditions. I wouldn’t play it again unless they hired more people to take care of this course. Hale Irwin would be disappointed .
Beautiful
Awesome course. Beautiful.
Bunkers are washed out and have so much overgrowth in them. But who plays to hit out of fancy bunkers?
Terrible
This golf course is garbage! And they charges a ridiculous amount to play. I was blown away. Some type of fungal disease on the greens. Poor maintenance. It was garbage. I’ll never play there again
Lodestone declines
Most greens were patchy. Last year $120 this year $149 ??? Seriously overpriced. Course was in better condition last year.
Summer morning
This is not the first time I have played this coarse. I love this lay out and the view the coarse has to offer! However I played links of Gettysburg the week prior and it was cheaper and in much better condition. Fairways had several burned out patches and the greens had small brown quarter sized spots. I would best describe it as a cheetah look! It was ok as we looked forward to playing here again!
Course is in great shale
Greens were pure, customer service was great, and layout is challenging (tips 7500+).
Even if you’re a single digit handicapped bring a extra sleeve - but this course is awesome amd worth it.
Definitely Will Be Back
We thoroughly enjoyed our round at Lodestone and will definitely be back! The course is challenging but fair, and offers plenty of opportunities to score well if you hit the right spots. One of the coolest, well-thought out layouts our group has ever played.
The Good:
-Staff is extremely flexible, friendly, and helpful
-Course layout is spectacular and has lots of character
-Views of the lake on a few holes are awesome
-Greens are huge, undulating, and accessible, which makes the course fair given all the fairway undulation/slopes
-Bunkers had plenty of sand (this might be a recent improvement - as some other recent reviews said the course lacked sand in bunkers - we didn't see a single bunker without sand)
-The small diagrams on the scorecard were good enough to help overcome the many blind shots due to the course slopes; now that we've played it once we'll know exactly where to hit.
-Fairways are plush, enabling players to spin the ball into greens.
Potential Areas to Improve:
-Some tall grass is growing on the edges of many bunkers - this might be on purpose, but if so I'd suggest telling players this to avoid bad reviews. It didn't affect our ability to play out of them.
-Some greens have small (quarter-sized) brown spots, which might be signs of disease? They're still completely playable and roll true.
Never Again
This was our first time playing this course and will definitely be the last.
First, the good:
-We were a twosome, and the pro shop manager asked the two foursomes in front of us to start the day if we could go first, and they graciously obliged.
-There are a few holes on the back 9 that have great design, and were marginally kept.
-That's pretty much it.
The bad:
-The first 5 holes were borderline unplayable - tall grass within 4-5 feet of each fairway, all extremely narrow.
-After 6, it opens up some, and the back 9 is more playable, but still in rough shape. Majority of the course was just awful.
-You could tell this course may have been decent 10-15 years ago, but it's been completely let go.
-There wasn't a trace of sand in the bunkers, nothing but rocks.
-Most greens had weeds and bare spots.
I wouldn't have been upset had I paid $20 to play, but $80+? What a ripoff. We have no interest playing this course again.
Great except the sand traps
Enjoyed the course a lot. Did not have to wait at all as a two-some. The sand traps are in poor shape, but the rest of the course is in great condition.
Overpriced
Difficult should not equate to pricey yet this course seems to think that if they charge enough for everything that you’ll think you’re somehow playing a great course.
I’m a part of the group that this gentleman refers to in his review.
I couldn’t agree more. How can the course up the greens fees when the greens are in such bad shape? Such a shame.
This used to be my favorite course to play. We won’t be back until they fix the greens.
